Book Reliant Sports Cars

Download or read book Reliant Sports Cars written by Don Pither and published by . This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reliant Scimitar is one of the most successful and distinctive British sports cars. In almost 20 years, from 1968 to 1986, over 15,000 of these elegant machines were produced, and today the car is still highly regarded for its timeless looks and effective design. Don Pither's pictorial history of the Scimitar and its predecessor, the Sabre, shows in detail their conception, development and career, and it celebrates their enduring qualities. This book is essential reading for Scimitar owners and enthusiasts, and provides a keen insight for readers who are fascinated by the history of British sports cars. The author recalls how, after 25 years of producing three-wheeled vehicles, Reliant experimented with the production of a four-wheeled sports car, the Sabre, in 1961. The company was so encouraged by the sales potential of this nimble Ford-engined two-seater, which they went on to produce the more ambitious Scimitar coupe of 1964. This innovative car, which carried a stylish Ogle-designed body, was developed into the most famous and most powerful Scimitar of all, the 3-litre GTE sporting estate of 1968. This car sold consistently well throughout the 1970s because of its good looks, practicality and rapid performance. It also gained for the company a valuable royal endorsement as Scimitars were owned by the Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Anne. The car was seen as a classic of its time.

Book excerpt: MOTOR CARS: GENERAL INTEREST. Spanning four decades, the Reliant Robin was a familiar, if eccentric, fixture on Britain's roads; an object of amusement to those who didn't understand its ultra-thrifty ways and a source of pride to the many thousands of owners who did. During a time of deep recession in 1970s Britain, this stylish little car from Tamworth became a massive hit, boasting low fuel consumption and cheap tax. Reliant couldn't make them fast enough, until a culture of more sophisticated car buyers saw it go into eventual decline. From its beginnings in 1973 to its demise almost thirty years later, Giles Chapman traces the colourful history of the most famous and iconic three-wheeled car in Britain.

Book Automobile Manufacturers Worldwide Registry

Download or read book Automobile Manufacturers Worldwide Registry written by and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-of-a-kind reference work provides essential data on some 10,700 manufacturers of automobiles, beginning with the earliest vehicle that might be so termed (Frenchman Nicolas Cugnot's steam carriage, in 1770) and covering all nations in which automobiles have been built--67 in all. Not an encyclopedia or collection of histories, this is instead a very complete registry providing essential facts about the manufacturers: complete name, location, years active, type(s) of vehicles built, and other basic data. Compiled during more than 30 years of research, this reference even lists companies that produced just one car. Any builder of passenger-carrying vehicles on at least two but no more than eight wheels, of any design, either mass produced or built as one-off specials, experimental cars, prototypes, or kit cars, is included. Builders of internal combustion, steam and electric powered vehicles are all covered; companies that built only trucks, buses, racing cars, or motorcycles are not included. From A.A.A. to Zzipper and Argentina to Yugoslavia, this is an astonishingly comprehensive resource.

Book After the Car

  • Author : Kingsley Dennis
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2013-05-20
  • ISBN : 0745658733
  • Pages : 169 pages

Download or read book After the Car written by Kingsley Dennis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is difficult to imagine a world without the car, and yet that is exactly what Dennis and Urry set out to do in this provocative new book. They argue that the days of the car are numbered: powerful forces around the world are undermining the car system and will usher in a new transport system sometime in the next few decades. Specifically, the book examines how several major processes are shaping the future of how we travel, including: Global warming and its many global consequences Peaking of oil supplies Increased digitisation of many aspects of economic and social life Massive global population increases The authors look at changes in technology, policy, economy and society, and make a convincing argument for a future where, by necessity, the present car system will be re-designed and re-engineered. Yet the book also suggests that there are some hugely bleak dilemmas facing the twenty first century. The authors lay out what they consider to be possible 'post-car' future scenarios. These they describe as 'local sustainability', 'regional warlordism' and 'digital networks of control'. After The Car will be of great interest to planners, policy makers, social scientists, futurologists, those working in industry, as well as general readers. Some have described the 20th Century as the century of the car. Now that century has come to a close – and things are about to change.
