Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an overview and analysis of the contemporary location, distribution and dynamics of economic activity, uneven geographies of growth and the local economic development processes. Focus is on the localisation of the knowledge economy and talent, e.g. the part of the labour force which is central to the production, use and distribution of knowledge. The urban turn emphasises the importance of cities and city regions as the key places that generates economic growth in modern capitalism. The resurgence of large cities has happened concurrently with the rise of the knowledge economy and together with the increased use of talent. Thus, this book examines the relationships between the knowledge economy and city regions and how this challenge local and regional development.

Book Society Environment and Human Security in the Arctic Barents Region

Download or read book Society Environment and Human Security in the Arctic Barents Region written by Kamrul Hossain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-20 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic-Barents Region is facing numerous pressures from a variety of sources, including the effect of environmental changes and extractive industrial developments. The threats arising out of these pressures result in human security challenges. This book analyses the formation, and promotion, of societal security within the context of the Arctic-Barents Region. It applies the human security framework, which has increasingly gained currency at the UN level since 1994 (UNDP), as a tool to provide answers to many questions that face the Barents population today. The study explores human security dimensions such as environmental security, economic security, health, food, water, energy, communities, political security and digital security in order to assess the current challenges that the Barents population experiences today or may encounter in the future. In doing so, the book develops a comprehensive analysis of vulnerabilities, challenges and needs in the Barents Region and provides recommendations for new strategies to tackle insecurity and improve the wellbeing of both indigenous and local communities. This book will be a valuable tool for academics, policy-makers and students interested in environmental and human security, sustainable development, environmental studies and the Arctic and Barents Region in particular.

Book Biodiversity and ecosystem services in Nordic coastal ecosystems

Download or read book Biodiversity and ecosystem services in Nordic coastal ecosystems written by A. Belgrano and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2018-06-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the status and trends of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Nordic region, the drivers and pressures affecting them, interactions and effects on people and society, and options for governance. The main report consists of two volumes. Volume 1 The general overview (this report) and Volume 2 The geographical case studies. This study has been inspired by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystems Services (IPBES). It departs from case studies (Volume 2, the geographical case studies) from ten geographical areas in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden) and the autonomous areas of Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland. The aim was to describe status and trends of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Nordic region, including the drivers and pressures affecting these ecosystems, the effects on people and society and options for governance. The Nordic study is structured as closely as possible to the framework for the regional assessments currently being finalized within IPBES. The report highlights environmental differences and similarities in the Nordic coastal areas, like the inhabitants´ relation to nature and the environment as well as similarities in social and policy instruments between the Nordic countries. This study provides background material for decision-making and it is shown that Nordic cooperation is of great importance for sustainable coastal management and should be strengthened in future work.

Book Sharing Knowledge

  • Author : Arctic Council. Indigenous Peoples' Secretariat
  • Publisher : Nordic Council of Ministers
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 9289318465
  • Pages : 77 pages

Download or read book Sharing Knowledge written by Arctic Council. Indigenous Peoples' Secretariat and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Third Assessment Report identified Indigenous peoples as being among the groups most threatened by climate change. Principal factors leading to this vulnerability relate to Indigenous peoples' exposure to climate hazards and their high reliance on natural resources and ecosystems to sustain traditional livelihoods and cultural practices. Due to existing social and economic stresses on many communities, their capacity to cope with climate hazards is further reduced. Arctic Indigenous communities have to respond to major economic and cultural impacts. Their experience is an invaluable resource from which culturally appropriate adaptation strategies can be formulated. However, among the non-Indigenous scientific community there is little knowledge of the nature of Indigenous peoples specific vulnerability to climate impacts, or their past adaptation strategies. The importance of the interconnectedness between human health, culture and country for many Indigenous people must be understood by the non-Indigenous community for future work to be successful.

Book Office Markets and Public Policy

Download or read book Office Markets and Public Policy written by Colin Jones and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book that looks at how offices and office markets in cities have changed over the last 30 years. It analyses the long-term trends and processes within office markets, and the interaction with the spatial economy and the planning of cities. It draws on examples around the world, and looking forward at the future consequences of information communication technologies and the sustainability agenda, it sets out the challenges that now face investors. The traditional business centres of cities are losing their dominance to the brash new centres of the 1980s and 1990s, as the concept of the central business district becomes more diffuse. Edge cities, business space and office parks have entered the vocabulary as offices have also decentralised. The nature and pace of changes to office markets set within evolving spatial structures of cities has had implications for tenants and led to a demand for shorter leases. The consequence is a rethink of the traditional perception of property investment as a secure long term investment, and this is reflected in reduced investment holding periods by financial institutions. Office Markets & Public Policy analyses these processes and policy issues from an international perspective and covers: A descriptive and theoretical base encompassing an historical context, a review of the fundamentals of the demand for and supply of the office market and offices as an investment. Embedded within this section is a perspective on underlying forces particularly the influence of technological change. A synthesis of our understanding of the spatial structure and dynamics of local office markets at the city level. An assessment of the goals and influence of planning policies, and the evaluation of policies designed toward the long term sustainability of cities as services centres. This goes beyond standard real estate and urban economics books by assessing the changing shape of urban office markets within a spatial theoretical and policy context. It will be a useful advanced text for honours and postgraduate students of land economy; land management; property and real estate; urban planning; and urban studies. It will also be of interest to researchers, property professionals, policy-makers and planning practitioners.
