These were my first efforts as an author, which were published in 2013: Promoting a Culture of Safety: Preventing Central Line Infections in Weill Cornell Medical Center, which used a performance improvement process to lower the rate at which critically ill patients in cardiac care developed central line infections, and Factors Influencing Critical Nurses' Perception of their Overall Job Satisfaction: An Empirical Study, which used a correctional approach and was statistically analyzed to determine the perception of critical-care nurses of their manager's leadership style and its effect on their job satisfaction. Having been on the receiving end of leadership behaviors gave me a firsthand opportunity to observe these diverse nurse leaders at both extremes of the spectrumfrom laissez-faire leadership style to dictatorial leadership style and everything in between. Each encounter has enriched my life immeasurably. My personal and professional experiences, as well as the knowledge I gained from completing my dissertation, all compelled me to write this bookto share with novice managers and those aspiring for a leadership role an awareness and provide them with some valuable information needed as they forge their career paths into a leadership role, knowing that one of the keys to effective leadership is the ability to stay intellectually curious and committed to learning with the understanding that new knowledge can come from variety of sources and to make it a point of duty to be always on a lookout for new knowledge.

Book excerpt: Leader empowering behavior is a facilitative process where employees perceive their leader to allow self-management and self-leadership of employees. Leader empowering behaviors can be perceived by employees as either enabling or burdensome. The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to examine the relationship of leader empowering behaviors with nurse demographics, work engagement and intent to stay. A convenience sample of nurses (N = 212) employed in various nursing units within four hospitals completed an online survey related to perceived leader empowering behaviors, and the nurse's level of work engagement and intent to stay in his/her organization of employment. Overall, the staff nurses in this study perceived their leader to be empowering (M = 5.62, SD = 1.07). A moderate, positive correlation was found between leader empowering behavior (LEB) and work engagement [([rho]) = 0.4559, p[less than]0.001)]. A moderate, positive correlation was also found between leader empowering behavior and Intent to stay, [([rho]) = 0.4937, p[less than]0.001)]. A strong, positive correlation was found between Intent to stay and work engagement, [([rho]) = 0.5164, p [less than]0.001)]. No significant differences were found between the staff nurse's age groups (p = 0.368) and LEB. No significant differences were found in LEB when the sample was divided into the staff nurse's age groups, education level, years in current department/unit, years in current hospital, years in nursing, employment status, and shift worked. The results of the study highlight the significance of leader empowering behaviors on staff nurse empowerment, work engagement, and intent to stay in their organization of employment.

Book excerpt: The healthcare community needs to be concerned about nursing turnover intention and the effect on the projected nursing shortage. The evaluation of nursing turnover intention and the association between turnover intention and various predictors needs to be determined. Job satisfaction and perceived stress have been identified to influence the intention to turnover. In addition, environmental factors (i.e. odor, noise, and light) may influence perceived stress and job satisfaction. This study tested theoretical relationships between the dependent variables of perceived stress, job satisfaction, and turnover intention and each of the independent variables of (a) odor, (b) noise, and (c) light. The sample was comprised of 116 full-time registered nurses who worked on the medical-surgical unit of a 588 bed Level 1 trauma center located in northern New Jersey. Hypothesis testing employed correlational and regression statistical techniques. Statistically significant relationships were found between perceived stress and job satisfaction (r =.549, p =.000), job satisfaction and turnover intention (r = .740, p = .000), perceived stress and turnover intention (r =.336, p =.000), and perceived level of odor and job satisfaction (r = -.272, p =.003). The relationships between perceived stress and job satisfaction, job satisfaction and turnover intention, and perceived stress and turnover intention were anticipated due to the strong theoretical and empirical evidence supporting these relationships. Although a specific hypothesis was not proposed to combine all independent variables to explain the dependent variable of turnover intention, all independent variables were added to a regression model using backward regression. Backward regression was used because none of the independent variables were strong predictors of turnover intention. The environmental factors did not contribute significantly to the variance in turnover intention. Likewise, perceived stress offered little contribution. Finally, level of light and job satisfaction, together, explained 56% of the variance in turnover intention.
