Book Water Management Challenges in Global Change

Download or read book Water Management Challenges in Global Change written by B. Ulanicki and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Management Challenges in Global Change contains the proceedings of the 9th Computing and Control for the Water Industry (CCWI2007) and the Sustainable Urban Water Management (SUWM2007) conferences. The rationale behind these conferences is to improve the management of urban water systems through the development of computerbased methods. Issues such as economic globalisation, climate changes and water shortages call for a new approach to water systems management, which addresses the relevant technical, social and economic aspects. This collection represents the views of academic and industrial experts from a number of countries, who provide technical solutions to current water management problems and present a vision for addressing the global questions. The themes underlying many of the contributions include energy and material savings, water savings and the integration of different aspects of water management. The papers are grouped into three themes covering water distribution systems, sustainable urban water management and modelling of wastewater treatment plants. The water distribution topics cover asset and information management, planning, monitoring and control, hydraulic modelling of steady state and transients, water quality and treatment, demand and leakage management, optimisation, design and decision support systems, as well as reliability and security of water distribution systems. The sustainable urban water management topics include urban drainage systems, water reuse, social aspects of water management and also selected facets of water resources and irrigation. Computer control of wastewater treatment plants has been seen as less advanced than that of clean water systems. To address this imbalance, this book presents a number of modelling techniques developed specifically for these plants. Water Management Challenges in Global Change will prove to be invaluable to water and environmental engineering researchers and academics; managers, engineers and planners; and postgraduate students.

Book Computer Modeling of Free Surface and Pressurized Flows

Download or read book Computer Modeling of Free Surface and Pressurized Flows written by M. Hanif Chaudhry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers are widely used for the analysis, design, and operation of water resource projects. This gives accurate results, allowing the analysis of complex systems which may not have been possible otherwise, and the investigation and comparison of several different alternatives in a short time, thereby reducing the project costs, optimizing design, and efficient utilization of resources. This volume compiles an edited version of the lecture notes specially prepared by 14 well-known European and North American researchers. Part I deals with free-surface flows. Governing equations are derived and their solution by the finite-difference, finite-element, and boundary-integral methods are discussed. Then, turbulence models, three-dimensional models, dam-break flow models, sediment transport models, and flood routing models are presented. Part II is related to the modeling of steady and transient pressurized flows. Governing equations for both single and two-component flows are derived and numerical methods for their solution are presented. The modeling of water quality in pipe networks, of cooling water systems, and slow and rapid transients is then discussed.

Book Pattern Recognition for Reliability Assessment of Water Distribution Networks

Download or read book Pattern Recognition for Reliability Assessment of Water Distribution Networks written by N. Trifunovic and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the patterns that describe reliability of water distribution networks focusing to the node connectivity, energy balance, and economics of construction, operation and maintenance. A number of measures to evaluate the network resilience has been developed and assessed to arrive at more accurate diagnostics of regular and irregular demand scenarios. These measures have been proposed as a part of the methodology for snap-shot assessment of network reliability based on its configuration and hydraulic performance. Practical outcome of the research is the decision support tool for reliability-based design of water distribution networks. This computer package named NEDRA (NEtwork Design and Reliability Assessment) consists of the modules for network generation, filtering, initialisation, optimisation, diagnostics and cost calculation, which can be used for sensitivity analyses of single network layout or assessments of multiple layouts. The study concludes that none of the analysed aspects develops clear singular patterns. Nevertheless, the proposed network buffer index (NBI) and the hydraulic reliability diagram (HRD) as visual representation of the network resilience give sufficient snap-shot pointing the composition of the index value, and displaying possible weak points in the network that can be hidden behind the averaged values of various reliability measures.

Book Losses in Water Distribution Networks

Download or read book Losses in Water Distribution Networks written by M. Farley and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2003-03-31 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a best practice manual for addressing water losses in water distribution networks worldwide. Systems and methodologies are presented for improving water loss and leakage management in a range of networks, from systems with a well-developed infrastructure to those in developing countries where the network may need to be upgraded. The key feature of the manual is a diagnostic approach to develop a water loss strategy - using the appropriate tools to find the right solutions - which can be applied to any network. The methods of assessing the scale and volume of water loss are outlined, together with the procedures for setting up leakage monitoring and detection systems. As well as real losses (leakage) procedures for addressing apparent losses, by introducing regulatory and customer metering policies are explained. Suggestions are made for demand management and water conservation programmes, to complement the water loss strategy. Recommendations are made for training workshops and operation and maintenance programmes to ensure skills transfer and sustainability. The manual is illustrated throughout with case studies. Losses in Water Distribution Networks will appeal to a wide range of practitioners responsible for designing and managing a water loss strategy. These include consultants, operations managers, engineers, technicians and operational staff. It will also be a valuable reference for senior managers and decision makers, who may require an overview of the principles and procedures for controlling losses. The book will also be suitable as a source document for courses in Water Engineering, Resource Management and Environmental Management.
