Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This enlightening analysis of the image of a cruel God sustained by conservative Christianity reveals how this image formed, the psychological effects of this concept, and the ways in which it has guided religious individuals—in both positive and negative ways. This book is born, in large measure, as a result of a writing by contemporary theologian J. Harold Ellens. In his essay "Religious Metaphors Can Kill" from Praeger's The Destructive Power of Religion, Ellens espouses that theological doctrines are rooted in a model of God that determines all the aspects of those doctrines, and strongly influences the cultures into which it is inserted. Conservative Christianity in the Western world, says Ellens, has at its center the image of a cruel and wrathful God. The juridical atonement theory of Anselm is a result of such an image of God, and has an important role in justifying the resort to violence in human interaction. Starting from these considerations, Cruel God, Kind God: How Images of God Shape Belief, Attitude, and Outlook analyzes three general topics: how two very different kinds of Christianities have emerged from these disparate images of God; how the doctrines of "original sin," "the plan of salvation," and "penal substitution" can be explained by psychological factors, as can the wide dissemination and acceptance of these doctrines; and how the image of a cruel God affects mental health, atrophies personality, and produces guilt and shame.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four Australian thinkers come together to ask and answer the big questions, such as: What is the nature of the universe? Doesn't religion cause most of the conflict in the world? and Where do we find hope? We are introduced to the detail of different belief systems - Judaism, Christianity, Islam - and to the argument that atheism, like organised religion, has its own compelling logic. And we gain insight into the life events that led each author to their current position. Jane Caro flirted briefly with spiritual belief, inspired by 19th century literary heroines such as Elizabeth Gaskell and the Brontë sisters. Antony Lowenstein is proudly culturally, yet unconventionally, Jewish. Simon Smart is firmly and resolutely a Christian, but one who has had some of his most profound spiritual moments while surfing. Rachel Woodlock grew up in the alternative embrace of Baha'i belief but became entranced by its older parent religion, Islam. Provocative, informative and passionately argued, For God's Sake encourages us to accept religious differences but to also challenge more vigorously the beliefs that create discord.

Book Ceasefire Religions and the Way to God Controversy

Download or read book Ceasefire Religions and the Way to God Controversy written by Amelikeh C. E. N. and published by Partridge Africa. This book was released on 2015-02-23 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been much speculation and interreligious debates with regards to the number of possible ways that may lead a person to God and what the ways are. Most of the debates have been between Christians and Muslims, and between those people who think there is possibly more than one way to God, and those people who think that only one way is possible by which a human being may get to God, the creator for eternal life. How many ways are truly there to God, one or many? Any of these answers are easy to give but are different depending on ones school of thought or religious affiliation. The truth, or at least the honest evidence, is the only solution to the whole controversy so that peace may prevail for unity to be possible on the issue of the way to God. In this book, the honest evidence of truth of the number and identity of the possible ways to God is discovered by treading the path of neutrality for truth. It is high time we settled the controversy among the religions concerning the way to God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can psychology explain religious behavior? This book explores the thinking of eight pioneers of religious psychology, including Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. Fuller presents the theories of these seminal figures in a clear, straightforward way, and also examines the limits of psychological explanations of religion. He concludes the book by exploring the contributions to religion by some prominent recent figures in psychology such as Ana-Maria Rizzuto, Paul W. Pruyser, and Bernard Spilka. Praise for the latest edition of Psychology and Religion: "Professor Fuller has made a valuable contribution to students of psychology and religion. He has brought together in a single volume eight of the most important thinkers in their field. By presenting the views of these seminal figures in a cogent, straightforward manner and with scholarly faithfulness to their ideas, Fuller has eased the task of exploring an extremely challenging area. He is to be commended for his impressive effort." -Steven M. Rosen, The College of Staten Island

Download or read book Psychology and Religion written by Andrew R. Fuller and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2007-11-27 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book articulates a broad range of theoretical viewpoints, both classical and contemporary, in the field of the psychology of religion. Chapters One through Eight are overviews of such 'classical' theorists as William James, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Gordon Allport, Abraham Maslow, Alan Watts, Erich Fromm, and Viktor Frankl. Chapters Nine through Twelve consider subsequent developments in the field, e.g., the views of object relations theorists on the God-image; empirical research on the scaling of religiousness; and modern consciousness research. Chapters Ten through Twelve are new to this edition and comprise an eclectic overview of the feminist psychology of religion, recent developments in the intersection of neuroscience and religion, and the evolutionary psychology of religion. Both wide-ranging and current, therefore, this book offers illuminating and in-depth coverage of major theorists and approaches. While its breadth makes it an excellent place to begin an exploration of the psychology of religion, its depth and detail provide the opportunity for a serious and rewarding immersion in the field.
