Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reliable Northern Grown Strawberry and Other Small Fruit Plants, Ornamental Shrubs and Gladiolus Bulbs Catalog, 1920 Soil requirements are much the same for straw henies, raspberries and blackberries, but black berries will thrive fairly well ou a thin soil, where the other two would prove unsatisfactory. A soil in which potatoes thrive is usually rich enough for strawberries and raspberries. A sandy loam or friable cla'y loam, well drained, is better than a stiff clay or light sand. A soil that retains moisture but is not wet is desirable for these fruits. An elevation considerably above the sur rounding country is also to be desired, as spring frosts are likely to be less severe on a location.
