This book was released on 2005-07-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reluctant Partners? combines comprehensive empirical insights into NGOs' work in agriculture with wider considerations of their relations with the State and their contribution to democratic pluralism. This overview volume for the Non-Governmental Organizations series contextualizes and synthesizes the case study material in the three regional volumes on Africa, Asia and Latin America, where over sixty specially commissioned case studies of farmer-participatory approaches to agricultural innovation are presented. Specific questions are raised. How good/bad are NGOs at promoting technological innovation and addressing contraints to change in peasant culture? How effective are NGOs at strengthening local organizations? How do/will donor pressures influence NGOs and their links to the State?

Book The European Union s Strategic Partnerships

Download or read book The European Union s Strategic Partnerships written by Laura C. Ferreira-Pereira and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-04 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical and updated analysis of the nature of the EU’s strategic partnership diplomacy, and of the partnerships themselves, in times of power shift and contestation. It links with key aspects of the EU’s Global Strategy; it brings together a strong list of experts who work within a clear framework for analysis; and it deals not only with the substance of the policy but also with the ways in which the policy as a whole has emerged, is conducted and might develop in the future. In offering an inclusive set of case studies and diverse perspectives, this book aims to advance both conceptualization and analysis of the implementation of the established EU partnerships. The book highlights the notion of strategic partnership as a foreign policy instrument to support EU external action in a context of multilevel change and crisis; its policy dimension as a gradually separated, but not separable policy within the Union’s external action; the institutional component given the emergence of SPs as a sort of self-preserving institutional platform allowing for denser and deeper cooperation in various policy areas; and the implications for the EU’s self-conception as an international actor with a global identity and role.

Book Partnership Rights Free Movement and EU Law

Download or read book Partnership Rights Free Movement and EU Law written by Helen Toner and published by Hart Publishing. This book was released on 2004-12-31 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the case for modernising partnership rights in EC family reunification law. Existing Community law traditionally guarantees immigration rights only to spouses and yet there is a growing diversity of national laws on same-sex marriage, registered partnerships and recognition of cohabitation. The Community institutions which have recently framed new legislation seem to view this as a question that can be settled by political agreement with little or no outside constraint. The book challenges this assumption. The book outlines recent developments in national legal systems and traces the development of the recent Community legislation. Then, drawing on basic ECHR principles, the place of the ECHR in Community law, and on basic Community law principles of free movement and discrimination the book argues that the right of a migrant EU Citizen to family reunification for a cohabiting partner is presumptively protected and therefore justification for refusing to admit such partners must be provided. It also considers the possible justifications for marriage-partners only immigration policies and concludes that although possible, such justifications are far from certain to succeed. The discussion also tackles the question of whether judicial activism is appropriate or whether there should be judicial deference to the legislative process recently completed. The book concludes with a wider discussion of the proper response of Community law to the increasing diversity of Member States family laws and policies beyond the field of immigration rights. The book will be of value not only to immigration lawyers, but also to those interested in partnership rights generally, as well as to a wider audience of EU lawyers, primarily academics but also graduate students and practitioners.

Book Troubled Partnership

Download or read book Troubled Partnership written by Mark A. Lorell and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, Japanese fighters, such as the famed Zero, were among the most respected and feared combat aircraft in the world. But for decades following the defeat of Japan in 1945, a variety of political and economic factors prevented Japan from developing its own modern national fighter. This changed in the 1980s. Japan began independently developing its first world-class fighter since World War II. After several years of contentious negotiations, the Japanese agreed to work with the United States to cooperatively develop a minimally modified F-16, the FS-X. The new fighter, however, has evolved into a world-class aircraft developed largely by Japanese industry primarily due to errors committed by the U.S. side. By the fall of 1995, fifty years after the end of World War II, the Zero for the 1990s will have made its first flight, catapulting Japan into the elite ranks of nations capable of developing the most advanced weapon systems. In "Troubled Partnership, "Mark Lorell traces the evolution of the FS-X, disclosing the conflicting economic and security objectives advanced by U.S. officials, the flawed U.S. policy of technology reciprocity, and the challenges of international collaboration. Its deep intimacy with the interplay of policy and economy will make this volume of intense interest to political scientists, military studies specialists, historians, and government officials.

Book excerpt: Joint ventures have become a common vehicle for companies to create strategic alliances with partners that have complementary capabilities and resources, fostering opportunities to exploit distribution channels, technology, or finance in ways not available to the sole partners. Simply put, in a joint venture, two or more parent companies agree to pool defined capital, technology, human resources, risks, and rewards in the formation of a distinct entity under shared control. The complexities of such an arrangement are magnified when the project embraces more than one jurisdiction. In this special issue of the Comparative Law Yearbook of International Business, practitioners who have specialized in domestic and cross border joint venture formations report on their respective jurisdictions as well as particular cross border issues. The volume provides national reports on Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Lebanon, The Philippines, Romania, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, and Vietnam. European competition law relative to joint ventures, taxation issues in The Netherlands, and governing law also are treated.
