This book was released on 2014 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tokai-to-Kamiokande (T2K) experiment is an off-axis, long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment based in Japan. One of the largest sources of systematic uncertainty in the oscillation analysis is the uncertainty on neutrino cross sections. In this thesis, we use the [pi]0 detector (P0D) of the T2K Near Detector to measure one cross section of muon neutrinos. The P0D is a scintillator based detector with a precision water target which allows for a measurement with water and without water. In particular, we measured the relative cross section of charged current multiple pion production to inclusive charged current production. The analysis is performed with a multi-variate template fit using two Monte Carlo neutrino generators, NEUT and GENIE. The relative ratio for NEUT(GENIE) is 0.126 ± 0.024+[0.022-0.021] (0.100 ± 0.018 [+0.018-0.017]) for the Water-In configuration and 0.104 ± 0.029 [+0.030-0.035] (0.121 ± 0.021[+0.034-0.036]) for the Water-Out configuration. The prospects for a precision water cross section measurement are also discussed.

Book Measurement of the Muon Neutrino Charged Current Interactions and the Muon Neutrino Single Pion Cross Section on CH Using the T2K Near Detector

Download or read book Measurement of the Muon Neutrino Charged Current Interactions and the Muon Neutrino Single Pion Cross Section on CH Using the T2K Near Detector written by Raquel Castillo Fernández and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Muon Neutrino Charged Current Single Pion Production on Various Targets in the MINERvA Detector

Download or read book Muon Neutrino Charged Current Single Pion Production on Various Targets in the MINERvA Detector written by Aaron Bercellie and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 795 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters at accelerator-based experiments require precise knowledge of neutrino interaction cross sections. A significant fraction of neutrino interactions observed in these experiments produce single charged pions. While single charged pion production has been measured on hydrocarbon and water, few precise measurements exist for heavier targets, and there are no high statistics measurements that directly compare pion production on different targets. This thesis measures differential cross sections of muon neutrino charged current single charged pion production with no other mesons in the final state in a neutrino beam with a mean energy of ~ 6 GeV. The pion production is studied on targets of scintillator, carbon, water, iron, and lead at MINERvA, a neutrino cross section experiment located in the NuMI beamline at Fermilab. These measured cross sections are differential in [mu]- and [pi]+ kinematics. A strong suppression of low Q2 and an enhancement of low T[Pi] are observed relative to commonly used neutrino interaction models in both the light and heavy nuclear targets. Incorporation of these observed effects in future neutrino oscillation experiments will improve their ability to measure energy of neutrino interactions, and therefore measure the parameters governing neutrino oscillations."--Page xii

This book was released on 2011 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charged current single pion production (CC[pi]+) and charged current quasi-elastic scattering (CCQE) are the most abundant interaction types for neutrinos at energies around 1 GeV, a region of great interest to oscillation experiments. The cross-sections for these processes, however, are not well understood in this energy range. This dissertation presents a measurement of the ratio of CC[pi]+ to CCQE cross-sections for muon neutrinos on mineral oil (CH2) in the MiniBooNE experiment. The measurement is presented here both with and without corrections for hadronic re-interactions in the target nucleus and is given as a function of neutrino energy in the range 0.4 GeV

Book A Study of Charged Current Single Charged Pion Productions on Carbon in a Few GeV Neutrino Beam

Download or read book A Study of Charged Current Single Charged Pion Productions on Carbon in a Few GeV Neutrino Beam written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding single charged pion production via neutrino-nucleus charged current interaction in the neutrino energy region of a few GeV is essential for future neutrino oscillation experiments since this process is a dominant background for v[mu] → vx oscillation measurements. There are two contributions to this process: single pion production via baryonic resonance (v[mu]N → [mu]- N[pi]+) and coherent pion production interacting with the entire nucleus (v[mu]A → [mu]- A[pi]+), where N is nucleon in the nucleus and A is the nucleus. The purpose of the study presented in this thesis is a precise measurement of charged current single charged pion productions, resonant and coherent pion productions, with a good final state separation in the neutrino energy region of a few GeV. In this thesis, we focus on the study of charged current coherent pion production from muon neutrinos scattering on carbon, v[mu] 12C → [mu]-12C[pi]+, in the SciBooNE experiment. This is motivated by the fact that without measuring this component first, the precise determination of resonant pion production cross section can not be achieved since the contribution of coherent pion production in the region of small muon scattering angle is not small. Furthermore, the coherent process is particularly interesting because it is deeply rooted in fundamental physics via Adler's partially conserved axial-vector current theorem. We took data from June 2007 until August 2008, in both the neutrino and antineutrino beam. In total, 2.52 x 1020 protons on target were collected. We have performed a search for charged current coherent pion production by using SciBooNE's full neutrino data set, corresponding to 0.99 x 1020 protons on target. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the cross section ratio of charged current coherent pion production to the total charged current cross section at 0.67 x 10-2 at mean neutrino energy 1.1 GeV and 1.36 x 10-2 at mean neutrino energy 2.2 GeV. We reveal that the Rein-Sehgal model widely used in neutrino oscillation experiments breaks down at the neutrino energy region of a few GeV. This creates active controversies on the model of coherent pion production, and the understanding of coherent pion production is being progressed. In addition, future prospects of measurements of charged current single charged pion production in SciBooNE are discussed.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinos are a nearly massless, neutral particle in the Standard Model that only interact via the weak interaction. Experimental confirmation of neutrino oscillations, in which a neutrino created as a particular type (electron, muon or tau) can be observed as a different type after propagating some distance, earned the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics. Neutrino oscillation experiments rely on accurate measurements of neutrino interactions with matter, such as that presented here. Neutrinos also provide a unique probe of the nucleus, complementary to electron scattering experiments. This thesis presents a measurement of the charged-current inclusive cross section for muon neutrinos and antineutrinos in the energy range 2 to 50 GeV with the MINERvA detector. MINERvA is a neutrino scattering experiment in the NuMI neutrino beam at Fermilab, near Chicago. A cross section measures the probability of an interaction occurring, measured here as a function of neutrino energy. To extract a cross section from data, the observed rate of interactions is corrected for detector efficiency and divided by the number of scattering nucleons in the target and the flux of neutrinos in the beam. The neutrino flux is determined with the low-$\nu$ method, which relies on the principle that the cross section for interactions with very low recoil energy is nearly constant as a function of neutrino energy. The measured cross section is compared with world data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SciBooNE Collaboration reports a measurement of inclusive charged current interactions of muon neutrinos on carbon with an average energy of 0.8 GeV using the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam. We compare our measurement with two neutrino interaction simulations: NEUT and NUANCE. The charged current interaction rates (product of flux and cross section) are extracted by fitting the muon kinematics, with a precision of 6-15% for the energy dependent and 3% for the energy integrated analyses. We also extract CC inclusive interaction cross sections from the observed rates, with a precision of 10-30% for the energy dependent and 8% for the energy integrated analyses. This is the first measurement of the CC inclusive cross section on carbon around 1 GeV. These results can be used to convert previous SciBooNE cross section ratio measurements to absolute cross section values.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sample of charged-current single pion production events for the semi- exclusive channel [nu]æ + CH 2!æ-[pi]0 + nucleon(s) has been obtained using neutrino exposures of the MINERvA detector. Differential cross sections for muon momentum, muon production angle, pion momentum, pion production angle, and four-momentum transfer square Q2 are reported and are compared to a GENIE-based simulation. The cross section versus neutrino energy is also re- ported. The effects of pion final-state interactions on these cross sections are investigated. The effect of baryon resonance suppression at low Q2 is examined and an event re-weight used by two previous experiments is shown to improve the data versus simulation agreement. The differential cross sections for Q2 for E[nu]

Book Measurement of Neutrino Induced Charged Current Neutral Pion Production Cross Section at SciBooNE

This book was released on 2014 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SciBooNE is a neutrino scattering experiment located in the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermilab. It collected data from June 2007 to August 2008 to accurately measure muon neutrino and anti-neutrino cross sections on carbon around 1 GeV neutrino energy. In this thesis we present the results on the measurement of the muon neutrino cross section resulting in a [mu]- plus a single [pi]0 final state (CC- [pi]0 channel). The present work will show the steps taken to achieve this result: from the reconstruction improvements to the background extraction. The flux-averaged CC - [pi]0 production cross section measurement obtained in this thesis [sigma]CC- [pi]0 [Phi] = (5.6 ± 1.9fit ± 0.7beam ± 0.5int - 0.7det) × 10-40 cm2/N at an average energy of 0.89 GeV is found to agree well both with the expectation from the Monte Ca.
