Book Relative Attenuation of TM TE Waves Propagating in the Earth ionosphere Waveguide

Download or read book Relative Attenuation of TM TE Waves Propagating in the Earth ionosphere Waveguide written by Paul A. Kossey and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ionospheric and ground reflection coefficients for transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) waves are given, at a frequency of 17 kHz and over a wide range of incidence angles. Both normal and severely disturbed ionospheric conditions are considered, and the relative attenuations of the TM and TE waves upon reflection from a soil of high electrical conductivity, and from ice, are given. A method of determining modal resonance angles from computations of ionospheric and ground reflection coefficients is described, and estimates of the relative attenuation rates of the TM and TE waves propagating in the earth-ionosphere waveguide are given.

Book Characteristics of the Earth ionosphere Waveguide for VLF Radio Waves

Download or read book Characteristics of the Earth ionosphere Waveguide for VLF Radio Waves written by James R. Wait and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal results of this technical note are graphical presentations of the attenuation rates, phase velocities, and excitation factors for the dominant modes in the earth-ionosphere waveguide. The frequency range considered is 8 kc/s to 30 kc/s. *The model adopted for the ionosphere has an exponential variation for both the electron density and the collision frequency, and the effect of the earth's magnetic field is considered.Comparison with published experimental data confirms that the minimum attenuation of VLF radio waves in daytime is approximtely at 18 kc/s, while at night it is somewhat lower. The directional dependences of propagation predicted by the theory are also confirmed by experimental data.(Author).

Book Demonstration of Transverse Electric TE Mode Radio Propagation in the Earth Ionosphere Waveguide

Download or read book Demonstration of Transverse Electric TE Mode Radio Propagation in the Earth Ionosphere Waveguide written by and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made of the use of Transverse Electric (TE) Modes of propagation rather than the conventional Transverse Magnetic (TM) Modes at Very Low Frequencies. Theoretical comparisons show that TE waves should propagate better then TM waves in the earth-ionosphere waveguide under both normal and disturbed ionospheric conditions. Electromagnetic boundary conditions at the surface of the earth prevent efficient excitation and reception of radio waves generated in the TE Mode, but at higher altitudes, air-to-air communications is a practical reality.

Book VLF LF TE Mode Propagation Under Disturbed Ionospheric Conditions

Download or read book VLF LF TE Mode Propagation Under Disturbed Ionospheric Conditions written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report compares calculated attenuation rates for transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes propagating in the earth- ionosphere waveguide. Frequencies from 10 to 50 kHz are considered, and attention is restricted to situations where the fields can be represented in terms of the least-attenuated TM or TE mode. Nine model ionospheres corresponding to conditions caused by widespread high-altitude fission debris are used as inputs to the calculations. Certain of these models are also representative of polar-cap-absorption (PCA) events. The calculations utilize full-wave methods, and account for the vertical inhomogeneity of the ionosphere, the effects of heavy ions, and the curvature of the earth. In addition to the modal attenuation rates, results are given for field-strength height-profiles, plane-wave ionospheric reflection coefficients, and the relative importance of heavy ions vis-a-vis electrons.

Book Terrestrial Propagation of Long Electromagnetic Waves

Download or read book Terrestrial Propagation of Long Electromagnetic Waves written by Janis Galejs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrestrial Propagation of Long Electromagnetic Waves deals with the propagation of long electromagnetic waves confined principally to the shell between the earth and the ionosphere, known as the terrestrial waveguide. The discussion is limited to steady-state solutions in a waveguide that is uniform in the direction of propagation. Wave propagation is characterized almost exclusively by mode theory. The mathematics are developed only for sources at the ground surface or within the waveguide, including artificial sources as well as lightning discharges. This volume is comprised of nine chapters and begins with an introduction to the fundamental concepts of wave propagation in a planar and curved isotropic waveguide. A number of examples are presented to illustrate the effects of an anisotropic ionosphere. The basic equations are summarized and plane-wave reflection from a dielectric interface is considered, along with the superposition of two obliquely incident plane waves. The properties of waveguide boundaries are implicitly represented by Fresnel reflection coefficients. Subsequent chapters focus on boundaries of the terrestrial guide; lightning discharges as a natural source of extremely-low-frequency and very-low-frequency radiation; and the mode theory for waves in an isotropic spherical shell. This book will be a useful resource for students and practitioners of physics.

Book On the Ionospheric Parameters Which Govern High Latitude ELF Propagation in the Earth Ionosphere Waveguide

Download or read book On the Ionospheric Parameters Which Govern High Latitude ELF Propagation in the Earth Ionosphere Waveguide written by Carl Greifinger and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate wave solution is obtained for the propagating ELF mode at high latitudes in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide. A simple approximate expression for the complex propagation constant emerges from the solution. The propagation constant depends on four parameters, two altitudes and a scale height associated with each altitude. The lower altitude is the height at which the conduction current parallel to the magnetic field becomes equal to the displacement current. The associated scale height is the local scale height of the parallel conductivity. Under daytime ionospheric conditions, the upper altitude is the height at which the local wave number becomes equal to the reciprocal of the local scale height of the refractive index. The associated scale height is the local scale height of the refractive index. Under the simplest nighttime conditions, the second set of parameters is replaced by the altitude of the E-region bottom and the local wave number just inside the E-region. The relative phase velocity depends, in first approximation, only on the ratio of the two altitudes. The attenuation rate depends on the other two parameters, as well. The two principal attenuation mechanisms are Joule heating by longitudinal currents in the vicinity of the lower altitude and energy leakage of the whistler component of the ELF wave at the upper altitude.
