Book Re forming texts music and church art in the Early Modern North

Download or read book Re forming texts music and church art in the Early Modern North written by Tuomas Lehtonen and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our historical understanding of the Reformation in northern Europe has tended to privilege the idea of disruption and innovation over continuity - yet even the most powerful reformation movements drew on and exchanged ideas with earlier cultural and religious practices. This volume attempts to right the balance, bringing together a roster of experts to trace the continuities between the medieval and early modern period in the Nordic realm, while enabling us to see the Reformation and its changes in a new light.

Book The Art and Science of the Church Screen in Medieval Europe

Download or read book The Art and Science of the Church Screen in Medieval Europe written by Spike Bucklow and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2017 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fresh examinations of one of the most important church furnishings of the middle ages. The churches of medieval Europe contained richly carved and painted screens, placed between the altar and the congregation; they survive in particularly high numbers in England, despite being partly dismantled during the Reformation. While these screens divided "lay" from "priestly" jurisdiction, it has also been argued that they served to unify architectural space. This volume brings together the latest scholarship on the subject, exploring in detail numerous aspects of the construction and painting of screens, it aims in particular to unite perspectives from science and art history. Examples are drawn from a wide geographical range, from Scandinavia to Italy. Spike Bucklow is Director of Research at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge; Richard Marks is Emeritus Professor of the History of Art at the University of York and currently a member of the History of Art Department, University of Cambridge; Lucy Wrapson is Assistant to the Director at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge. Contributors: Paul Binski, Spike Bucklow, Donal Cooper, David Griffith, Hugh Harrison, JacquelineJung, Justin Kroesen, Julian Luxford, Richard Marks, Ebbe Nyborg, Eddie Sinclair, Jeffrey West, Lucy Wrapson.

Book Carolingian and Romanesque Architecture 800 to 1200

Download or read book Carolingian and Romanesque Architecture 800 to 1200 written by Kenneth John Conant and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Conant's detailed studies of Santiago de Compostela and of the abbey church at Cluny fit him for this account of building in the period of the round arch which preceeded Gothic. In this volume he shows how, at the instigation of the monasteries during the little renaissance of Charlemagne, Roman methods of construction were revived and fused with local traditions to produce a distinctive Carolingian manner; and how such monuments as the Palatine Chapel at Aachen already contained hints of the nobler and more mature Romanesque style which was to become international. professor Conant extends his survey to cover the regions of medieval France, Spain, Portugal, the Holy Land, Italy, Germany, Northern Europe, and Britain.
