Book Remaking Retirement

Download or read book Remaking Retirement written by Olivia Mitchell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, people nearing and entering retirement are holding ever-greater levels of debt than in the past. This is not a benign situation, as many pre-retirees and retirees are stressed about their indebtedness. Moreover, this growth in debt among the older population may render retirees vulnerable to financial shocks, medical care bills, and changes in interest rates. Contributors to this volume explore key aspects of the rise in debt across older cohorts, drill down into the types of debt and reasons for debt incurred by the older population, and review policies to remedy some of the financial problems facing older persons, in the US and elsewhere. The authors explore which groups are most affected by debt and identify the factors producing this important increase in leverage at older ages. It is clear that the economic and market environment is influential when it comes to saving and debt. Access to easy borrowing, low interest rates, and the rising cost of education have had significant impacts on how much people borrow, and how much debt they carry at older ages. In this environment, the capacity to manage debt is ever more important as older workers lack the opportunity to recover from mistakes.

Book Forecasting Retirement Needs and Retirement Wealth

Download or read book Forecasting Retirement Needs and Retirement Wealth written by Olivia S. Mitchell and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many new retirement-related opportunities and risks confront individuals and employers in the 21st century. Opportunities include the exciting prospects of living longer, living healthier, and living a more productive life than ever before. But the risks are also huge, including the challenge of setting an income goal and then saving enough for retirement, investing wisely in a time of financial turmoil, and planning carefully for a long period of time in retirement. What are retirement needs and how much will we need to save for old age? What is retirement becoming, especially in an era of downsizing and early retirement? What assets should we hold prior to and throughout the retirement period? How should we invest our pension assets, and how can education influence 401(k) plan saving? How important are employer-provided pensions and social security in protecting retirees against old-age poverty? And what special problems do minorities and women face? Forecasting Retirement Needs and Retirement Wealth draws on the latest information available on health, wealth, and retirement in America, to offer new perspectives on ways to support the expanding population of older citizens. As these novel paths to retirement emerge, paths that involve "bridge" jobs and gradual transitions through various states of employment, they force new thinking on the concept and process of retirement. Contributors explore the difficult problem of determining what resources people need during retirement and offer ways to think about how much to save for old age. Also in the Pension Research Council Publications series-- Prospects for Social Security Reform Edited by Olivia S. Book Revitalizing Retirement

Download or read book Revitalizing Retirement written by Nancy K. Schlossberg and published by American Psychological Association (APA). This book was released on 2009 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In preparation for retirement, we are often urged to build up our financial portfolio or perhaps downsize our home or move closer to family. Often neglected in this process, however, are the psychological ramifications that come with the transition into retirement. It is important for retirees to make a plan for their retirement financially, but also to take stock of their psychological portfolio at the same time. This means taking an honest look at how your sense of identity will change with retirement, how your relationships and support systems may change, and how your sense of purpose will be affected.""Revitalizing Retirement"" gives unique guidance on how to create a happy, fulfilling retirement. Nancy K. Schlossberg, a counseling psychologist and author of ""Retire Smart"", ""Retire Happy"", describes the secret to a happy retirement. She encourages readers to reshape their identity, relationships, and purpose. She discusses several coping skills that deal with accepting change and help retirees continue to feel that they are vital members of their community and that they matter. Each chapter contains stories from actual retirees that demonstrate the numerous ways of pursuing an enjoyable retirement. There are short quizzes and discussion questions at the end of each chapter so that readers can reflect on what they have read and see exactly how it relates to their own lives. This book is a must-read for anyone considering retirement in the near future as well as current retirees who may be struggling to find happiness in their daily lives.

Book Redefining Retirement

Download or read book Redefining Retirement written by Brigitte Madrian and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-07-12 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the leading edge of the 'Baby Boom' generation attains age 60, members of this unusually large cohort born 1946-66 are poised to redefine retirement - just as they have restructured educational, housing, and labor markets in prior days. Looking ahead, their numbers and energy are sure to have a major impact on national pensions, healthcare, and social safety nets. Contributors to this volume note that 'Boomers' will be better off than their predecessors in many ways, having benefited from the long run-up in housing prices, dramatic improvements in healthcare, and the expanding economy. On the other hand, the generation's sheer size will surely squeeze resources and require new approaches to retirement risk management. This volume paints a complex and fascinating picture as Boomers move into retirement. On average they are in better financial and physical health than prior cohorts, and they can be anticipated to fare better than current retirees in absolute terms. Yet the distribution of retiree income and wealth will be less equal than in earlier years, and in relative terms, many Boomers will be less well off than their forebears. Contributors to the volume use many invaluable models and datasets, including the incomparable Health and Retirement Study (HRS) which affords unique insights into the status of mature adults surveyed at the same age and hence same point in their life cycles, but at three different time periods. Analysts offer new evidence about prospects for health and income during retirement, as well as pensions and housing equity, health, portfolio allocation, and financial literacy. This book offers readers an invaluable and first book-length study of Boomers as they march into retirement. As such, it represents an invaluable addition to the Pension Research Council/Oxford University Press series. It will be especially useful for scholars and policymakers seeking to understand retirement preparedness, to actuaries and tax specialists concerned with retirement system regulation, and to plan sponsors interested in the determinants of work and retirement at older ages.

Download or read book Breaking the Watch written by Joel S. Savishinsky and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of retirement becomes increasingly compelling as the U.S. population ages. It's easy to find books about how to plan financially for those years after careers end, but Breaking the Watch focuses on the many ways of creating a life, not just making a living, as a retired person. This book follows women and men from a rural American community as they approach and experience the first years of retirement. Joel Savishinsky focuses on the efforts people make to find meaning in a stage of life American culture often views in a confused or disdainful way.In conversations and stories, 13 men and 13 women demonstrate a deep commitment to defining their own retirement. They bring to their mature years a diversity of backgrounds, interests, and responsibilities. They include former teachers, librarians, doctors, farmers, lawyers, bankers, mail carriers, and secretaries. Some are married, others divorced or single; many have children and grandchildren, but some have neither. Their finances run the gamut from the modest to the munificent, while their health ranges from robust to disabled. From an examination of the "rites of passage" that marked their exit from full-time work, Breaking the Watch moves on to consider how to plan appropriately for retirement; renegotiate ties to friends, family, and community; and create a sense of passion—be it for t'ai chi, travel, painting, or politics—that will drive a new sense of purpose. These intimate glimpses into real lives allow a rare understanding of the retirement process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of baby boomers are just beginning to retire, and in doing so many are likely to run into adjustment problems, such as loss of identity, deterioration of marriage and social life, and feelings of disconnectedness to the world. Studies have found that as many as 40% of retirees have difficulty adjusting, and even those who claim to enjoy retirement may experience some uneasiness as they adapt to a life lacking in structure and direction. This book investigates the struggles faced by retirees in building a new life outside of the workforce. It provides an honest assessment of retirement, based on the not-always-acknowledged fact that it is a difficult transition with pitfalls and obstacles to be overcome. But along with uncovering problems, the authors also propose solutions to enable both current and future retirees to be better prepared, allowing them to avoid being blind-sided by unexpected situations. By reading about the experiences of their peers, current and future retirees will come to understand that others share their difficulties adjusting, and that tactics are available to improve their comfort level in retirement as well as their overall well-being. Retirees and those planning for retirement will find in these pages what they need to make retirement successful and enjoyable.

Do you regard it as a reward for work well done or the inevitable end of a life well lived? What do you envision doing once you are no longer working? If any of these questions seem daunting, this is the book for you. The author, an experienced and skilled human resources administrator, frequently encountered individuals who had not done any retirement planning beyond selecting a date and estimating a budget. Book Pension Funds and Sustainable Investment

Download or read book Pension Funds and Sustainable Investment written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Since its green shoots first emerged around 50 years ago, acceptance of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations in institutional investing-especially at pension funds-has evolved with distinct shifts in investor preferences. This Pension Research Council volume traces these shifts and their implications, leading up to the present day. The book notes that investors have diverse reasons for devoting attention to ESG criteria when deciding where to invest their money. Some had religious motives, such as Quakers who focused on values; this approach can offer some risk mitigation. Nevertheless, studies that look at whether divestment actually changes companies' behaviors show that this rarely occurs. Accordingly, this book offers a variety of distinct viewpoints from a variety of countries, on whether, how, and when ESG criteria should, and should not, drive pension fund investments. The authors also find that policymakers should consider fund consolidation in private sector retirement systems, along with whether service-provider incentives could be better be aligned with sustainability incentives. For instance, boosting transparency in these markets would help generate better-informed policies, while providing beneficiaries with information relevant to their savings choices.
