Book The Reluctant Fundamentalist

Download or read book The Reluctant Fundamentalist written by Mohsin Hamid and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2009-06-05 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the award-winning Moth Smoke comes a perspective on love, prejudice, and the war on terror that has never been seen in North American literature. At a café table in Lahore, a bearded Pakistani man converses with a suspicious, and possibly armed, American stranger. As dusk deepens to night, he begins the tale that has brought them to this fateful meeting. . . Changez is living an immigrant’s dream of America. At the top of his class at Princeton, he is snapped up by Underwood Samson, an elite firm that specializes in the “valuation” of companies ripe for acquisition. He thrives on the energy of New York and the intensity of his work, and his infatuation with regal Erica promises entrée into Manhattan society at the same exalted level once occupied by his own family back in Lahore. For a time, it seems as though nothing will stand in the way of Changez’s meteoric rise to personal and professional success. But in the wake of September 11, he finds his position in his adopted city suddenly overturned, and his budding relationship with Erica eclipsed by the reawakened ghosts of her past. And Changez’s own identity is in seismic shift as well, unearthing allegiances more fundamental than money, power, and perhaps even love. Elegant and compelling, Mohsin Hamid’s second novel is a devastating exploration of our divided and yet ultimately indivisible world. “Excuse me, sir, but may I be of assistance? Ah, I see I have alarmed you. Do not be frightened by my beard: I am a lover of America. I noticed that you were looking for something; more than looking, in fact you seemed to be on a mission, and since I am both a native of this city and a speaker of your language, I thought I might offer you my services as a bridge.” —from The Reluctant Fundamentalist

Book Switched Reluctance Motor Drives

Download or read book Switched Reluctance Motor Drives written by R. Krishnan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The switched reluctance machine (SRM) is the least expensive electrical machine to produce, yet one of the most reliable. As such, research has blossomed during the last decade, and the SRM and variable drive systems using SRMs are receiving considerable attention from industry. Because they require a power electronic converter and controller to function, however, successful realization of an SRM variable drive system demands an understanding of the converter and controller subsystems and their integration with the machine. Switched Reluctance Motor Drives provides that understanding. It presents a unified view of the machine and its drive system from all of its system and subsystem aspects. With a careful balance of theory and implementation, the author develops the analysis and design of SRMs from first principles, introduces a wide variety of power converters available for driving the SRM, and systematically presents both low- and high-performance controllers. The book includes an in-depth study of acoustic noise and its minimization along with application examples that include comparisons between ac and dc drives and SRM drive. The result is the first book that provides a state-of-the-art knowledge of SRMs, power converters, and their use with both sensor-based and sensorless controllers. Switched Reluctance Motor Drives enables both students and engineers to learn all aspects of SRM drive systems and appreciate the interdependence of the various subsystems in performance optimization.

Book Reluctant Power

Download or read book Reluctant Power written by Rita Zajacz and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How early twentieth-century American policymakers sought to gain control over radiotelegraphy networks in an effort to advance the global position of the United States. In Reluctant Power, Rita Zajácz examines how early twentieth century American policymakers sought to gain control over radiotelegraphy networks in an effort to advance the global position of the United States. Doing so, she develops an analytical framework for understanding the struggle for network control that can be applied not only to American attempts to establish a global radio network in the early twentieth century but also to current US efforts to retain control of the internet. In the late nineteenth century, Britain was seen to control both the high seas and the global cable communication network under the sea. By the turn of the twentieth century, Britain's geopolitical rivals, including the United States, looked to radiotelegraphy that could circumvent Britain's dominance. Zajácz traces policymakers' attempts to grapple with both a new technology—radiotelegraphy—and a new corporate form: the multinational corporation, which managed the network and acted as a crucial intermediary. She argues that both foreign policy and domestic radio legislation were shaped by the desire to harness radiotelegraphy for geopolitical purposes and reveals how communication policy and aspects of the American legal system adjusted to the demands of a rising power. The United States was a reluctant power during the early twentieth century, because policymakers were unsure that companies headquartered in the United States were sufficiently American and doubted that their strategies served the national interest.

Book Electronic Control of Switched Reluctance Machines

Download or read book Electronic Control of Switched Reluctance Machines written by TJE Miller and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-05-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Switched reluctance motors have steadily increased in commercial importance since their introduction in the early 1980's, while their technology - especially of their electronic control - has made great progress. Their unique characteristics introduce a delicate balance, in which the copper and iron are diminished in quantity, complexity and cost, in favour of a greater reliance on sophistication in the controller. Thus mastery of the control is the key challenge in the application of these machines. This book is intended for engineer's in industry and in the large research community in electrical machines and drives. It introduces the techniques for controlling switched reluctance machines, starting from first principles and building up to the most advanced forms of sensorless control. It covers the recent advances in electronic control and includes aspects of motion control, automation, acoustic noise reduction and energy efficiency. Covers the recent changes in control technology Includes up-to-date equipment and methods Contains applications and case studies

Book The Rediscovery of Synchronous Reluctance and Ferrite Permanent Magnet Motors

Download or read book The Rediscovery of Synchronous Reluctance and Ferrite Permanent Magnet Motors written by Gianmario Pellegrino and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an essential compendium on the analysis and design of synchronous motors for variable-speed applications. Focusing on synchronous reluctance and ferrite permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous reluctance machines, it provides a broad perspective on three-phase machines for variable speed applications, a field currently dominated by asynchronous machines and rare-earth PM synchronous machines. It also describes synchronous reluctance machines and PM machines without rare-earth materials, comparing them to state-of-the-art solutions. The book provides readers with extensive information on and finite element models of PM synchronous machines, including all relevant equations and with an emphasis on synchronous-reluctance and PM-assisted synchronous-reluctance machines. It covers ferrite-assisted machines, modeled as a subcase of PM-assistance, fractional slot combinations solutions, and a quantitative, normalized comparison of torque capability with benchmark PM machines. The book discusses a wealth of techniques for identifying machine parameters, with an emphasis on self-commissioning algorithms, and presents methods for automated machine design and optimization, including a software tool developed for this purpose. Addressing an important gap in the field of PM-less and less-PM electrical machines, it is intended as a self-contained reference guide for both graduate students and professional machine designers, and as a useful text for university courses on automated and/or optimized design of electrical machines and drives.
