Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.

Second, we found that we really do possess the ability to communicate instantly with each other. Third, we found that we also possess the ability to discern and manage hidden realities and future possibilities. Fourth, we found that we exist independent of the human body. And fifth, we found that we come in and out of human lifetimes in a recurring sort of way. However, we also observed that these extraordinary abilities, generally ESP in nature, have been pushed out to the edges of our daily thinking by socially approved conventional thinking. Consequently, even though our extraordinary gifts may be helpful in pursuing our goal of saving our planet Earth from humanity's misguided adventures, as long as our ESP gifts are marginalized in consciousness, they will not do us much good. Rote conventional thinking keeps getting in the way. In this book, Expressions of Consciousness, we will explore conventional thinking. We will investigate conventional thinking by taking samples of today's major conventional thinkings, and then submit these samples to a common analytic grid, with an eye to our goal of quickly turning our planetary situation around. Samples will include Buddhism, Capitalism, Christianity, Communism, Confucianism, Daoism or Taoism, Hinduism, Individualism, Islam or Islamism, Judaism and Science. Subsequent books in the series will continue the exploration of collective human consciousness by examining related areas. The historical roots underpinning conventional thinking will be charted. Lesser known alternatives to conventional thinking will also be looked at, and possibilities probed for usefulness. In this series exploring collective human consciousness, the ultimate hope is that paths will be discovered and utilized in such a way so as to help us reclaim the beauty and well-being of our awesome planet Earth, and save ourselves in the process. All of us enjoy life here on this planet, and presently humanity is at risk of losing that existence. The signs of imminent environmental collapse are all around us. Visible Identities fills this gap. Drawing on both philosophical sources as well as theories and empirical studies in the social sciences, Martín Alcoff makes a strong case that identities are not like special interests, nor are they doomed to oppositional politics, nor do they inevitably lead to conformism, essentialism, or reductive approaches to judging others. Identities are historical formations and their political implications are open to interpretation. But identities such as race and gender also have a powerful visual and material aspect that eliminativists and social constructionists often underestimate. Visible Identities offers a careful analysis of the political and philosophical worries about identity and argues that these worries are neither supported by the empirical data nor grounded in realistic understandings of what identities are. Martín Alcoff develops a more realistic characterization of identity in general through combining phenomenological approaches to embodiment with hermeneutic concepts of the interpretive horizon. Besides addressing the general contours of social identity, Martín Alcoff develops an account of the material infrastructure of gendered identity, compares and contrasts gender identities with racialized ones, and explores the experiential aspects of racial subjectivity for both whites and non-whites.
