Book Reliable Bulk Data Dissemination in Sensor Networks

Download or read book Reliable Bulk Data Dissemination in Sensor Networks written by Leijun Huang and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A wireless sensor network consists of a large number of resource-constrained sensor nodes that are self-organized into a multi-hop network and cooperate on a single task. In many situations, sensor networks need to run for a long time once deployed. When the environment changes during their lifetime, updating the code image or application data at the node for a new task becomes necessary, thus making data dissemination a critical issue where a large data object needs to be reliably propagated to all of the nodes in a network. While most of the current sensor nodes are equipped with a multiple-channel radio, the existing data dissemination approaches such as Deluge [1] do not take advantage of multiple channels. Moreover, these approaches mostly focus on the object delivery latency, while energy efficiency is also very important due to the resource constraints of the sensor nodes. This dissertation proposes three novel protocols for reliable bulk data dissemination, named McTorrent, CORD and McCORD, that focus on both object delivery latency and energy efficiency. These protocols use multiple channels, or a core-based two-phase approach, or both techniques to reduce object delivery latency and energy consumption at each node. The results from experiments on both indoor and outdoor testbeds and extensive simulations in various scenarios show that these protocols significantly reduce the latency and/or energy consumption, compared to the existing approaches"--Abstract.

Book Infuse A TDMA Based Data Dissemination Protocol for Sensor Networks

Download or read book Infuse A TDMA Based Data Dissemination Protocol for Sensor Networks written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliable dissemination of bulk data is one of the important problems in sensor networks. For example, programming or upgrading the software in sensors at run-time requires reliable dissemination of a new program across the network. In this paper, we present Infuse, a reliable data dissemination protocol based on time division multiple access (TDMA) based medium access layer. Although TDMA guarantees collision-freedom, unexpected channel errors (e.g., message corruption, varying signal strengths, etc) can cause random message losses. To deal with this problem, we consider two recovery schemes that use implicit acknowledgments. We also present a scheme to reduce the number of message receptions further. With this approach, sensors typically do not receive a given message multiple times. We also demonstrate that our algorithms can handle failure of sensors.

Book Reliable Data Dissemination in Dense Wireless Networks

Download or read book Reliable Data Dissemination in Dense Wireless Networks written by Weiyao Xiao and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Commercial providers are increasingly permitting third-parties to develop and implement their own applications on wireless devices, ranging from sensors to 3G cellular phones. Accordingly, reliable data dissemination is quickly emerging as a key enabling technology, providing fundamental services such as over-the-air programming and security patching. The commonly high density of wireless devices hampers efficient accomplishment of this task, however. In this dissertation, we address the scalability of reliable data dissemination in two ways: (i) we develop and analyze policies harnessing the multi-channel transceiving capabilities of single radio wireless devices, and (ii) we rigorously address the problem of quantifying forward error correction (FEC) redundancy to eliminate control traffic (e.g., Acknowledgments) with high probability. We first analyze the performance limits of data dissemination in multi-channel, single radio networks. For arbitrary topology networks, we model this problem as a stochastic shortest path optimization and provide approaches to compute the optimal control policy achieving minimum average delay, in a finite number of steps. Due to the prohibitive computational complexity of the optimal solution, we develop asymptotically optimal polices for practical networks with high node density. Our analysis and simulations reveal that a single radio in each receiver suffices to achieve performance gain directly proportional to the number of channels available. Next, pairing rateless coding with extreme value theory, we quantify FEC redundancy by analyzing the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the data dissemination completion time. We precisely characterize this CDF and demonstrate the existence of a phase transition associated with it. Further, we analyze heterogeneous packet loss models, by establishing a connection to the multi-set coupon collector problem. Finally, we address the problem of performing online FEC estimation under unknown channel statistics. Leveraging properties of extreme value estimators, we design novel techniques that extrapolate over limited information. We demonstrate the benefit of accurately quantifying FEC redundancy through real experiments, which reveal drastic reduction in control traffic, energy consumption and overall delay. In summary, this work contributes to the design and analysis of rapid and energy-efficient data dissemination protocols for large scale wireless networks, thereby facilitating their deployment.
