Book Transforming the Church in Africa

Download or read book Transforming the Church in Africa written by Vernon E. Light and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a must-read for serious Christians hoping to obey the Great Commission to make disciples in Africa. Vernon strikes an admirable balance between academic depth and practical application, helping us to appreciate the interface between the gospel of Jesus Christ and the traditional African worldview. I heartily recommend this book to all thinking Christian leaders in Africa pastors, teachers, and missionaries. Kevin G. Smith, DLitt, PhD Vernon Light wrote this book with an apostolic passion in the way the apostles presented and proclaimed the Gospel to world religions and cultures. It is an exciting study of African traditional religion and its relation to Christianity. It shows that for Christianity to thrive and be relevant, biblically and transformationally, in Africa, firstly, Christian scholars and theologians are needed who understand and address Africa's traditional heritage and Western modern, postmodern, and pluralistic ideologies and, secondly, the Gospel must be contextually, relevantly, meaningfully, and practically taught through an effective discipleship program. The book, based on extensive research and massive use of resources, is a valuable tool for students, pastors, scholars, and theologians interested in the state of Christianity and religious change in Africa. Professor Yusufu Turaki, PhD Much more than being a useful resource, this is a book with a mission. Like Jeremiah of old (Jer 20:9), Vernon is a man with a passion and message from God to the society to which God has called him. Like Jeremiah, Vernon is totally convinced of the absolute truth of his message in the midst of a myriad of conflicting opinions and that his message will change society from disaster to hope. Would that it is heard! Professor David T. Williams, DTh The Rev. Vernon E. Light (BSc, BDHons, MTh) is a member of the academic staff at the South African Theological Seminary.

Book The Insanity of Obedience

Download or read book The Insanity of Obedience written by Nik Ripken and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wise Sheep Among the Wolves All Christian disciples have one thing in common: as they carry the gospel across the ocean and across the street, persecution will become the norm for those who choose to follow Jesus. How believers respond in the face of persecution reveals everything about their level of faith and obedience. The Insanity of Obedience is a bold challenge to global discipleship. Nik Ripken exposes the danger of safe Christianity and calls readers to something greater. The Insanity of Obedience challenges Christians in the same, provocative way that Jesus did. This book dares you—and prepares you—to cross the street and the oceans with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Some of Jesus’ instructions sound uncomfortable and are potentially dangerous. We may be initially encouraged by His declaration, “I am sending you out.” But how are we to respond when He then tells us that He is sending us out “like sheep among wolves"? In light of the words of Jesus, how can modern day believers rest comfortably in the status quo? How can we embrace casual faith in light of the radical commands of Jesus which are anything but casual? Ripken brings decades of ministry experience in some of the most persecuted areas of the world to bear on our understanding of faith in Jesus. The Insanity of Obedience is a call to roll up your sleeves . . . and to follow and partner with Jesus in the toughest places on this planet. "We have the high privilege of answering Jesus’ call to go," Ripken says. "But let us be clear about this: we go on His terms, not ours. If we go at all, we go as sheep among wolves." Jesus gives us Himself. And He gives us the tools necessary for those who dare to journey with Him.

Book Religion Politics and Cults in East Africa

Download or read book Religion Politics and Cults in East Africa written by Emmanuel K. Twesigye and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Religion, Politics and Cults in East Africa is the first major, original, and extensive research-based study of the apocalyptic and doomsday Catholic Marian Movement and its Benedictine monastic moral and religious practices, including vows of poverty, celibacy, obedience, daily contemplation in silence, and hard work. The Marian Movement is presented within the cultural, historical, political, and religious context of the East African Revival Movement, the Anglican Balokole Movement, Alice Lakwena's Holy Spirit Movement, Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), and other religio-political liberation movements, including the Maji Maji, the Mau Mau, and Nyabingi Liberation Movement. The Marian Movement was locally known as "Abanyabugoto" and "The Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God". It began in 1989 as a Catholic women's Marian devotional and moral reformation movement, founded and headed by Keledonia Mwerinde. Faced with African cultural patriarchy and male-dominated Catholic Church hierarchy, Mwerinde recruited Joseph Kibwetere and the Rev. Fr. Dominic Kataribabo to serve as the public face of the Marian Movement. In response to Catholic hierarchy's opposition and persecution, Fr. Kataribabo designed a theology of ritual sacrifice, atonement, and martyrdoms for the devout Marian Catholics, who were devotees of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He martyred the Marian devotees in March 2000, in order to transform them into Mary's saints, and to liberate their souls and send them to heaven, where they would instantly attain eternal life, lasting peace, and happiness."--Publisher's website.

Book Mombawa Walking in Faith and Obeidence

Download or read book Mombawa Walking in Faith and Obeidence written by Dave Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if God asked you and your family to go to the depths of Africa as a missionary...today...really? After pastoring for many years, I was now working in a local church waiting for a new assignment from heaven; that's what God asked me, David Baldwin, to do. This book will tell you the amazing story of how being faithful and obedient to God's voice, changed our family, our church, and more importantly the whole district of Moyamba starting in the village of Mombawa. Before God spoke, I had never heard of this place and never dreamed of ever being there, of course. But wait...there's more. You may be saying to yourself, "I'm not going to go to Africa or delve into missions like David Baldwin did." But when God speaks to you to do something, how will you respond? This story of a man's faithful obedience will change your life! Here's what Pastor Baldwin promises... "You can learn from my journey how to be faithful and obedient to the Lord in your walk with Christ. I want to impart to you many godly principles and life lessons that will empower you to deepen your faith and obey His voice whatever the cost or consequences in the world you may face. Scripture tells us that every person who builds a tower must count the cost. Faithful listening and obeying God's voice in every decision of life will build a legacy which will bless others and give glory to God. "Throughout each chapter and at each chapter's conclusion, there will be an opportunity for you to reflect, meditate, and act upon what God is asking of you in every aspect of your life. Ultimately, this book isn't about me, but what God was doing in me and through me to share the gospel with others. What kind of book is your life writing?" - What distractions do you need to overcome in order to listen to God's voice? - What is God asking you to be faithful and obedient in doing at this very moment? God will speak to you personally through these pages. Will you read? Will you listen? Will you obey?
