This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are predicted to play a key role in future technological developments like the internet of things. Already they are beginning to be used in many applications not only in the scientific and industrial domains. One of the biggest challenges, when using WSN, is to fuse and evaluate data from different sensor nodes. Synchronizing the data acquisition of the nodes is a key enabling factor for this. So far research has been focused on synchronizing the clocks of the nodes, largely neglecting the implications for the actual measurement results. This thesis investigates the relation between synchronization accuracy and quality of measurement results. Two different classes of time synchronous data acquisition are investigated: event detection and waveform sampling. A model is developed that describes a WSN as a generic multi-channel data acquisition system, thus enabling direct comparison to other existing systems. With the help of this model it is shown, that synchronization accuracy should best be expressed as uncertainty of the acquired timing information. This way, not only the contribution of the synchronization to the overall measurement uncertainty can be assessed, but also the synchronization accuracy required for an application can be estimated. The insights from the uncertainty analysis are used to develop two distinct approaches to synchronous data acquisition: a proactive and a reactive one. It is shown that the reactive approach can also be used to efficiently implement synchronous angular sampling, i.e. data acquisition synchronous to the rotation of a machine's shaft. Furthermore, testing methods are suggested, that evaluate the synchronized data acquisition of an existing WSN as a whole. These methods can be applied to other data acquisition systems without changes, thus enabling direct comparisons. The practical realization of a WSN is described, on which the developed data acquisition methods have been implemented. All implementations were thoroughly tested in experiments, using the suggested testing methods. This way it was revealed, that a system's interrupt handling procedures may have a strong influence on the data acquisition. Furthermore, it was shown that the effective use of fixed-point arithmetic enables synchronous angular sampling in real-time during a streaming measurement. Finally, two application examples are used to illustrate the utility of the implemented data acquisition: the acoustic localization of two sensor nodes on a straight line and a simple order tracking at an induction motor test bench.

Book Data Acquisition Techniques for Next Generation Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Data Acquisition Techniques for Next Generation Wireless Sensor Networks written by Samina Ehsan and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meteoric rise and prevalent usage of wireless networking technologies for mobile communication applications have captured the attention of media and imagination of public in the recent decade. One such proliferation is experienced in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), where multimedia enabled elements are fused with integrated sensors to empower tightly coupled interaction with the physical world. As a promising alternative to antiquated wired systems and traditional WSNs in a multitude of novel application scenarios, the newly renovated WSNs have inspired a wide range of research among which investigation on data acquisition techniques is a fundamental one. In this dissertation, we address the problem of data acquisition in next generation WSNs. As wireless sensors are powered with limited energy resources while they are expected to work in an unattended manner for a long duration, energy conservation stands as the primal concern. Also, to enable in-situ sensing in different rate-constrained applications, routing decisions should care about the medium access feasibility of achievable end-to-end data rates. Driven by the fact, we first design cross-layer medium contention aware routing schemes for rate-constrained traffic in single-channel WSNs that maximize network lifetime. Three sufficient conditions on rate feasibility, referred to as rate-based, degree-based, and mixed constraints, are incorporated into the routing formulations to guarantee the practical viability of the routing solutions. Next, with the aim to mitigate interference and hence to enhance network capacity, we extend our work by proposing energy and cross-layer aware routing schemes for multichannel access WSNs that account for radio, MAC contention, and network constraints. In that context, we first derive three new sets of sufficient conditions that ensure feasibility of data rates in multichannel access WSNs. Then, utilizing these sets, we devise three different MAC-aware routing optimization schemes, each aiming to maximize the network lifetime while meeting data rate requirements of end-to-end flows. Finally, we perform extensive simulation studies to evaluate and compare the performance of the proposed routing approaches under various network conditions. So far works are done in milieu of WSNs with both fixed access node and sensor nodes. In the subsequent part of the dissertation, we present the continuation of our work focusing on reliable data acquisition in Mobile WSNs for a promising application namely free-ranging animal tracking/monitoring. To accomplish that goal, we concentrate on providing sufficient conditions on access-point density that limit the likelihood of buffer overflow. We first derive sufficient access-point density conditions that ensure that the data loss rates are statistically guaranteed to remain below a given threshold. Then, we evaluate and validate the derived theoretical results with both synthetic and real-world data.

Book Reliable and Efficient Routing for Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Reliable and Efficient Routing for Wireless Sensor Networks written by Saket Sinha and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The latest advances in technology have facilitated the emergence of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) as a promising technology. Because of their wide range of applications in industry, environmental monitoring, military and civilian domains, WSNs have become one of the most popular topics for research and development. The sensor nodes are low in cost and are simple in architecture. Wireless sensor networks are being employed in security-critical applications. However, their inherent characteristics make them prone to various security outbreaks that can negatively affect data collection. The current project presents an active detection-based routing scheme for WSNs, which can quickly create numerous detection routes as well as obtain nodal trust and thereby improve data security. Simulation results show that this scheme can detect Black Hole attacks, protect against them, and conserve energy, thus improving the network lifetime.

Book Reliability of Data Collection and Transmission in Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Reliability of Data Collection and Transmission in Wireless Sensor Networks written by Basheer Al-Qassab and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A network of wireless sensor nodes that are connected to a centralized base station is presented to conduct a study on reliability of data collection and transmission in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with focus on data loss and data duplication. Software applications for specific sensor nodes called Sun SPOTs are presented, and programming techniques, for example packet transmitting time delay and data checking for loss and duplication, are implemented in these software applications to improve the functionality of the network. Acceleration data on a vibration plate are collected at sampling frequency of 100 Hz to validate the operation of the network. Additionally, the wireless sensor network is optimized to enhance the synchronization of data collection from different nodes. The result of this research shows that the reliability of the network is related to data sampling frequency, synchronization of the wireless data traffic, wireless sensor node signal strength, and wireless data routing protocols. The indoor tests on signal strength show the limitation of -70 dBm and higher for optimum data collection without data or packet loss.

Book Reliable and Energy efficient Data Collection in Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Reliable and Energy efficient Data Collection in Wireless Sensor Networks written by Feng Wang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted significant attentions from both academia and industry, and are widely proposed for a broad range of applications, where data collection is often a core service to facilitate sensed data being forwarded to a central base station for further processing. Powered by batteries and using wireless communications, a WSN is more flexible than its wired counterpart. However, wireless losses/collisions may be prevalent when nodes communicate with each other. Moreover, the lifetime of a WSN largely depends on that of individual nodes, which is further constrained by the generally non-replenishable batteries. Energy-efficiency thus becomes a critical concern that must be addressed. In practice, using WSNs for data collection can be broken into three major stages, namely, deployment, message dissemination and data delivery. The deployment stage focuses on best deploying the network in the sensing field. In the message dissemination stage, network setup/management and/or collection command messages are disseminated from the base station to all sensor nodes, where the challenges lie in how to disseminate messages with low transmission costs and latencies in the presence of error-prone wireless communications. The data delivery stage fulfills the main task of data collection. Based on the information indicated by the message dissemination stage, sensed data are gathered at different nodes and delivered to the base station, with application-specified Quality-of-Service requirements to be fulfilled. In this thesis, we tackle the design issues for each of these stages. For the deployment stage, we propose to use relay nodes for traffic relaying and suggest that the deployment should be aware of the data traffic to be collected by specific applications. We then discuss how to efficiently disseminate message in a low duty-cycle scenario, where nodes alternate between active and dormant states to conserve energy and thus extend the network lifetime. To address the traffic accumulation problem, particularly in the data delivery stage, we take a case study on high-rise structure monitoring application and propose to use elevators to facilitate data collection. Our analysis and experimental results offer systematic solutions toward reliable and energy-efficient data collection by WSNs.

Book Smart Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Smart Wireless Sensor Networks written by Yen Kheng Tan and published by IntechOpen. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent development of communication and sensor technology results in the growth of a new attractive and challenging area - wireless sensor networks (WSNs). A wireless sensor network which consists of a large number of sensor nodes is deployed in environmental fields to serve various applications. Facilitated with the ability of wireless communication and intelligent computation, these nodes become smart sensors which do not only perceive ambient physical parameters but also be able to process information, cooperate with each other and self-organize into the network. These new features assist the sensor nodes as well as the network to operate more efficiently in terms of both data acquisition and energy consumption. Special purposes of the applications require design and operation of WSNs different from conventional networks such as the internet. The network design must take into account of the objectives of specific applications. The nature of deployed environment must be considered. The limited of sensor nodes resources such as memory, computational ability, communication bandwidth and energy source are the challenges in network design. A smart wireless sensor network must be able to deal with these constraints as well as to guarantee the connectivity, coverage, reliability and security of network's operation for a maximized lifetime. This book discusses various aspects of designing such smart wireless sensor networks. Main topics includes: design methodologies, network protocols and algorithms, quality of service management, coverage optimization, time synchronization and security techniques for sensor networks.
