Book The History of the Buddha s Relic Shrine

Download or read book The History of the Buddha s Relic Shrine written by Parākrama Paṇḍita and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhist chronicles have long been had a central place in the study of Buddhism. Scholars, however, have relied almost exclusively on Pali works that were composed by elites for learned audiences, to the neglect of a large number of Buddhist histories written in local languages for popular consumption. The Sinhala Thupavamsa, composed by Parakama Pandita in thirteenth-century Sri Lanka, is an important example of a Buddhist chronicle written in the vernacular Sinhala language. Furthermore, it is among those works that inform public discussion and debate over the place of Buddhism in the Sri Lankan nation state and the role of Buddhist monks in contemporary politics. In this book Stephen Berkwitz offers the first complete English translation of the Sinhala Thupavamsa. Composed in a literary dialect of Sinhala, it contains a richly descriptive account of how Buddhism spread outside of India, replete with poetic embellishments and interpolations not found in other accounts of those events. Aside from being an important literary work, the Sinhala Thupavamsa. is a text of considerable historical and religious significance. It comprises several narrative strands that relate the life story of the Buddha and the manner in which Buddhist teachings and institutions were established on the island of Sri Lanka in ancient times. The central focus of this work concerns the variety of relics associated with the historical Buddha, particularly how the relics were acquired and the presumed benefits of venerating them. The text also relates the mythological history of the Buddha's previous lives as a bodhisattva and concludes with a prediction about the future Buddha Maitreya. Reflection on Buddhist ethics and instruction on the Dharma, or the Buddha's teaching, are found throughout the work, indicating that this historical narrative was meant both to recall the past and give rise to religious practice among contemporary readers and listeners. This new translation makes a significant work more widely accessible in the West and adds to our knowledge of how local Buddhist communities imagined and represented their religious and cultural heritages in written works.

Download or read book The relic state written by Pamila Gupta and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the complex nature of colonial and missionary power in Portuguese India. Written as a historical ethnography, it explores the evolving shape of a series of Catholic festivals that took place throughout the duration of Portuguese colonial rule in Goa (1510–1961), and for which the centrepiece was the 'incorrupt' corpse of São Francisco Xavier (1506–52), a Spanish Basque Jesuit missionary-turned-saint. Using distinct genres of source materials produced over the long duree of Portuguese colonialism, the book documents the historical and visual transformation of Xavier’s corporeal ritualisation in death through six events staged at critical junctures between 1554 and 1961. Xavier’s very mutability as a religious, political and cultural symbol in Portuguese India will also suggest his continuing role as a symbol of Goa’s shared past (for both Catholics and Hindus) and in shaping Goa’s culturally distinct representation within the larger Indian nation-state.

Book The Relic Master

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Buckley
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2015-12-08

Download or read book The Relic Master written by Christopher Buckley and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Buckley’s “hilarious, bawdy, and irreverent frolic of a tale” about a sixteenth-century relic hunter and the artist Albrecht Dürer who conspire to fabricate Christ’s burial shroud reads “like Indiana Jones gone medieval” (USA TODAY). The year is 1517. Dismas is a relic hunter who procures “authentic” religious relics for wealthy and influential clients. His two most important patrons are Frederick the Wise and soon-to-be Cardinal Albrecht of Mainz. While Frederick is drawn to the recent writing of Martin Luther, Albrecht pursues the financial and political benefits of religion and seeks to buy a cardinalship through the selling of indulgences. When Albrecht’s demands for grander relics increase, Dismas and his artist friend Dürer fabricate a shroud to sell to the unsuspecting noble. Unfortunately Dürer’s reckless pride exposes the trickery, so Albrecht puts Dismas and Dürer in the custody of four mercenaries and sends them all to steal Christ’s burial cloth (the Shroud of Chambéry), Europe’s most celebrated artifact. On their journey to Savoy where the Shroud will be displayed, they battle a lustful count and are joined by a beautiful female apothecary. It is only when they reach their destination they realize they are not alone in their intentions to acquire a relic of dubious legitimacy. “A rollicking good time, Christopher Buckley has transported his signature wit and irreverence from the Beltway to sixteenth-century Europe in The Relic Master” (GQ). This epic quest, “as rascally and convivial as any that Mr. Buckley has written” (The Wall Street Journal), is filled with fascinating details about art, religion, politics, and science; Vatican intrigue; and Buckley’s signature wit “holds the reader till the very last page” (The New York Times Book Review).

Book The Lawyer s Relic and A Grandfather s Dilemma

Download or read book The Lawyer s Relic and A Grandfather s Dilemma written by Julian Bauer and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author of the acclaimed historical novel, The Scholar's Challenge, Julian Bauer now turns his unique writing abilities to two contemporary novellas, The Lawyer's Relic and A Grandfather's Dilemma. The first novella asks how an agnostic lawyer would react if he found a bloody napkin wrapped as a Christmas gift. Would he throw it away even if he found a card attached describing it as the burial face cloth of Jesus Christ? How would he react if supposedly miraculous events occurred? Would his legal skills play a factor in his search for an answer to what it all means? The second novella puts a elderly man in a predicament. He faces death from old age and has settled all his worldly affairs when a middle-aged woman and her adult son show up on his doorstep. She claims the young man is his grandson. Is he? Moreover, she tells the old man that her son has major character flaws needing someone of his ability to redeem him. He refuses to take on the responsibility. She insists. In any case, how could an unwilling young man be changed? Is it possible that age can bring with it weapons of unusual teaching abilities? Heartbreaking and enlightening, these powerful stories engage the reader in questions of faith and integrity. In writing these novellas, Julian utilizes all the investigative and managerial tools he gained in his career as CEO of his own company, executive in the Federal government, and national president of a nonprofit organization. He skillfully weaves two riveting tales around the benefits of trust and virtue.

Book excerpt: New York Times–bestselling author: This richly imagined urban fantasy novel set in London’s supernatural black market reads like a cross between Clive Barker and Anne Rice There’s an underground black market for arcane things. Akin to the trade in rhino horns or tigers’ bones, this network traffics in remains of gryphons, faeries, goblins, and other fantastic creatures. When her fiancé Vince goes missing Angela Gough, an American criminology student, discovers that he was a part of this secretive trade. It's a big-money business—shadowy, brutal, and sometimes fatal. As the trail leads her deeper into London's dark side, she crosses paths with a crime lord whose life is dedicated to collecting such relics. Then Angela discovers that some of these objects aren't as ancient as they seem. Some of them are fresh. Dripping with supernatural terror, Relics launches a new trilogy by the New York Times–bestselling author of Coldbrook, The Silence, and the Alien-Predator Rage War series.
