Book The Culture and Development Manifesto

Download or read book The Culture and Development Manifesto written by Robert Klitgaard and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-12-18 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a manifesto for building on diverse cultural strengths in international development. Gently but firmly, it demonstrates how and why cultural studies and anthropology have fallen short in application-and, arguably, in terms of social science. Nonetheless, anthropology and cultural studies have much to offer, as the book shows through lively examples ranging from West Africa to South Sudan, from Haïti to Hawai'i, from Nepal to Native America. Anthropology can provide distinctive information and compelling descriptions, case studies of successful adaptation and resistance, the deconstruction of cultural texts, useful checklists, and processes for combining outside expertise and local knowledge. Beyond the important task of identifying how cultural features interact with particular projects, The Culture and Development Manifesto displays new ways to think about goals (and risks), new kinds of alternatives, new and perhaps métisse ways to implement, and, as a result, new kinds of politics"--

Book Re creating the Circle

Download or read book Re creating the Circle written by LaDonna Harris and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collaboration between Native activists, professionals, and scholars, Re-Creating the Circle brings a new perspective to the American Indian struggle for self-determination: the returning of Indigenous peoples to sovereignty, self-sufficiency, and harmony so that they may again live well in their own communities, while partnering with their neighbors, the nation, and the world for mutual advancement. Given the complexity in realizing American Indian renewal, this project weaves the perspectives of individual contributors into a holistic analysis providing a broader understanding of political, economic, educational, social, cultural, and psychological initiatives. The authors seek to assist not only in establishing American Indian nations as full partners in American federalism and society, but also in improving the conditions of Indigenous people world wide, while illuminating the relevance of American Indian tradition for the contemporary world facing an abundance of increasing difficulties.

Book Criminal Justice in Native America

Download or read book Criminal Justice in Native America written by Marianne O. Nielsen and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2009-04-09 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native Americans are disproportionately represented as offenders in the U.S. criminal justice system, particularly in the southwestern and north-central regions. However, until recently there was little investigation into the reasons for their over-representation. Furthermore, there has been little acknowledgment of the positive contributions of Native Americans to the criminal justice system—in rehabilitating offenders, aiding victims, and supporting service providers. This book offers a valuable and contemporary overview of how the American criminal justice system impacts Native Americans on both sides of the law. Each of the fourteen chapters of Criminal Justice in Native America was commissioned specifically for this volume. Contributors—many of whom are Native Americans—rank among the top scholars in their fields. Some of the chapters treat broad subjects, including crime, police, courts, victimization, corrections, and jurisdiction. Others delve into more specific topics, including hate crimes against Native Americans, state-corporate crimes against Native Americans, tribal peacemaking, and cultural stresses of police officers. Separate chapters are devoted to women and juveniles. The well-known scholar Marianne Nielsen provides a context-setting introduction, in which she addresses the history of the legal treatment of Native Americans in the United States as well as a provocative conclusion that details important issues for current and future research in Native American criminal justice studies. Intended to introduce students to the substantive concerns of a range of disciplines that contribute to Native American Studies—among them, criminal justice and criminology, law, sociology, and anthropology—Criminal Justice in Native America will interest all readers who are concerned about relationships between Native peoples and prevailing criminal justice systems.

Book Reclaiming Indigenous Governance

Download or read book Reclaiming Indigenous Governance written by William Nikolakis and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2019-10-22 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reclaiming Indigenous Governance examines the efforts of Indigenous peoples in four important countries to reclaim their right to self-govern. Showcasing Native nations, this timely book presents diverse perspectives of both practitioners and researchers involved in Indigenous governance in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States (the CANZUS states). Indigenous governance is dynamic, an ongoing relationship between Indigenous peoples and settler-states. The relationship may be vigorously contested, but it is often fragile—one that ebbs and flows, where hard-won gains can be swiftly lost by the policy reversals of central governments. The legacy of colonial relationships continues to limit advances in self-government. Yet Indigenous peoples in the CANZUS countries are no strangers to setbacks, and their growing movement provides ample evidence of resilience, resourcefulness, and determination to take back control of their own destiny. Demonstrating the struggles and achievements of Indigenous peoples, the chapter authors draw on the wisdom of Indigenous leaders and others involved in rebuilding institutions for governance, strategic issues, and managing lands and resources. This volume brings together the experiences, reflections, and insights of practitioners confronting the challenges of governing, as well as researchers seeking to learn what Indigenous governing involves in these contexts. Three things emerge: the enormity of the Indigenous governance task, the creative agency of Indigenous peoples determined to pursue their own objectives, and the diverse paths they choose to reach their goal.

Book excerpt: "What Good Condition? collects edited papers, initially delivered at the Treaty Advancing Reconciliation conference, on the proposal for a treaty between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians, a proposal which has been discussed and dissected for nearly 30 years. Featuring contributions from prominent Aboriginal community leaders, legal experts and academics, this capacious work provides an overview of the context and legacy of the residue of treaty proposals and negotiations in past decades; a consideration of the implications of treaty in an Indigenous, national and international context; and, finally, some reflections on regional aspirations and achievements."--Publisher's description.

Book All of Mexico

  • Author : Scott Benton
  • Publisher : iUniverse

  • ISBN : 0595498809
  • Pages : 516 pages

Download or read book All of Mexico written by Scott Benton and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of Mexico is seen through the eyes of Rimmon Squires, volunteer lieutenant on the staff of General Winfield Scott. Squires, a daguerreotypist, uses his skill with this breakthrough photographic technology to record the heroics and skullduggery of the United States first war of foreign conquest, following the old Cortez route to Mexico city. His lens captures Captain Robert E. Lee resting after his brilliant battle field reconnaissance at Cerro Gordo, the young artillery lieutenant, Tom Jackson, as he earns a brevet at Chapultepec and Sam Grant using a steeple emplaced howitzer with telling effect as the army assaults the Mexican capital. All of Mexico catches the defining moment in the ongoing history of our two neighboring republics. The army was led by men who were to become gray bearded heroes of the blue and gray forces of the Civil War. The Mexican war induced conflicting attitudes that still resonate today, shame at invading a sister republic, pride at gaining vast territories (what is now California and the southwestern states of the U. S.) and the realization of what was termed our national Manifest Destiny.

Book The Silver Bayonet

Download or read book The Silver Bayonet written by Joseph A. McCullough and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-11 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the wars of Napoleon ravage Europe, chaos and fear reign and the darkness that once clung to the shadows has been emboldened. Supernatural creatures – vampires, werewolves, ghouls, and worse take advantage of the havoc, striking out at isolated farms, villages, and even military units. Whether they are pursuing some master plan or simply revelling in their newfound freedom is unknown. Most people dismiss reports of these slaughters as the rantings of madmen or the lies of deserters, but a few know better... The Silver Bayonet is a skirmish wargame of gothic horror set during the Napoleonic Wars. Each player forms an elite band of monster hunters drawn from the ranks of one of the great powers. Riflemen, swordsmen, and engineers fight side-by-side with mystics, occultists, and even those few supernatural creatures that can be controlled or reasoned with enough to make common cause. The game can be played solo, co-operatively, or competitively, with players progressing through a series of interlinked adventures with their soldiers gaining experience and suffering grievous wounds, and their units triumphing... or falling in the face of the shadows. It is a game of action and adventure, where musket and sabre meet tooth and claw.
