Book Maori Religion and Mythology

Download or read book Maori Religion and Mythology written by Edward Shortland and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-12 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maori religion is the religious beliefs and practice of the Maori, the Polynesian indigenous people of New Zealand. Some Maori adopted Christianity in the early 19th century. Today, Christian prayer (karakia) is the expected way to begin and end Maori public gatherings of many kinds. Prayers are also made at the beginning of many new projects, personal journeys, and endeavours. In some ways, however, the modern religious practices of the Maori can be seen as utilising Christian practice to satisfy traditional cultural imperatives. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, new religions arose, combining various aspects of Christianity with traditional and non-traditional Maori philosophies. These include the influential Ratana church. According to the 2006 New Zealand Census, there are 2,427 people who believe in Maori religions of various denominations, including 609 Hauhau.

Download or read book The Fixed and the Fickle written by Hans Mol and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the effect of religion on the identity of the native Maoris and Pakehas (white settlers in New Zealand. The description is woven around the idea that the fixed (identity) is constantly "unglued" by the fickle (change). The Maori charismatic movements are seen as attempts to absorb the devastating effects of Pakeha incursion into a viable system of meaning. Yet the white white settlers, too, had to tame the discontinuities with the past and the ravages of cultural change. Religion is seen to be at the forefront of the struggle to defend and reinforce the boundaries around the variety of identities. In presenting his thesis, the author has brought together a wide range of information—other anthropological and sociological studies, historical accounts, official statements, and religious census data. The volume will be of interest to students of sociology, anthropology, and religion.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maori Religion and Mythology: Illustrated by Translations of Traditions, Karakia, &C to Which Are Added Notes on Maori Tenure of Land The others not being sufficiently skilled in writing, it was necessary to take down their information from dictation. In doing this I particularly instructed my informant to tell his tale as if he were relating it to his own people, and to use the same words that he would use if he were recounting similar tales to them when assembled in a sacred house. This they are, or perhaps I should rather say were, in the habit of doing at times of great weather disturbance accompanied with storm of wind and rain, believing an effect to be thereby.
