Book Pioneers of Religious Liberty in America

Download or read book Pioneers of Religious Liberty in America written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Religious Liberty in America: Being the Great and Thursday Lectures Delivered in Boston in Nineteen Hundred and Three Two hundred and seventy-two years ago, John Cotton, minister of the First Church in Boston, with the co-operation of his ministerial associates, established what soon came to be known as the "Great and Thursday Lecture." This weekly lecture was in colonial times the chief social and religious event in Boston. In 1775 it was discontinued; but at the conclusion of the siege of Boston it was revived, and has since had a continuous existence. It has been the occasion for the discussion of public affairs as well as matters of theological interest. It is probably a unique institution in American life. With the aid of two helpful friends, the American Unitarian Association has been able to unite with the minister and Standing Committee of the First Church to carry forward on this ancient foundation a course of lectures upon Religious Liberty in America. These lectures have attracted so much public interest that they are now published by the Association for larger circulation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church and State in the United States: Or the American Idea of Religious Liberty and Its Practical Effects, With Official Documents American Church History has yet to be written. We are so busy making history that we have little time to study and to write history. But monographs on sectional and local topics are multiplying fast, and already present a formidable mass of material for a comprehensive view of the whole field. There is scarcely a more inviting task for a rising Ameri can historian than to exhibit from the broad platform of truth and justice, in life-like reproduction, the genesis and growth of American Christianity in its connections with the mother Christianity of Europe, its distinctive peculiarities, and its great mission for the future. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Liberty in the United States The cradle of religious liberty has been rocked by the worst passions of mankind. Until comparatively recent times, every sect was intol erant from conviction, and held it as a sacred duty to banish or burn the unrepentant heretics. Even heretics, when they became dominant, were not less intolerant toward their former orthodox persecutors. Do unto others as others have done unto you was the rule of persecutors. Heresy, whatever it may signify ecclesiastically, was his torically the penalty for dissent exacted by the State religion from conscientious sectaries. I never knew the time in England, said Milton, when men of truest religion were not counted sectaries.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Rise of Religious Liberty in America written by Sanford H. Cobb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Religious Liberty in America: A History Though the title of this work suggests a topic having a religious aspect, yet the hook itself offers no history of the churches or of religion in America. That field is well occupied by such works as those of Baird, Dorchester, Bacon, and others, and by denominational histories. The aim of the present work is political rather than religious. It attempts a systematic narrative - so far as the author is aware, not hitherto published - of that historical development through which the civil law in America came at last, after much struggle, to the decree of entire liberty of conscience and of worship. It is thus purely historical, and confines itself rigidly to those incidents in colonial history which are closely related to this special theme. The purpose is to exhibit in proper historical sequence those influences and events which guided the American republics to their unique solution of the world-old problem of Church and State - a solution so unique, so far-reaching, and so markedly diverse from European principles as to constitute the most striking contribution of America to the science of government. With such aim and for the double purpose of correcting certain popular misconceptions and of placing plainly before the mind the complete goal of this historical progress, it has seemed desirable to define in the first chapter the elements of a pure religious liberty, as that principle has embedded itself in the American mind and law. Book Calvert and Penn Or the Growth of Civil and Religious Liberty in America

Download or read book Calvert and Penn Or the Growth of Civil and Religious Liberty in America written by Brantz Mayer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calvert and Penn; Or the Growth of Civil and Religious Liberty in America: As Disclosed in the Planting of Maryland and Pennsylvania It is a venerable and beautiful rite which commands the Chinese not only to establish in their dwellings a Hall of Ancestors, devoted to memorials of kindred who are dead, but which obliges them, on a certain day of every year, to quit the ordinary toils of life and hasten to the tombs of their Forefathers, where, with mingled services of festivity and worship, they pass the hours in honoring the manes of those whom they have either loved or been taught to respect for their virtues. This is a wholesome and ennobling exercise of the memory. It teaches neither a blind allegiance to the past, nor a superstitious reverence for individuals; but it is a recognition of the great truth that no man is a mere isolated being in the great chain of humanity, and that, while we are not selfishly independent of the past, so also, by equal affinity, we are connected with and control the fate of those who are to succeed us in the drama of the world. The Time that merges in Eternity, sinks like a drop in the ocean, but the deeds of that Time, like the drop in the deep, are again exhaled and fitted for new uses; so that although the Time be dead, the acts thereof are immortal - for the achieved action never perishes. That which was wrought, in innocence or wrong, is eternal in its results or influences. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Development of Religious Liberty in Connecticut Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Development of Religious Liberty in Connecticut Classic Reprint written by M. Louise Greene and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Religious Liberty in Connecticut The following monograph is the outgrowth of three earlier and shorter essays. The first, "Church and State in Connecticut to 1818," was presented to Yale University as a doctor's thesis. The second, a briefer and more popularly written article, won the Straus prize offered in 1896 through Brown University by the Hon. Oscar S. Straus. The third, a paper containing additional matter, was so far approved by the American Historical Association as to receive honorable mention in the Justin Winsor prize competition of 1901. With such encouragement, it seemed as if the history of the development of religious liberty in Connecticut might serve a larger purpose than that of satisfying personal interest alone. In Connecticut such development was not marked, as so often elsewhere, by wild disorder, outrageous oppression, tyranny of classes, civil war, or by any great retrograde movement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roger Williams: The Pioneer of Religious Liberty In 1834 Professor James D. Knowles pub lished a memoir Of Roger Williams, which, though encumbered with documents, was a valuable contribution toward a more cor rect estimate of the character and work Of this great reformer. This, in 1846, was fol lowed by a shorter life written by Professor William Gammell of Brown University; and in 1852 Rev. Dr. Romeo Elton published a life containing some additional data de rived from the Sadleir correspondence. All of these biographies are long out of print. Since these were written some valuable ad ditional material has been discovered. I have freely consulted this, as well as every reliable source of information, especially the records and the works Of Roger Williams himself. Wherever possible I have let him speak through his own writings, as best cal culated to illustrate his motives and personal characteristics. He was the pioneer Of Re ligious Liberty. His whole life throbbed with that principle, upon which as a basis he was the first to establish a political com munity. The influence Of his lively experi ment I will not attempt to measure. He was the apostle Of the American system Of a free Church in a free State. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
