Book Religious Views of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Views of Abraham Lincoln The author feels that no apology is needed in giving out this booklet to the public. For seven years, he has sought to lay under tribute everything which might give light upon the subject herein discussed. He has received a letter from Hon. Robert Lincoln which confirms many statements contained in this work. Much could be said of the claims made by Spiritualists in insisting that Lincoln looked with favor upon their peculiar doctrine. Likewise, the Universalists have come in to announce that Mr. Lincoln threw out friendly glances at them. The author has sufficient material upon the religious glimpses of Lincoln to fill a five hundred page volume. Had the book been swelled to a full grown work, the price would have limited its sale and many would never read it because of its size. The author feels that confining the matter in these humble limits, will do more in enlightening people in regard to what Mr. Lincoln believed in spiritual things than in a more pretentious work. He has been compelled to waive the discussions and claims made by exponents of different doctrines, and devote the entire work to the question whether Abraham Lincoln was a Christian or an Atheist. No thought of money-making has prompted the attempt to give out this work. The price has been placed at such a figure to assure neither loss nor gain to the writer. Hoping that by placing our ear near the heart of our great martyr, we may be able to hear him sing his songs in the night. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Opinions and Life of Abraham Lincoln As page after page was read, oh, so pitifully painful, again and again the thought persistently obtruded itself that Mr. Christian had been performing the fine - tooth-comb act. He seems to have gotten together all the awful things that have been said in derogation of Mr. Lincoln; at least if there are any worse ones I certainly never have heard of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Abraham Lincoln I think the world has occasion to rejoice that a mind like Lincoln's, in those early years of eager grasping after every form of light upon the mystery of exist ence, chanced to find some of the books, branded in conventional, church communities with odium, which have been the great emancipators of intelligence and conscience - books written by the Frenchmen, Vol taire and Volney, and by the patriot of our American Revolution, Thomas Paine, books which contain much that is crude and useless or even offensive to reason today with our larger View of the universe, but which in their day and generation did an inestimable work in teaching men to think courageously, to speak hon estly, and especially to be tolerant and sympathetic to wards differences of judgment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Riddle of Lincoln's Religion When Believe-it-or-not Ripley recently told his nation-wide radio audience that Abraham Lincoln committed the entire Bible to memory, he must have relied for acceptance of this unfamiliar claim upon the gullible nature of the American people who readily believe all reports of piety ascribed to their Sixteenth President. The statement was a fabulous exaggeration, but it did renew interest in the controversy. Regarding Lincoln's religious beliefs which has been waged for more. Than three quarters of a century. What was the character of his faith? Was he an atheist or an agnostic, or did he give his assent to the doctrines prescribed by any of the several Christian Churches of his day? NO Other phase of Lincoln's career has provoked such a prolonged and spirited disagreement. An early biography written by Dr. J. G. Holland, a distinguished theologian and hymnologist, contained what was intended to be convincing evidence of the Emancipator's accept ance of Christianity. This account, which enjoyed a large circulation, was pleasing to religionists, but an outspoken group of his devoted followers, believing that quite the contrary was true, vigorously disputed the claims. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Abraham Lincoln: Being a Reprint of the Lecture of Rev. Jas; A. Reed in 1872, and the Answering Lecture of W. H. Herndon in 1873 When a great man dies his biographers and eulogists usually begin to iron out the wrinkles of ruggedness in his life; his virtues are enlarged upon and his shortcomings minimized until finally the real man is oblit erated and in his stead a figure free from the traits of ordinary manhood is presented for the contemplation of future generations. This was true in the case of Washington, and is, to some extent, becoming so in the case of Abraham Lincoln. It is proper, therefore, to treasure up and preserve what is written about him by his associates. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
