Book Religious Studies Sketches and Poems

Download or read book Religious Studies Sketches and Poems written by Harriet Beecher Stowe and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You won't fail to be captured by one of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s greatest books 'Religious Studies, Sketches and Poems'. Religious and spiritual, the studies and poems reflect on how to live a godly life, discuss the afterlife, and the consequences of loss and tragedy. Stowe, herself, was very religious from early childhood and throughout her life, so it’s not surprising that an entire book was written by her about religious thought and feelings. This is a great collection of some of her best literature classic works. A thorn in the angry eyes of American slave owners, Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was an American author and ardent abolitionist. Her novel 'Uncle Tom’s Cabin' (1852) became one of the most famous literary attacks on slavery at the time. The novel was also turned into a play and made into movies more than once. The latest version from 1987 features Samuel L. Jackson. Stowe also wrote numerous travel memoirs, letters, articles, and short stories – all crucial to the depiction of the injustice of African Americans we still hear about today.

Book Harriet Beecher Stowe

Download or read book Harriet Beecher Stowe written by Nancy Koester and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "So you're the little woman who started this big war," Abraham Lincoln is said to have quipped when he met Harriet Beecher Stowe. Her 1852 novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin converted readers by the thousands to the anti-slavery movement and served notice that the days of slavery were numbered. Overnight Stowe became a celebrity, but to defenders of slavery she was the devil in petticoats. Most writing about Stowe treats her as a literary figure and social reformer while downplaying her Christian faith. But Nancy Koester's biography highlights Stowe’s faith as central to her life -- both her public fight against slavery and her own personal struggle through deep grief to find a gracious God. Having meticulously researched Stowe’s own writings, both published and un-published, Koester traces Stowe's faith pilgrimage from evangelical Calvinism through spiritualism to Anglican spirituality in a flowing, compelling narrative.

Book Letter and the Spirit of Nineteenth Century American Literature

Download or read book Letter and the Spirit of Nineteenth Century American Literature written by Thomas Loebel and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2005-01-12 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving back to the trial of Anne Hutchinson in Puritan Massachusetts and the captivity narrative of Mary Rowlandson in order to analyse theo-political signification, Loebel provides a new context for examining the politically performative function of language in such texts as "The Scarlet Letter," "Uncle Tom's Cabin," and "Waiting for the Verdict." He also argues, however, that a specific theo-logic manifests itself in the political rhetoric of the nation, such that the afterlife of the "New Jerusalem" resonates not just in the "Blessings of Liberty" enshrined in the Constitution but also in the shift from a religious understanding of union with Jesus to that of the Union of States as a nation. Loebel compares unionist and confederate discourse, opening up new ways of theorising representation as a political, theological, legal, and literary issue that has continued currency both in twentieth-century literature and in the political discourse of America's global vision, such as the "axis of evil" and the "new world order." Anyone interested in American literature and culture will view the relationship between ethics and justice differently after reading this book.

This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Highlights from Volume 35 include: . the poetry of Robert Southey . the verse of Edmund Spenser . the philosophy of Benedict Spinoza . the writings of Madame de Stal . the poetry of Edmund Clarence Stedman . excerpts from Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy . the writings of Robert Louis Stevenson . excerpts from Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin . and much, much more.
