Download or read book Abandoned to Lust written by Jennifer Wright Knust and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Christians used charges of adultery, incest, and lascivious behavior to demonize their opponents, police insiders, resist pagan rulers, and define what it meant to be a Christian. Christians frequently claimed that they, and they alone were sexually virtuous, comparing themselves to those marked as outsiders, especially non-believers and "heretics," who were said to be controlled by lust and unable to rein in their carnal desires. True or not, these charges allowed Christians to present themselves as different from and morally superior to those around them. Through careful, innovative readings, Jennifer Knust explores the writings of Paul, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus of Lyons, and other early Christian authors who argued that Christ alone made self-mastery possible. Rejection of Christ led to both immoral sexual behavior and, ultimately, alienation and punishment from God. Knust considers how Christian writers participated in a long tradition of rhetorical invective, a rhetoric that was often employed to defend status and difference. Christians borrowed, deployed, and reconfigured classical rhetorical techniques, turning them against their rulers to undercut their moral and political authority. Knust also examines the use of accusations of licentiousness in conflicts between rival groups of Christians. Portraying rival sects as depraved allowed accusers to claim their own group as representative of "true Christianity." Knust's book also reveals the ways in which sexual slurs and their use in early Christian writings reflected cultural and gendered assumptions about what constituted purity, morality, and truth. In doing so, Abandoned to Lust highlights the complex interrelationships between sex, gender, and sexuality within the classical, biblical, and early-Christian traditions.

Book Addicted to Lust

  • Author : Samuel L. Perry
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2019-04-02
  • ISBN : 0190844221

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few cultural issues alarm conservative Protestant families and communities like the seemingly ubiquitous threat of pornography. Thanks to widespread access to the internet, conservative Protestants now face a reality in which every Christian man, woman, and child with a smartphone can access limitless pornography in their bathroom, at work, or at a friend's sleepover. Once confident of their victory over pornography in society at large, conservative Protestants now fear that "porn addiction" is consuming even the most faithful. How are they adjusting to this new reality? And what are its consequences in their lives? Drawing on over 130 interviews as well as numerous national surveys, Addicted to Lust shows that, compared to other Americans, pornography shapes the lives of conservative Protestants in ways that are uniquely damaging to their mental health, spiritual lives, and intimate relationships. Samuel L. Perry demonstrates how certain pervasive beliefs within the conservative Protestant subculture unwittingly create a context in which those who use pornography are often overwhelmed with shame and discouragement, sometimes to the point of depression or withdrawal from faith altogether. Conservative Protestant women who use pornography feel a "double shame" both for sinning sexually and for sinning "like a man," while conflicts over pornography in marriages are escalated by patterns of lying, hiding, blowing up, or threats of divorce. Addicted to Lust shines new light on one of the most talked-about problems facing conservative Christians.

Book excerpt: Pastor John Piper shows how to sever the clinging roots of sin that ensnare us, including anxiety, pride, shame, impatience, covetousness, bitterness, despondency, and lust in Battling Unbelief. When faith flickers, stoke the fire. No one sins out of duty. We sin because it offers some promise of happiness. That promise enslaves us, until we believe that God is more desirable than life itself (Psalm 63:3). Only the power of God’s superior promises in the gospel can emancipate our hearts from servitude to the shallow promises and fleeting pleasures of sin. Delighting in the bounty of God’s glorious gospel promises will free us for a less sin-encumbered life, to the glory of Christ. Rooted in solid biblical reflection, this book aims to help guide you through the battles to the joys of victory by the power of the gospel and its superior pleasure.

Book excerpt: In preparing The Psychical Correlation of Religious Emotion and Sexual Desire for its second edition, the author has incorporated in it a considerable amount of additional evidence in support of his theory. He has carefully verified all references; he has endeavored to eliminate all unnecessary material; and, finally, he has changed the style of the work by dividing it into three parts, thus greatly simplifying the text. He feels under many obligations to his critics, both to those who thought his little book worthy of commendation, and to those who deemed his premises and conclusions erroneous. He feels grateful to the former, because they have caused him to believe that he has added somewhat to the literature of science; he thanks the latter, because in pointing out that which they considered untrue, they have forced him to a new and more searching study of the questions involved, thereby strengthening his belief in the truthfulness of his conclusions. To the second edition of The Psychical Correlation of Religious Emotion and Sexual Desire, the author has seen fit to add certain other essays. In preparing these essays for publication, he has borrowed freely from his published papers, therefore, he desires to thank the publishers of the New York Medical Record, Century Magazine, Denver Medical Times, Charlotte Monthly and American Naturalist for granting him permission to use such of his published material (belonging to them) as he saw fit. The author asks the indulgence of the reader for certain repetitions in the text. These have not been occasioned by any lack of data, but occur simply because he believes that an argument is rendered stronger and more convincing by the frequent use of the same data whenever and wherever it is possible to use them. When this plan is followed, the reader, so the author believes, becomes familiar with the author's line of thought, and is, consequently, better able to comprehend and appreciate his meaning. Finally, the author has been led to the publication of these essays by a firm belief in the truthfulness of the propositions advanced therein. He may not live to see these propositions accepted, yet he believes that, in the future, perhaps, in worthier and more able hands, they will be so weightily and forcibly elaborated and advanced that their verity will be universally acknowledged.

Book excerpt: The story of Religion''s role - in sex, power and empire building. Why controlling a woman''s sexuality was commanded Why LGBT is condemned but BDS&M is ignored Why homophobia is about economics - not theology Why Jesus was needed to make people obedient Why faith was necessary to support rulers, kings and the powerful How religions were formed to control society and uphold the status quo Before religion was invented people had only a mild curiosity and inquisitiveness about spirituality - they wondered about nature, the stars, the meaning of life, but not obsessively - some mysticism here, a bit of superstition there, and then onto more important things. For 99.8% of human existence, people lived pretty much the same way: in small intimate groups, surviving as nomadic hunter-gatherers - free of inhibitions and with their own rules for sex and love. Sex was frequent and with multiple partners, paternity was uncertain. As a result, all children were treated by the men as if they were their own - to be equally protected, fed and loved. A few thousand years ago people started farming; the food supply became more reliable. Suddenly resources stopped belonging to everybody, and things started belonging to individuals. People invented the concept of private property: people invented wealth. Men became obsessed with keeping their "wealth" - they became determined to ensure that others did not come and take what was rightfully theirs. The obsession for private property had taken hold, and the farmer was horrified by the idea of an unworthy stranger taking his hard-earned property after he died. Men became obsessed with making sure that their children, and only their children, inherited their property - men had to make sure that only they impregnated "their" woman. - Women''s sexuality had to be strictly controlled. The new concepts were strange to early humans who had only recently been accustomed to sharing food and love - sexual intolerance, greed, cruelty and violence are not part of human nature. Something was needed to overcome people''s tolerant, peaceful, easy-going nature. And so the people that ruled invented religions to support their property-owning society. The Old Testament is fascinated on the point of property ownership; and obsessed with heredity, genealogy and lineage. - It never stops talking about who owns what land, and about who is whose father. Homosexuality is very rarely mentioned in the Bible. - The persecution of homosexuals did not start until the late Middle Ages. The reason for banning homosexuality was the constant wars over property, societies were in an "arms race" - they had to get larger and larger armies. The ranks needed constant replenishment: children were needed to make soldiers for "cannon fodder". Every sperm was sacred: it was decided that homosexuality must be discouraged - men should spend their energy on fathering sons - and not on idle, unproductive fun. The trouble was that the books of the Old Testament encouraged individualism - people were becoming too self-confident and argumentative. So Jesus was invented. His message was the philosophy of obedience, passivity and apathy in the face of suffering: "be meek", accept your place in society and obey your elders and rulers. "Suffer in silence and you will get your reward in the next world" - that was the new message of the Jesus story. And by creating a population of materialistic, property loving "lambs", the rulers of Western Europe were able to conquer and rule the world. - The Christian nations came to dominate and enslave all other societies and all other communities. This is why today, agnosticism, humanism and skeptics argue for a secular, atheist society
