Book Religious Orientation and Sexual Behavior of College Students

Download or read book Religious Orientation and Sexual Behavior of College Students written by Elizabeth Anne Stoddard and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between religiosity and sexual behavior of college students by using a measure of religious orientation to define religiosity. Religious orientation refers to individuals' motivations for religious involvement and personal faith. Religious orientations are characterized as being extrinsic, intrinsic, indiscriminately proreligious or nonreligious. Four null hypotheses were formulated. It was hypothesized that there would be no significant difference in rates of premarital sexual intercourse or participation in oral-genital sexual activity between subjects of differing religious orientation. It was also hypothesized that the demographic variables of gender, grade point average, academic classification and ethnicity were not significantly related to religious orientation and virginity or religious orientation and participation in oral-genital sexual activity. The sample consisted of 235 never married, heterosexual college students aged 17 to 24, enrolled at a west coast independent university. Subjects completed three selfreport instruments: the Religious Orientation Scale, the Lifetime Sexual Behaviors Scale and a demographic survey. Data were analyzed using Pearson chi square, Fisher two-tail tests, t-tests and logistical regression. Results indicate that there are significant differences in the sexual behavior of students of differing religious orientations. Intrinsic students were significantly less likely to participate in premarital sexual intercourse or oral-genital sexual activity. For females, students with GPA's of 3.0 or less, non-first year students, first year students and sophomores grouped together, seniors, nonseniors, Roman Catholics, non-Agnostics, non-Atheists, Caucasians, non-African-Americans, non-Latinos and non- Asian/Pacific Islanders, the relationship between intrinsic religious orientation and virginity is significant. The relationship between participation in oral-genital sex and intrinsic religious orientation is significant for non-first year students, non-Roman Catholics, non-Agnostics, Caucasians, non-African Americans and non-Latinos. Other findings indicate that students stating that religion was an important factor in their lives were less likely to engage in premarital sexual intercourse. Intrinsic students were significantly more likely to be virgins than nonvirgins. Scores on the Intrinsic Scale of the Religious Orientation Survey and acadeniic class were significant predictors of virginity when combined with intrinsicness.

Book Gay on God s Campus

Download or read book Gay on God s Campus written by Jonathan S. Coley and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the LGBT movement has made rapid gains in the United States, LGBT people continue to face discrimination in faith communities. In this book, sociologist Jonathan S. Coley documents why and how student activists mobilize for greater inclusion at Christian colleges and universities. Drawing on interviews with student activists at a range of Christian institutions of higher learning, Coley shows that students, initially drawn to activism because of their own political, religious, or LGBT identities, are forming direct action groups that transform university policies, educational groups that open up campus dialogue, and solidarity groups that facilitate their members' personal growth. He also shows how these LGBT activists apply their skills and values after graduation in subsequent political campaigns, careers, and family lives, potentially serving as change agents in their faith communities for years to come. Coley's findings shed light on a new frontier of LGBT activism and challenge prevailing wisdom about the characteristics of activists, the purpose of activist groups, and ultimately the nature of activism itself. Download or read book Sex and the Soul written by Donna Freitas and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on dozens of face-to-face interviews, Sex and the Soul explores the sexual and spiritual lives of today's college students. Donna Freitas crisscrossed the country, visiting a range of America's colleges and universities--from public to private, Catholic to evangelical--to find out what students had to say about these highly personal subjects. Their stories will not only engage readers, but, in many cases, move them with the painful struggles these candid young women and men face. Indeed, the book uncovers aspects of college life that may unsettle some readers, especially parents. Many campuses, for instance, are dominated by the pervasiveness of hook-up culture. Moreover, many students see little connection between sex and religion, even as they seek one between sex and spirituality. Indeed, these observations hold true even at Catholic schools. Only at evangelical colleges is religion an important factor when deciding whether or not to engage in sex. But Freitas's research also reveals that, even at secular schools, students are not comfortable with a culture of casual sex, and that they do want spirituality, at least, if not also religion, to speak about what they should do and who they should try to be--not just what they should avoid doing. Sex and the Soul will offer readers the chance to hear college students speaking honestly about extremely sensitive topics, in a book that will be of great interest to students, parents, clergy, teachers, and anyone who wants to know what's happening on today's college campuses. Named one of the Best Religion Books of 2008 by Publishers Weekly "Fascinating, disturbing...engaging...persuasive.... Freitas's work chronicles a poignant spiritual loss that students themselves articulate and mourn." --Publishers Weekly "Candid, disturbing, yet ultimately hopeful....Throughout this beautifully written book, Freitas presents students' feelings and experiences in an unflinching yet compassionate way. You care about these young people and their struggles. This book is a great service to students, parents, and those at colleges and universities who want to prepare young adults not just for the workplace but for healthy and fulfilling lives." --Christian Science Monitor

Book Exploring College Students Relationship with God as a Potential Mediator Between Religious Behaviors and Sexual and Alcohol Risk Behavior Among College Students

Download or read book Exploring College Students Relationship with God as a Potential Mediator Between Religious Behaviors and Sexual and Alcohol Risk Behavior Among College Students written by Erin Whitney Moore and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many college students frequently engage in two behaviors -- sexual activity and alcohol use -- that can potentially lead to significant negative consequences, such as contracting a sexually transmitted infection or personal injury, respectively. College students also tend to be a population with strong religious beliefs and regular engagement in religious behaviors. Some research indicates that more frequent engagement in religious behavior is associated with less risky behavior (e.g., initiation of sex, fewer sexual partners, decreased alcohol use) among college students. However, previous research is mixed on why this association exists. The current study explored "relationship with God" as a religious construct that potentially mediates the relationship between religious behaviors and alcohol and sexual risk behaviors (lifetime and last 3 months). The sample consisted of 406 University of Missouri-Kansas City students. Data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics Version 19 and AMOS Version 18. Findings indicated participants' increased engagement in religious behaviors was significantly associated with stronger beliefs that God influenced their alcohol use decision-making, which was in turn, associated with less alcohol use in the last three months. This finding suggested that God control beliefs partially mediated the protective relationship between religious behaviors and recent alcohol use. There were no significant relationships between relationship with God variables and lifetime alcohol use and lifetime or recent sexual risk. Future research should continue to explore this area with larger samples that allow for sex and race/ethnicity comparisons regarding relationship with God and risk behavior. Interventions for reducing college students' alcohol use may consider incorporating messages that discuss God control beliefs.

Book A Comparison of Sexual Attitudes and Behaviors Among Evangelical and Mainline Protestant College Students

Download or read book A Comparison of Sexual Attitudes and Behaviors Among Evangelical and Mainline Protestant College Students written by Howard Brandon Risher and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual attitudes, intrinsic religiosity, and demographic variables were compared among 149 evangelical and mainline Protestant Christian students. Previous literature has theorized a positive relationship between conservative religious orientation and restrictive sexual attitudes and behaviors. The purpose of the present study was to gain more insight into how religiosity influences daily life, attitudes towards non-procreative sexual acts, and sexual partnerships within the past 12 months and in the lifetime. Archival data included several measures: the Intrinsic Religious Orientation, the Sex, Love, & Marriage Questionnaires, the Sexual Opinion Survey, and the Mosher Sex Guilt Inventory. Additionally, a question on sexual discomfort was borrowed from the Sex Myth Questionnaire. The study examined differences in age of first dating, age at first intercourse, and number of sexual partners in the past. Results revealed group differences in the importance of religion in daily life decisions and in church attendance. Evangelical Protestants were more likely to be a virgin than mainline students. No group differences were found in number of past sexual partners or age at sexual initiation. The various measures of sexual conservatism were significantly intercorrelated. The conservative Protestant students proved to be more sexually restrictive than the mainline students on several measures. However, the finding that most students reported some degree of sexual experience is consistent with the growing secularization of norms among Protestants.

Book The Effect of College Student Spirituality on Alcohol Use and Sexual Behaviors

Download or read book The Effect of College Student Spirituality on Alcohol Use and Sexual Behaviors written by Kristen S. Miller and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College-aged individuals have a significant impact on national health. People in this age group have the highest rates of engagement in many risky health behaviors, such as binge drinking, substance use, and engaging in unprotected sexual activity. The American College Health Association (ACHA) has been actively involved in the study of college health behavior and the initiation of information and services to college health care providers for the past decade. However, little research has been done in this area on sub-populations of the overall college population. This study aims to assess the sub-population of students who attend a faith-based institution. This population is of particular interest due to the significant impact that, both internal and external, religiosity/spirituality have on health behaviors. Data were requested from institutions that have utilized the National College Health Assessment (NCHA-II) and also have identified themselves as Protestant or Other Christian. The data was aggregated and randomly sampled for comparison to a random matched sample from the national reference group. Comparative analyses found significant group differences in the levels of engagement in alcohol use, binge drinking, and number of sexual partners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College students hook up and have sex. That is what many students expect to happen during their time at university—it is part of growing up and navigating the relationship scene on most American campuses today. But what do you do when you’re a student at an evangelical university? Students at these schools must negotiate a barrage of religiously imbued undercurrents that impact how they think about relationships, in addition to how they experience and evaluate them. As they work to form successful unions, students at evangelical colleges balance sacred ideologies of purity, holiness, and godliness, while also dealing with more mainstream notions of popularity, the online world, and the appeal of sexual intimacy. In From Single to Serious, Dana M. Malone shines a light on friendship, dating, and, sexuality, in both the ideals and the practical experiences of heterosexual students at U. S. evangelical colleges. She examines the struggles they have in balancing their gendered and religious presentations of self, the expectations of their campus community, and their desire to find meaningful romantic relationships.
