Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on the Fossil Turtles Accredited to the Judith River Formation Lack of space at that time precluded the full presentation of the data on which the above statements were based. Inasmuch as this mild remonstrance does not appear to have attracted attention, and since the turtles are still being used to prove close relation Ship between the Judith River and Lance (ceratops beds) for mations, it seems opportune to set forth the facts as they are. In a paper3 just published Dr. 0. P. Hay writes as follows: My study of the fossil turtles indicates that the species of these animals rarely pass from one epoch to another. If they have ever done so they passed from the Judith River into the Lance Creek epoch. There are five or six species of Judith River turtles which are rep resented in the Lance Creek and Hell Creek beds by turtles of iden tical or very closely related species. Book Non marine Turtles from the Upper Cretaceous Campanian Judith River Formation of North Central Montana

Download or read book Non marine Turtles from the Upper Cretaceous Campanian Judith River Formation of North Central Montana written by Benjamin Isaac Faulkner and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Campanian Judith River Formation of north-central Montana preserves a multitude of vertebrate microfossil bonebeds that yield abundant turtle fossils, yet little has been published describing the formation's turtle assemblage. Here we report new data from the type area that reveals the taxonomy and relative abundance of these turtles. To date we have documented 1542 carapace and plastron fragments from surface collected samples of 19 microfossil bonebed sites (all yielding at least 10 specimens), 1322 of which are identifiable based on diagnostic shell morphology. With regard to representation in the identifiable sample, trionychids are most common (69%), followed by baenids (19%), Basilemys (9%), and chelydrids (3%). Though multiple genera of trionychids and baenids are likely represented, lower taxonomic classification was impossible due to the fragmentary nature of the sample and the paucity of associated diagnostic skeletal material (e.g., skulls, vertebrae, claws) for comparison. Within the four highest yields sites (n>100 fragments/sites), the aforementioned relative abundance pattern largely holds. Site-to-site variation in the abundance of the principally terrestrial Basilemys suggests heterogeneity in the aquatic environments where the shells were deposited. The dominance of trionychids and baenids and the rarity of Adocus is comparable to a similar-sized collection (1804 fragments) fro the Dinosaur Park Formation in Alberta. The lack of Adocus in the Judith River Formation type area is unexpected because Adocus is more abundant in samples from geographically closer regions, the Manyberries/Onefour area i Alberta and the Kennedy Coulee area in Montana. This suggests paleoecological similarity between the Judith River Formation and the more northern Dinosaur Park Formation.
