Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Studies for Laymen: Studies in Theology Three things are attempted in the present revision of the First S eries of Studies in Theology. First of all the arrangement of the chapters has been changed. The purpose has been to secure, if possible, a more consist ent order in the presentation of subjects. It has been difficult to do this because each lecture was first given entirely independent of the others, and therefore had no necessary logical connection with them. The purpose only was to consider related lines of thought in order to secure a point of view from which to take up later some of the problems suggested thereby. The present attempt to secure a logical order can be but imperfect for the reason that no such order originally existed. The present attempt to secure a logical order can be but imperfect for the reason that no such order originally existed. In the next place, there has been a careful revision of the text itself. The main criticism passed upon the earlier work, so far as I can judge, has been that the language used was too much that of the text-book and class room. I have defended the use of some technical terms on the ground that if a real educational advance is to be made, the words most frequently used nowadays in Science and Theology should become a part of the layman's vocabulary. I have come to appreciate more than ever the difficulties under which we labor in attempting, to translate abstract theological questions into the form of everyday thought. However, if these questions are stated in a concrete way, it does not seem to me the task is impossible. In the present attempt to do this I have deliberately used many illustrations which did not appear in the original lectures. It is hoped that the liberal use of illustrations will enable the reader to grasp more easily the points of view here presented. Finally, I have prepared a number of Questions for Study. These are to be used in connection with preparation for the weekly lesson. The answers to most of these questions may be found in the text; but a few others are added which will require original thought. Book The Layman s Manual on Christian Apologetics

Download or read book The Layman s Manual on Christian Apologetics written by Brian G. Chilton and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Christians have been bombarded by objections launched against the Christian faith from popular secular authors, bloggers, and stars from the entertainment industry. The church is quickly beginning to acknowledge the need for apologetics due to the number of youth and adults alike leaving the faith. But how does one respond to these objections? For the laity of the church, this is especially difficult, as many are left without the proper training to know how to answer these objections. In The Layman's Manual on Christian Apologetics, the essentials of apologetics are taken from the ivory towers of academia and are made available to those who have not obtained seminary training or for those thinking about attending seminary. In this book, three major areas of apologetics are covered. The first unit engages the nature of truth and what can be known. The second unit deals with the existence of God and issues involving God's existence. The last unit tackles historical objections to the resurrection of Jesus and early Christianity. The Layman's Manual on Christian Apologetics delivers heavy apologetic issues with the laity in mind and blends in personal illustrations to make the material applicable.

Book The Faith of the People of God

Download or read book The Faith of the People of God written by John Macquarrie and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 1972-01-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A helpful book, marked by wide reading and rich thought. I commend it not only for the lonely reader but for groups who would like to explore the calling and mission of the people of God' (Baptist Times). 'This is a splendid book for anyone who wants to "break into" theology and is not quite sure how to go about U. One would hope it is also a spur to those who are tempted to give up the theological effort' (Church of Ireland Gazette). 'A model of how really good and attractive theology can only come from scholars who know their faith and have given themselves over to the study of it with openness and devotion ... An excellent text for study groups which were really prepared to enter deeply into the much-needed reinterpretation and modernization of our traditional faith' (Heythrop Journal). 'A fine example of a systematic theologian writing for a non-specialist readership' (Journal of Theological Studies). 'A very sensible way of approaching those fundamental doctrines of the faith, concerning the nature of God, of the person of Christ, and of salvation, which when they confront us may nowadays seem, and not only to laymen, singularly formidable ... Such a book as this demands attentive reading. Nevertheless it is easily digestible and--in its lucidity and comprehensiveness--most rewarding' (Expository Times).

Book Ordinary Theology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeff Astley
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2017-07-05
  • ISBN : 1351913522
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Ordinary Theology written by Jeff Astley and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ordinary theology' is Jeff Astley's phrase for the theology and theologising of Christians who have received little or no theological education of a scholarly, academic or systematic kind. Astley argues that an in-depth study of ordinary theology, which should involve both empirical research and theological reflection, can help recover theology as a fundamental dimension of every Christian's vocation. Ordinary Theology analyses the problems and possibilities of research and reflection in this area. This book explores the philosophical, theological and educational dimensions of the concept of ordinary theology, its significance for the work of the theologian as well as for those engaged in the ministry of the church, and the criticisms that it faces. 'Ordinary theology' Astley writes, 'is the church's front line. Statistically speaking, it is the theology of God's church.'
