In your hand you have the second book from the series “XXI Century Techno- gies. ” The first book under the title “Manufacturing Technologies for Machines of the Future” was published by “Springer” in 2003. This book is aimed at solving one of the basic problems in the development of modern machine-building – working out of technologies and manufacturing equipment which would promote the continuous development and improvement of the final product design, rapidly “adaptable” to the requirements of the market as for the quantity, quality, and variety of products manufactured with the lowest cost and minimum time and labor of the product process. In this book the problems of theory and practice of development in the reconfigurable manufacturing systems and transformable factories for various machine-building branches with a focus on automotive industry are discussed. The problems concerning the development of a new class of production systems which in comparison to the flexible manufact- ing systems are composed of a far less quantity of machine-tools (reduced cost of production) are discussed. In comparison to the conventional automated lines (dedicated systems) they make it possible to rapidly transform the equipment for new products manufacturing. The book has some advantages concerning the art of scientific ideas and the presentation of developments.

Book Modularity and Convertibility Characteristics of Reconfigurable Manufacturing System

Download or read book Modularity and Convertibility Characteristics of Reconfigurable Manufacturing System written by Kamal Mittal and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For supervising, controlling the various processes in a business for an effective manufacturing system like vendor - manufacturer relationship, customer manufacturer relationship, shop floor management in the production of goods or services, Operations management plays an important role. Operations management is basically managing the process that converts inputs which is in the forms of raw materials, people, and energy into outputs like goods and/or services. It is a feedback to a manufacturing system that rectify actions and keep the system on track. Therefore the aim of this article is to build stronger manufacturing system for business sustainability in manufacturing enterprises.A manufacturing system is consist of production machines, material handling system, computer system for scheduling and controlling the activities and people for performing different tasks. There are different types of manufacturing systems that have evolved over the years to fulfill the customer requirement in a dynamic and competitive market. Dedicated Manufacturing System (DMS), followed by Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) and Cellular Manufacturing System (CMS) are the different manufacturing systems developed over the course of last century. With time new market conditions have come up for medium and high-volume manufacturers characterized by: short windows of opportunity for new products, and large fluctuations in product demand. By using various engineering methods like simultaneous engineering and computer-aided design the product development time have been reduced drastically to fulfill the requirement for new products. The ramp-up time and the time in designing and building of production system is today's bottleneck for quality production. It is economical and beneficial for changeable market to develop and produce new products by reducing lead time for manufacturing systems. Flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) that can produce various types of products but are not fulfill the demand of products when there is a large variations. Because of average performance of FMSs most of the industrialists are not pleased and therefore such type of systems are not taken in to consideration. Because of the lesser product life cycle of many hardware and software components like computers, drives, controllers and softwares the Flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) become inefficient and outdated. The inefficient production system increases the cost and time in manufacturing of products. Besides that even such type of systems utilizes it's resources fully they are not accepted by rapid changing and growing market. “Because of these disadvantages and developing new market conditions require a new manufacturing approach that enables:The launch of new product models to be undertaken very quickly, Addition of incremental manufacturing capacity as the market grows and New developments in manufacturing technology to be utilized in production”. For benefiting the mass production and allowing the production of any quantity of highly customized products, Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (RMS) are considered as the manufacturing system for the coming years.RMS is defined as a system designed to cater for the requirements of a part family by adjusting its hardware and software components rapidly in response to the abrupt changes in the market. RMS being the most promising technology and with its features it has inbuilt capabilities for capacity adjustment, product variety and shorter reconfiguration time. RMS requires research and development in certain key areas: Research and Development issues associated to design at system level, Research and Development issues associated to design at machine level and Research and Development Issues associated to ramp-up time reduction. For maintaining industrial competitiveness performance measures are very important to analyze the behaviour of manufacturing system. To conduct improvement program and to implement manufacturing decisions effectively performance measures are helpful by studying the current state of manufacturing situation, supervising and controlling of operational efficiency. Although there are many performance measures found in literature but the selection of those measures in an RMS environment to fulfill their objectives is not an easy task. The objective of industry to manufacture the desired quantity at the right time by using best possible method but still some improvement is needed in a manufacturing system based on high level of responsiveness. To become responsive the machines are behave as independent modules, where the stoppage/failure of one component does not forced the stoppage/breakdown of the whole machine and its production. The considered systems are multi-state manufacturing systems (MSMS) that can operate different objects simultaneously, and they are permiting paralleling of similar multi-state modular machines (MSMM) in each production stage. MSMS are having machines that are conventionally evaluated as whole entities which consider reliability, expected production rates for system performance.Reconfigurable manufacturing systems are designed using software and hardware modules that can be combined quickly and reliably. To achieve this, system design requires a RMS having following key characteristics: modularity, integrability, scalability, convertibility, customization and diagnosibility. These characteristics relate to the design of production systems, machines, and their controllers. They may also be applicable to manpower resources, and to the enterprise as a whole. The modular approach in a Reconfigurable Manufacturing System is a natural one and has been used in many different contexts of the human endeavor. All the important components in a reconfigurable manufacturing system like softwares, axes, tooling and controllers are modular in nature. These components can be moderated or replaced if necessary to better suit new applications. The life-cycle costs for these types of manufacturing systems is very low because of easy maintenance of modules. New compensation and calibration algorithms result in greater accuracy by integrating in the machine controller. System reconfiguration and setup need to be carried out quickly to be effective. Changing of part programmes, fixtures, tools, degree of freedom (manual adjustment) are comes under convertibility. To achieve this RMS contains new and advanced mechanisms that allow easy reconfiguration, as well as sensing and diagnosable properties that enable ease of calibration of the machines after reconfiguration. Selection of basic modules, and their synthesis methodologies, allow systems those which are easily integrated, diagnosed, converted, and customized. In the present work characteristics of modularity and convertibility have been discussed. An illustration is given to understand the applicability of the modularity and convertibility characteristics in the Reconfigurable manufacturing system for humaninzing work and work environment.

Book Integrated Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems and Smart Value Chain

Download or read book Integrated Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems and Smart Value Chain written by M. Reza Abdi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book develops manufacturing concepts and applications beyond physical production and towards a wider manufacturing value chain incorporating external stakeholders that include suppliers of raw materials and parts, customers, collaborating manufacturing companies, manufacturing service providers, and environmental organisations. The focal point of the value chain remains as a manufacturing system and its operations whiles flows of parts/materials and information and services across the supply/value chain tiers are taken into account. The book emphasises on the two innovative paradigms of Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (RMS) and the 4th industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) along with their incorporated development. RMS, as a relatively new paradigm, has been introduced to meet the requirements of ‘the factories of the future’, which is aimed by Industry 4.0, though introducing greater responsiveness and customised flexibility into production systems, in which changes in product volumes and types occur regularly. Manufacturing responsiveness can be achieved by RMS through reconfiguring the production facilities according to changing demands of products and new market conditions. The book addresses challenges of mass-customisation and dynamic changes in the supply-chain environment by focusing on developing new techniques related to integrability, scalability and re-configurability at a system level and manufacturing readiness in terms of financial and technical feasibility of RMS. It demonstrate the expected impacts of an RMS design on operational performance and its supply/value chain in the current/future manufacturing environment facing dynamic changes in the internal/external circumstances. In order to establish a circular economy through the RMS value chain, an integrated data-based reconfiguration link is introduced to incorporate information sharing amongst the value chain stakeholders and facilitate grouping products into families with allocation of the product families to the corresponding system configurations with optimal product-process allocation. Decision support systems such as multi criteria decision making tools are developed and applied for the selection of product families and optimising product-process configuration. The proposed models are illustrated through real case studies in applicable manufacturing firms.
