J When Mr. Charles K. Landis drove the now famous stake in the wilderness on the 8th of August, 1861, near where the West Jersey Railroad station now stands, he established not only a landmark, but a great historical starting point. This area was then a vast wilderness. It was such a wilderness that the conduct or refused to stop the railroad train at the prospective city, and instead put Mr. Landis off near what is now Newfield, forcing him to walk five miles to drive his fancied city-centered stake. It was such a wilderness that Mr. Landis had to walk out to Sharp's corner on Main road to get his dinner. It was such a wilderness that the railroad officials refused to build a platform so people could get off the cars. It was such a wilder ness that the government refused to recognize Vineland as a post office until Mr. Landis gave security for the expense incurred. Yet Mr. Landis, a young man of twenty-eight, had the faith and courage and grit to walk over this wilderness for weeks and months, and employ men to survey and lay out roads and avenues, and pull stumps and haul dirt. He advertised town lots and farms until he had not only spent all of his own re sources, but had eventually gone in debt over three hundred thousand dollars to improve and beautify the prospective enterprise. New Curriculum History challenges prior occlusions in the field, building upon and departing from previous waves of scholarship, extending the focus beyond the insularity of public schooling, the traditional framework of the self-contained nation-state, and the psychology of the schooled individual. Drawing on global studies, historical sociology, postcolonial studies, critical race theory, visual culture theory, disability studies, psychoanalytics, Cambridge school structuralisms, poststructuralisms, and infra- and transnational approaches the volume holds together not despite but because of differences and incommensurabilities in rereading historical records.

According to Urie Bronfenbrenner, one of the world's foremost developmental psychologists, laboratory studies of the child's behavior sacrifice too much in order to gain experimental control and analytic rigor. Laboratory observations, he argues, too often lead to "the science of the strange behavior of children in strange situations with strange adults for the briefest possible periods of time." To understand the way children actually develop, Bronfenbrenner believes that it will be necessary to observe their behavior in natural settings, while they are interacting with familiar adults over prolonged periods of time. This book offers an important blueprint for constructing such a new and ecologically valid psychology of development. The blueprint includes a complete conceptual framework for analysing the layers of the environment that have a formative influence on the child. This framework is applied to a variety of settings in which children commonly develop, ranging from the pediatric ward to daycare, school, and various family configurations. The result is a rich set of hypotheses about the developmental consequences of various types of environments. Where current research bears on these hypotheses, Bronfenbrenner marshals the data to show how an ecological theory can be tested. Where no relevant data exist, he suggests new and interesting ecological experiments that might be undertaken to resolve current unknowns. Bronfenbrenner's groundbreaking program for reform in developmental psychology is certain to be controversial. His argument flies in the face of standard psychological procedures and challenges psychology to become more relevant to the ways in which children actually develop. It is a challenge psychology can ill-afford to ignore.

Originally conceived as privately subsidized social experiments, free of socialist or nationalist ringes, these groups sought to overcome anti-Semitism while striving for a more creative life and almost at once, true to their basic Jewish sense of family and self-help, the experiments in farming became programs for saving lives, first from the sanctioned savagery of Alexander III, later from the holocaust of Nazi Germany. These colonizing experiments, says Dr. Brandes, were both a kaleidoscope and a mirror of the major forces in modern Jewish life. Agrarianism, Americanism, Zionism, a testing traditional values all were to be found here in microcosm. [They are]a significant chapter in the history of a people straining from oppression to freedom.
