Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans remain deeply ambivalent about teenage sexuality. Many presume that such uneasiness is rooted in religion. But how exactly does religion contribute to the formation of teenagers' sexual values and actions? What difference, if any, does religion make in adolescents' sexual attitudes and behaviors? Are abstinence pledges effective? What does it mean to be "emotionally ready" for sex? Who expresses regrets about their sexual activity and why? Tackling these and other questions, Forbidden Fruit tells the definitive story of the sexual values and practices of American teenagers, paying particular attention to how participating in organized religion shapes sexual decision-making. Merging analyses of three national surveys with stories drawn from interviews with over 250 teenagers across America, Mark Regnerus reviews how young people learn-and what they know-about sex from their parents, schools, peers and other sources. He examines what experiences teens profess to have had, and how they make sense of these experiences in light of their own identities as religious, moral, and responsible persons. Religion can and does matter, Regnerus finds, but religious claims are often swamped by other compelling sexual scripts. Particularly interesting is the emergence of what Regnerus calls a new middle class sexual morality which has little to do with a desire for virginity but nevertheless shuns intercourse in order to avoid risks associated with pregnancy and STDs. And strikingly, evangelical teens aren't less sexually active than their non-evangelical counterparts, they just tend to feel guiltier about it. In fact, Regnerus finds that few religious teens have internalized or are even able to articulate the sexual ethic taught by their denominations. The only-and largely ineffective-sexual message most religious teens are getting is, "Don't do it until you're married." Ultimately, Regnerus concludes, religion may influence adolescent sexual behavior, but it rarely motivates sexual decision making.

Book The Relationship Between Religiosity and Responsible Sexual Behavior Among Sexually Active Adolescents and Young Adults

Download or read book The Relationship Between Religiosity and Responsible Sexual Behavior Among Sexually Active Adolescents and Young Adults written by Laurencia Shornetta Hutton and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexuality is an integral part of human life and the desire to express sexuality continues throughout life, therefore it is important to establish healthy sexual practices early in the life course. Religiosity has been shown to delay sexual intercourse; however the research is not consistent on the relationship between religiosity and responsible sexual behavior after sexual intercourse has been initiated. The purpose of this study to examine the concurrent and longitudinal relationship between religiosity and responsible sexual behavior among sexually active adolescents and young adults. This study is a secondary analysis of the public-use data from Wave I and Wave III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). The sample includes 801 unmarried, sexually active respondents who participated in both Wave I and Wave III, and who were at least years old in Wave I. Religiosity is measured using three independent single measures-religious affiliation, frequency of attendance, and salience. Other covariates include demographic factors and sexual psychosocial factors. In adolescence, responsible sexual behavior is measured as contraceptive use at last sex. In young adulthood, responsible sexual behavior is measured as contraceptive use at last sex, frequency of birth control use, frequency of condom use and number of partners in the past year. It was hypothesized that adolescents and young adults who were more religious would be more likely to demonstrate responsible sexual behavior. It was also hypothesized that adolescents who are more religious would be more likely demonstrate responsible sexual behavior as young adults. The results of the multivariate logistic regression analysis do not support the stated hypotheses regarding the relationship between religiosity and responsible sexual behavior in adolescence or young adulthood. It seems as though sexual psychosocial factors and demographic factors may be better predictors of responsible sexual behavior. Due to the relatively high religiosity of the sample, the results suggest the unique opportunity faith based organizations have to partner with public health practitioners in the development of programs designed to address and improve adolescent and young adult sexual health.-- Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In innumerable discussions and activities dedicated to better understanding and helping teenagers, one aspect of teenage life is curiously overlooked. Very few such efforts pay serious attention to the role of religion and spirituality in the lives of American adolescents. But many teenagers are very involved in religion. Surveys reveal that 35% attend religious services weekly and another 15% attend at least monthly. 60% say that religious faith is important in their lives. 40% report that they pray daily. 25% say that they have been "born again." Teenagers feel good about the congregations they belong to. Some say that faith provides them with guidance and resources for knowing how to live well. What is going on in the religious and spiritual lives of American teenagers? What do they actually believe? What religious practices do they engage in? Do they expect to remain loyal to the faith of their parents? Or are they abandoning traditional religious institutions in search of a new, more authentic "spirituality"? This book attempts to answer these and related questions as definitively as possible. It reports the findings of The National Study of Youth and Religion, the largest and most detailed such study ever undertaken. The NYSR conducted a nationwide telephone survey of teens and significant caregivers, as well as nearly 300 in-depth face-to-face interviews with a sample of the population that was surveyed. The results show that religion and spirituality are indeed very significant in the lives of many American teenagers. Among many other discoveries, they find that teenagers are far more influenced by the religious beliefs and practices of their parents and caregivers than commonly thought. They refute the conventional wisdom that teens are "spiritual but not religious." And they confirm that greater religiosity is significantly associated with more positive adolescent life outcomes. This eagerly-awaited volume not only provides an unprecedented understanding of adolescent religion and spirituality but, because teenagers serve as bellwethers for possible future trends, it affords an important and distinctive window through which to observe and assess the current state and future direction of American religion as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adding to the contributions made by Soul Searching and Souls in Transition--two books which revolutionized our understanding of the religious lives of young Americans--Lisa Pearce and Melinda Lundquist Denton here offer a new portrait of teenage faith. Drawing on the massive National Study of Youth and Religion's telephone surveys and in-depth interviews with more than 120 youth at two points in time, the authors chart the spiritual trajectory of American adolescents and young adults over a period of three years. Turning conventional wisdom on its head, the authors find that religion is an important force in the lives of most--though their involvement with religion changes over time, just as teenagers themselves do. Pearce and Denton weave in fascinating portraits of actual youth to give depth to mere numerical rankings of religiosity, which tend to prevail in large studies. One teenager might rarely attend a service, yet count herself profoundly religious; another might be deeply involved in a church's social world, yet claim to be "not, like, deep into the faith." They provide a new set of qualitative categories--Abiders, Assenters, Adapters, Avoiders, and Atheists--quoting from interviews to illuminate the shading between them. And, with their three-year study, they offer a rich understanding of the dynamic nature of faith in young people's lives during a period of rapid change in biology, personality, and social interaction. Not only do degrees of religiosity change, but so does its nature, whether expressed in institutional practices or personal belief. By presenting a new model of religious development and change, illustrated with compelling personal accounts of real teenagers, Pearce and Denton offer parents, scholars, and religious leaders a new guide for understanding religious development in teens.

Book How Religion And or Spirituality Can Prevent Adolescents from Engaging in Risky Behaviors

Download or read book How Religion And or Spirituality Can Prevent Adolescents from Engaging in Risky Behaviors written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During adolescence various changes are occurring to help the adolescent develop an identity. Usually, these changes allows for the adolescent to explore and establish an identity, also known as identity achievement (Kroger & Marcia, 2011). In addition, they are also experiencing dopaminergic changes leading to an increase in sensation seeking, as well as forming their prefrontal cortex (Steingberg, 2008 and Romer, 2010). Overall, these changes can make adolescents susceptible to risk-taking behaviors. Religion and spirituality provide the adolescent with different ways to connect with the sacred and help them discover their sense of meaning in the world (Hill et al., 2000 and Benson & Roehlkepartian, 2008). Overall, positively affecting the well-being of an adolescent. Thus, the purpose of this systematic literature review is to investigate how religion and/or spirituality can prevent adolescents from engaging in risky behaviors, specifically delinquency, substance use, suicide, and sexual risky behaviors. This systematic literature review consisted of 22 studies that focused on how religion and/or spirituality can prevent adolescents from engaging in risky behaviors. In conclusion, the literature review found that the level of importance of religion to the adolescent, attending religious services, and religious activities (e.g. youth groups) decreased the effect of engaging in risky behaviors (Adamczyk, 2012; Chu, 2007; Fletcher & Kumar, 2014; Desmond, Kikuchi, & Budd, 2010; Desmond, Ulmer, & Bader, 2013; Longest & Vaisey, 2008; Salas-Wright, Vaughn, Hodge, & Perron, 2012; Sinha, Cnann & Gelles, 2007; Ulmer, Desmond, Jang & Johnson, 2012). Other factors of significance were found to be the perceived importance of spiritual believes, spiritual and existential well-being, attending spiritual events, and having spiritual experiences (e.g. meditation or prayer) (Cotton, Larkin, Hoopes, Cromer, & Rosenthal, 2005; Sussman et a., 2005).

Book Not by Faith Alone

Download or read book Not by Faith Alone written by Roger J.R. Levesque and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2002-12-11 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teens are often seen as challenging social mores. They are frequently perceived to engage in activities considered by adults to be immoral, including sexual behavior, delinquent activities, and low-level forms of violence. Yet the vast majority report surprisingly high levels of religiosity. Ninety-five percent of American teens aged 13-17 believe in God or a universal spirit, and 76% believe that God observes their actions and rewards or punishes them. Nearly half engage in religious practices, such as praying alone or attending church or synagogue services. Adolescents' religious beliefs are clearly important to them. Yet, the law does not know how to approach adolescents' religious rights and needs. In Not by Faith Alone, Roger J. R. Levesque argues that teens' search for meaning does not always serve adolescents or society well. Religious doctrines and institutions are not all "good," with violence linked to religious beliefs, for example—particularly racial/ethnic and sexual orientation harassment—becoming an increasing concern. Not by Faith Alone is the first attempt to integrate research on the place of religion in adolescent development and to discuss the relevance of that research for policies and laws which regulate religion in their lives. Levesque asks how religion, broadly defined, influences the development of teens' inner moral compasses, and how we can ensure that religion and the apparent need for "religious" activity lead to positive outcomes for individual adolescents and for society.

Book excerpt: What is the future of religion given the responses of young people? What impact do existing religious forms have on youth? What kind of spirituality and religion are young people creating for themselves? Religion and Youth presents an accessible guide to the key issues in the study of youth and religion, including methodological perspectives. It provides a key teaching text in these areas for undergraduates, and a book of rigorous scholarship for postgraduates, academics and practitioners. Offering the first comprehensive international perspective on the sociology of youth and religion, this book reveals key geographical and organisational variables as well as the complexities of the engagement between youth and religion. The book is divided into six parts organised around central themes: Generation X and their legacy; The Big Picture - surveys of belief and practice in the USA, UK and Australia; Expression - how young people construct and live out their religion and spirituality; Identity - the role of religion in shaping young people's sense of self and social belonging; Transmission - passing on the faith (or not); Researching Youth Religion - debates, issues and techniques in researching young people's religion and spirituality. James A. Beckford writes the Foreword and Linda Woodhead the Epilogue.
