Book excerpt: What queer lives, loves and possibilities teem within suburbia's little boxes? Moving beyond the imbedded urban/rural binary, Relocations offers the first major queer cultural study of sexuality, race and representation in the suburbs. Focusing on the region humorists have referred to as Lesser Los Angeles-a global prototype for sprawl-Karen Tongson weaves through suburbia's nowherespaces to survey our spatial imaginaries: the aesthetic, creative and popular materials of the new suburbia.

Using robust empirical material this book offers a multidisciplinary, comprehensive overview, critique and extension of long-established theories underpinning patterns of firm (re)location. It explores dominant trends in the mobility and relocation of industries and firms, examines the factors guiding such trends and evaluates their consequences in both developed and emerging economies in Europe, Asia and Latin America. This book will be appreciated by diverse audiences. Geography and regional science researchers of ‘economic activity location’ can engage with the critical appraisal of key theoretical concepts and an analysis of recent empirical data. Practitioners, including local and regional policy makers and location consultants will enjoy the comparative discussion of solutions and practices adopted in localities, regions and countries as diverse as China, Brazil, The Netherlands and Poland.

Book Relocation in Urban Planning

Download or read book Relocation in Urban Planning written by Paul L. Niebanck and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relocation in Urban Planning deals with the vital and growing problems of displaced elderly persons within American cities. Reflecting an increasing concern for the incoming, housing, and psychological needs of the elderly, the authors suggest how existing programs should be developed. The research study, conducted by the Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, is presented in five sections. The opening section surveys advances made in relocation policy throughout the nation with the advent of large-scale redevelopment as a factor on the urban scene. Chapter 2 describes the elderly population subject to displacement and evaluates the ability of elderly persons to meet the rigors of urban life. In this section major existing programs are described along with their capacity to serve the needs of the relocated elderly. The authors then review four demonstration projects associated with the study. The study closes with a comprehensive statement of recommendations. The book is based, in large part, on several years' research into the relocation of elderly persons, conducted by the Institute for Environmental Studies in cooperation with the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials. Directing the study was Chester Rapkin, then Professor of City Planning at the University of Pennsylvania, and assisting him in the capacity of Director of Field Operations was Mary K. Nenno, Associate Director of N.A.H.R.O. Advance reviewers have described the book as "lucid and absorbing" and "of real value to workers and planners in the field."

Book Relocation Issues in Child Custody Cases

Download or read book Relocation Issues in Child Custody Cases written by Philip M. Stahl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Find out how evaluators, mediators, and judges deal with the issues of relocation in divorced families In the past, the relocation of a parent or child in custody cases was rarely a problem for divorced families—there was little conflict and little need for court intervention. But with the growth of shared custody, more fathers involved in parenting after divorce, and an increase in litigation between conflicted parents, relocation has become a complex issue that’s difficult for evaluators, judges, and public policymakers to resolve. Relocation Issues in Child Custody Cases offers a firsthand look at how evaluators investigate, predict, and make recommendations; how judges reach decisions based on those recommendations; and how individual states deal with relocation cases. Relocation Issues in Child Custody Cases examines how evaluators, mediators, and judges can best facilitate an environment where a child has an ongoing relationship with two parents, regardless of where each parent lives. This unique book looks at how the landscape in relocation cases has changed since the California Supreme Court’s landmark 2004 ruling in the LaMusga move-away case, examining relevant topics, including individual state statutes on relocation; a survey of courts in the United States; the functions of an evaluator; how a judge analyzes data before reaching a decision; parental conflict; domestic violence; change of circumstances; primary residence; and the process of developing parenting plans. Relocation Issues in Child Custody Cases examines: whether negative outcomes of parental relocation after divorce were a result of pre-existing conflict and domestic violence whether the “best interests of the child” is an acceptable standard in relocation cases investigative models for evaluators “for the move” and “against the move” biases—and how to reduce them a format for analyzing evidence in relocation cases the risks and benefits of presumptions in family law matters and much more Relocation Issues in Child Custody Cases is an essential resource for evaluators, mediators, judges, caseworkers, child psychologists, family therapists, and child advocates.
