Book Relaxation Dynamics in Laboratory and Astrophysical Plasmas

Download or read book Relaxation Dynamics in Laboratory and Astrophysical Plasmas written by Patrick H. Diamond and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable book provides a unique opportunity to embrace the complex and fascinating theory of relaxation processes in magnetized plasmas, both in astrophysics and in controlled fusion plasmas. The subjects range from dynamo and reconnection processes in magneto-hydrodynamics and electromagnetic turbulence to fast transport events in self-organized turbulence. Such phenomena, recognized as key bolts in our present understanding, turn out to be extremely challenging for theoretical models. This book efficiently helps to bridge our understanding and description of such processes, analogously observed in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas.

Book Microphysics of Cosmic Plasmas

Download or read book Microphysics of Cosmic Plasmas written by André Balogh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a comprehensive review of physical processes in astrophysical plasmas. This title presents a review of the detailed aspects of the physical processes that underlie the observed properties, structures and dynamics of cosmic plasmas. An assessment of the status of understanding of microscale processes in all astrophysical collisionless plasmas is provided. The topics discussed include turbulence in astrophysical and solar system plasmas as a phenomenological description of their dynamic properties on all scales; observational, theoretical and modelling aspects of collisionless magnetic reconnection; the formation and dynamics of shock waves; and a review and assessment of microprocesses, such as the hierarchy of plasma instabilities, non-local and non-diffusive transport processes and ionisation and radiation processes. In addition, some of the lessons that have been learned from the extensive existing knowledge of laboratory plasmas as applied to astrophysical problems are also covered. This volume is aimed at graduate students and researchers active in the areas of cosmic plasmas and space science. Originally published in Space Science Reviews journal, Vol. 278/2-4, 2013.

Book Astrophysical Plasmas and Fluids

Download or read book Astrophysical Plasmas and Fluids written by Vinod Krishan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook for a one semester graduate course introduces the phenomenal diversity of dominant roles that plasmas and fluids play in the near and far reaches of the universe. Krishan (Indian Institute for Astrophysics) uses the Liouville equation to derive the kinetic, the two-fluid, and the single-fluid descriptions of a plasma and a fluid, then demonstrates the use of these descriptions for specific situations. Fluid and plasma configurations and their radiative signatures figure prominently. Problems are designed to give a feel for the quantitative properties of celestial objects. Book Magnetohydrodynamics of Plasma Relaxation

Download or read book Magnetohydrodynamics of Plasma Relaxation written by S. Ortolani and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a concise description of the phenomenon of plasma relaxation from the point of view of resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory. Magnetized plasmas relax when they seek their natural state of lowest energy subject to certain topological constraints imposed by the magnetic field. Relaxation may be fast and dynamic or slow and gradual depending on the external environment in which the magnetoplasma system evolves. Relaxation occurs throughout the universe and may describe such diverse phenomena as dynamos, solar flares, and the operation of magnetic fusion energy experiments. This book concentrates on the dynamic, rather than variational aspects of relaxation. While the processes described are general, the book focuses on the reversed-field pinch experiment as a paradigm for plasma relaxation and dynamo action. Examples from other branches of plasma physics are also discussed. The authors draw upon their extensive experience in numerical and experimental studies of relaxation.

Book Plasma Physics for Astrophysics

Download or read book Plasma Physics for Astrophysics written by Russell M. Kulsrud and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, a distinguished expert introduces plasma physics from the ground up, presenting it as a comprehensible field that can be grasped largely on the basis of physical intuition and qualitative reasoning, similar to other fields of physics. Plasmas are ionized gases that can be found in a hydrogen bomb explosion, the confinement chamber of an experimental fusion reactor, the solar corona, the aurora borealis, the interstellar medium, and the immediate vicinity of a gravitational black hole. Not surprisingly, plasma physics appears to consist of numerous topics arising independently from astrophysics, fusion physics, and other practical applications, and hence it remains a field poorly understood even by many astrophysicists. But, in fact, most of these topics can be approached from the same perspective, with a simple, physical intuition. Selecting simple examples and presenting them in a simultaneously intuitive and rigorous manner, Russell Kulsrud guides readers through a careful derivation of the results and allows them to think through the physics for themselves. Thus, they are better prepared for complex cases and more general results. The first eleven chapters present topics by their importance to plasma physics while the last three chapters emphasize the field's astrophysical applications, applying the results accrued earlier. Throughout, many problems illustrate the field's applications. Based on a course the author taught for many years, Plasma Physics for Astrophysics is intended for graduate students as well as for working astrophysicists.
