Download or read book Relationships of Host Plant Vigor Stalk Moisture Content and Stalk stored Soluble Carbohydrates to the Girdling Activity of the Southwestern Corn Borer Diatraea Grandiosella Dyar Lepidoptera written by Donald B. Zepp and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of experiments was conducted during 1973-1976 at the University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of Missouri Delta Center Research Farm in Pemiscot County, Missouri; these studies were designed to investigate the hypotheses that the girdling activity of the southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella Dyar (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae is directly related to host plant physiology is a regulatory mechanism of this girdling. Corn leaf removal and fruiting prevention studies were undertaken in 1973 in Bonne and Pemiscot Counties. In the latter, data were recorded regarding the effects of leaf removal and/or ear bagging on the incidence of girdling of infested stalks and the effects of planting date on natural infestation. The Boone County portion of these studies provided data regarding the corn stalk moisture and soluble solid contents of the treated plants, and also provided comparison of these factors in girdled and nongirled plants. The girdled plants of this studu were also analyzed to determine their moisture content and soluble solid percentages (SSP) above and below the sites of girdling to detect gradient effects on girdling. Preliminary screening of eight vareties of sweet sorghum (sorgo), two varieties of corn, and one variety each of grain sorghum and sugar cane were conducted in Pemiscot County in 1973. The percentages of successful infestation and infested plants girdled were analyzed and used to select five sorgo varieties for moisture content and SSP analyses in 1974 in Boone County.(...).

Book excerpt: Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a soil bacterium that for more than a century has been known as a pathogen causing the plant crown gall disease. Unlike many other pathogens, Agrobacterium has the ability to deliver DNA to plant cells and permanently alter the plant genome. The discovery of this unique feature 30 years ago has provided plant scientists with a powerful tool to genetically transform plants for both basic research purposes and for agric- tural development. Compared to physical transformation methods such as particle bomba- ment or electroporation, Agrobacterium-mediated DNA delivery has a number of advantages. One of the features is its propensity to generate single or a low copy number of integrated transgenes with defined ends. Integration of a single transgene copy into the plant genome is less likely to trigger “gene silencing” often associated with multiple gene insertions. When the first edition of Agrobacterium Protocols was published in 1995, only a handful of plants could be routinely transformed using Agrobacterium. Ag- bacterium-mediated transformation is now commonly used to introduce DNA into many plant species, including monocotyledon crop species that were previously considered non-hosts for Agrobacterium. Most remarkable are recent devel- ments indicating that Agrobacterium can also be used to deliver DNA to non-plant species including bacteria, fungi, and even mammalian cells.
