Book excerpt: This qualitative study explored how feminism as a social identity impacts how women interpret their career and life experiences. The overarching research question that guided the study was: How do feminist-identified women make sense of their feminist identity, life experiences, and career path? The theoretical framework that provided the lens for the study included feminist, multicultural, intersectionality, and career development theories. Two distinct bodies of literature were reviewed to provide a foundation for the study: (a) women's career development, in particular, the supports and barriers experienced, and (b) feminist identity, including influences to adopting the feminist label and factors associated with a feminist identity such as the expectation of egalitarian relationships. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was the research design and informed the data collection and analysis. Eight college-educated and feminist-identified women participated in the study and data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Four themes emerged through the data analysis: (a) personal journey to feminism, (b) community of support, (c) adversity experienced, and (d) empowerment and authenticity. Although there were a few limitations around generalizability, the findings suggest a connection between feminist identity and career choices as well as the positive impact women can have on other women through providing inspiration, mentoring, and support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More women are entering the workforce (Betz, 2005), and these women have an interest in managing multiple life roles (Hoffnung, 2004). Multiple roles can be beneficial (Barnett & Hyde, 2001) or problematic (Adelmann, 1994) for one's overall well-being, and can be determined by one's subjective perception of ability to manage roles. This study examined multiple role management through the lens of social cognitive career theory (Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994) within a female sample. Maternal role modeling and feminist identification were proposed to function as predictors of self-efficacy expectations and outcome expectations for multiple role management. Within the social cognitive career theory model, these predictors were operationalized as learning experiences of young women hypothesized to influence confidence to manage life roles of worker, parent, and partner. These three roles were selected for the present study based on their common assessment in prior literature (Hoffnung, 2004; Kerpelman & Schvaneveldt, 1999; Riggio & Desrochers, 2006; Tingey, Kiger, & Riley, 1996) and research that indicated these three roles as ideal life roles among young women (Bridges, 1987). Data were collected from 422 undergraduate women at a Midwestern University. Participants completed a self-efficacy for multiple role management measure modeled from the SEERM (Lefcourt, 1995), the Influence of Others on Academic and Career Decisions Scale (Nauta & Kokaly, 2001), a maternal role modeling measure developed based on literature (Weer et al., 2006), the Feminist Identity Composite (Fisher et al., 2000), the Feminist Beliefs and Behavior measure (Zucker, 2004), a multiple roles outcome expectations measure developed based on literature (Fouad & Guillen, 2006; Lent & Brown, 2006), a checklist to assess participants' identified primary role models, and an open-ended item for participants to describe concluding comments. Structural equation model analyses demonstrated inadequate fit between the model and data. Findings demonstrated significant paths extending from feminist identity to self-efficacy expectations, feminist identity to outcome expectations, and self-efficacy expectations to outcome expectations. Exploratory analyses involving substitution of maternal role modeling items with the IOACDS revealed maternal role modeling significantly predicted self-efficacy expectations. Findings were explained based on the conceptualization of variables and measurement concerns.

Book excerpt: Sexism is a significant social problem that deeply affects women's lives, and a large body of research has demonstrated the relationship between discrimination and negative outcomes for women. Feminist consciousness has been suggested as means of challenging these deleterious effects by providing women with a mental framework through which to contextualize and understand this discrimination (Landrine & Klonoff, 1997). Downing and Roush's (1985) model of feminist identity development has been the most commonly used form of conceptualizing women's feminist consciousness but this theory fails to differentiate between the attributes of feminist self-labeling and acceptance of a feminist worldview. In order to provide a more nuanced understanding of how feminist traits relate to women's empowerment the present study used Downing and Roush's five feminist identity styles as a means of operationalizing different orientations to feminist consciousness. These feminist attitudes and feminist self-identification were explored jointly and separately in their connection with personal empowerment specifically as it is conceptualized in feminist therapy theory. A total of 612 traditional college-age undergraduate women (18 to 25 years old) completed a series of online questionnaires to assess feminist attitudes, feminist self-labeling, and personal empowerment. Results support the idea that there are conceptually distinct aspects of feminist consciousness that can be effectively operationalized by Downing and Roush's five identity styles, that there is a significant difference between each of the identity styles of both feminist-identified and non-feminist-identified women, and that there are significant discrepancies between the identity style scores of women who do versus do not self-label as feminist. The present data also provide support for previous research which has suggested that there are positive consequents associated with feminist self-labeling and with the recognition of the existence of sexism that stems from holding pro-feminist attitudes, reflecting a noteworthy relationship between feminist consciousness and personal empowerment.
