Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religions of Mission Fields as Viewed by Protestant Missionaries This text-book has been prepared to supplement two others upon non-Christian religions previously used in the classes of the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions. One of these, written by Principal Grant, is descriptive in character; the other, by the late Dr. Kellogg of India, is comparative in its treatment of the ethnic faiths. As will be seen, most of the writers in the present volume have kept constantly in view the needs of that large body of students who are either planning to enter foreign missionary service, or who wish to look through the eyes of experienced workers upon the religions of the various mission fields. Practical points have more value for such persons than theoretical views, and the writers from their long and familiar acquaintance with believers in the religions which they discuss have aimed to minister to their desires. Every text-book of the series, of which this is the thirty-first, labors under the limitations of space, being intended for voluntary study by very busy students; and the present book must be regarded only as introductory to a much wider study of other volumes treating of these religions individually. Study classes are advised to make liberal use of such additional literature, both in order to supplement a necessarily fragmentary treatment of the various religions, and also that the class sessions may furnish fresh facts in amplification of those which the text-book supplies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Missionary Band: A Record and an Appeal The following pages need but little by way of preface. They form a record, fuller and more consecutive than has yet appeared, concerning the missionary band of seven who last year left England for missionary work in China. A recent writer has truly said: - "When, a few months ago, five Cambridge graduates, including the stroke of the Cambridge Eight, and one of the most famous cricketers of the day, with two officers (one of the Royal Artillery, and one of the Dragoon Guards), gave themselves thankfully to the work of the China Inland Mission, the heart of the country, and of the Churches, was deeply stirred, and we began to understand how much more noble a sphere of service was offered by Christ to young men with great possessions and good abilities, than the cricket-field or the river, the army or the bar could afford." This testimony is true, and, throughout the world, wherever the English language is spoken, much interest was awakened. The event was regarded as unique in the history of Missions, and the extraordinary demand for such particulars as have from time to time been published, has led to the preparation of this fuller account, which, it is believed, will be eagerly welcomed by many in all parts of the world. But let no one mistake the object of its publication - that object is not to extol the beloved brethren of whom it speaks, as though they had done some work of supererogation. The service of Christ in the foreign mission field confers a far higher honour on the man who devotes himself to it, than the man, be he who he may, can confer upon the work. Our brethren know this full well, and inspired by true loyalty to Christ, and an enlightened regard to the interests of His cause on earth, they have counted it their high privilege to give themselves to missionary work in a distant land; and we believe that the days are not distant when hundreds and thousands of young men of equal position and fitness will do as they have done. Towards the hastening of this time their example is of unspeakable value, and cannot be too widely known, with all of detail that may render it influential. No one, it is hoped, will lose sight of the fact that the chief qualification for missionary work is something immeasurably higher than anything social position or University training can give, and it is the possession of this qualification which affords such deep satisfaction concerning these brethren. Considering all the circumstances, the young men of this generation have had no more impressive testimony to the blessedness of decision for Christ, and the joy of a whole-hearted surrender to His service, than that given by this Missionary Band. That testimony may, through these pages, reach the heart of many a young man, and be to him memorable for ever as the means whereby he was led to decide for Christ, and to know by happy experience the joy of His salvation; while others, who are already the Lords, may, as they read, be enabled to say with a depth of feeling unknown before, and never again to be forgotten - "Take my life, and let it be Consecrated, Lord, to Thee." The interest awakened by their departure for the mission field still lives, and many eyes are upon their course. Dr. Wilder, of Princeton, the able editor of The Missionary Review, has put into words a thought, which, though it may have been unexpressed, has, doubtless, been in the minds of many; he says: - Thoughtful minds will be waiting to see how the glow of their piety endures the tug and toil of learning the Chinese language, and their close contact daily with the masses of ignorant and superstitious idolaters with no bracing influences around them from cultured Christian society. In the case of every young missionary there is more ground for such concern than minds not thoughtful can understand. The sudden transition from helpful surroundings at.

Download or read book The History of Protestant Missions in India written by Matthew Atmore Sherring and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Protestant Missions in India: From Their Commencement in 1706 to 1871 Among the beneficent influences at work in India, not the least potent and pervasive is Christianity. The aim of this work is to show historically what Pro testant Missions have accomplished in India since their commencement in the beginning of the last cen tury. In pursuance of this object, I have collected together all the important events of these Missions, and have presented them in a succinct and consecutive narrative, thus striving to give a complete view, as in a panorama, of their Operations and achievements. Notwithstanding the numerous reports which have been for many years issued by missionaries concerning their respective fields of labour, it has hitherto been wellnigh impossible to gain an adequate and distinct conception of the wonderful work which has been accomplished in the evangelisation of the people of India. While leaving matters of unnecessary detail, I have endeavoured to furnish an outline of the various methods, plans, and projects which have been pursued in the formation and growth of the Indian Protestant Church, sufficiently minute to be correct, and yet so compacted together and interwoven as to suffer neither in unity nor comprehensiveness. My desire, in short, has been to show how the wave of Christianity, commencing in one corner of the land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Call of the South: A Presentation of the Home Principle in Missions, Especially as It Applies to the South; Arranged to Meet the Needs of Mission Study Classes and Also of the General Reader This is an effort to present the appeal of homeland mis sions from the angle of underlying principles and motives. Only those specific fields of endeavor are considered that seem best to show the magnitude of the home principle in missions. The undertaking is to interpret the missionary needs of the South to itself. Rather than to others. Per haps the story will not therefore be less informing to others. The book is intended for Mission Study Classes and the general reader. It is also earnestly hoped that busy pastors will find in it that which shall stimulate their minds afresh. As they seek to arouse their churches to a sense of the moral grandeur and strategic significance of the work of bringing the people of the South both to know and to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Life and Labours of Francis Xavier Taken From His Own Correspondence: With a Sketch of the General Results Roman Catholic Missions Among the Heathen The history of modern Roman Catholic Missions to heat en countries forms an important subject of inquiry with all who take an interest in the progress of Christianity. One of the most remarkable periods in this history is that which extends from the middle of the sixteenth to the middle of the seventeenth centuries. It was then that Jesuit Missionaries and some of the ablest men appeared in the field. The great influence and wealth of Portugal were at that time exerted to give effect to the work of evangelizing India, Japan, China, and America. It is difficult to calculate the number of Missionaries which the Church of Rome maintained during that period in all parts of the known world. Long after the work had declined, by the expulsion of the Portuguese from their Eastern supremacy, Niecamp, who wrote a History of the Danish Mission in South India, states, that when the first two Protestant Missionaries were sent out (in 1706), the number of Romish Missionaries then in the East was estimated at two thousand. Yet our information of Roman Catholic Missions is very meagre and unsatisfactory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The immediate origins of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions are well known. In the midst of the Second Great Awakening and a growing Trinitarian-Unitarian controversy, a small group of college students met in 1806 to discuss the spiritual condition of the Asian nations. A storm arose and they took shelter in a haystack. From this “Haystack Prayer Meeting” came the resolve to take the Gospel to those who had not heard. The Field Is the World tells the story of the students’ petition to the General Association of Congregational Ministers of Massachusetts to seek ways to respond to Christ’s call to preach the gospel to every creature. The resulting Board of Commissioners became the first evangelical mission organization to transcend denominational affiliations in the U.S. and to represent the epitome of the missionary enterprise at large. Donald Philip Corr has presented one of a limited number of scholarly works on the Board’s ministry beyond the U.S., particularly its pioneering efforts on the role of preaching and social work and the theme of indigenization among unreached peoples.

Book A History of Protestant Missions in the Near East

Download or read book A History of Protestant Missions in the Near East written by Julius Richter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Protestant Missions in the Near East To the Boards of the great Congregational and Presbyterian Churches of America I dedicate this volume with an expression of the deep gratitude which Protestant Christendom owes to them for their comprehensive and thorough work in the Near East. They have worked during the nineteenth century quietly, with little recognition from outside, for the uplifting and spiritual vitalizing of the venerable remnants of the Oriental Churches. Now after the sudden changes of the last year, those missions stand out as the well founded corner-stones of great and promising mission churches, as the pillars of hope in the midst of the turmoil of the Near East. I have had the privilege during the last month to be for the first time in the United States, at the fountainhead of those beneficent streams which are fertilizing the dry fields of the Levant. What I have experienced during this time has filled my heart with great hopes for the future of the missionary movement. When at the International Convention at Rochester I looked into the bright faces of about four thousand students, kindled with enthusiasm for missions, I realized that the central question of the labourers in the great harvest here finds an ideal solution. When I came in close touch with The Laymen's Missionary Movement, I ventured to hope that by reclaiming the wealth of the Union for the service of the Kingdom that other perplexing problem, the money question, would be dealt with satisfactorily. And when in constant intercourse with the leaders interested in missionary movements I saw of what high type these men really are, my confidence increased that the leadership, too, is in good hands and that by such men God has a great work waiting for America. Book The Church in America

Download or read book The Church in America written by William Adams Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in America: A Study of the Present Condition and Future Prospects, of American Protestantism This book expresses certain convictions concerning the opportunity and duty of the American Protestant churches which sum up the experience and reflection of many years. The immediate occasion for the book was furnished by my experience as Secretary of the General War-Time Commission of the Churches and Chairman of the Committee on the War and the Religious Outlook. The former was the organization through which the different Protestant denominations co-operated during the war. In this commission no less than thirty-nine different bodies were represented, including communions as different as the Episcopalians and the Southern Baptists. As secretary of this Commission I was not only brought into intimate association with many leaders of the larger Protestant communions as well as with representative Roman Catholics and Jews, but was obliged for the first time to make a comprehensive survey of the tasks and problems which confront the Church as a whole. The need which the war disclosed of a thoroughgoing co-operative study of these tasks and problems led to the organization, in 1918, of the Committee on the War and the Religious Outlook. This is a group of men and women, some thirty in number, who have spent the last four years in a co-operative study of such fundamental subjects as the relation of the Church to industry, the missionary outlook in the light of the war, the teaching work of the Church, and the problems and possibilities of Christian unity. One of the motives which has led me to undertake this book has been the desire to bring the work of this committee to the attention of a wider public, and to enlist thoughtful Christians of all the churches in the kind of inquiry it seeks to promote. But my interest in the subject to be discussed is of older date. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
