Book The Relationship of Religiosity Spirituality and High risk Sexual and Related Behaviors Among Black Men who Have Sex with Men black MSM

Download or read book The Relationship of Religiosity Spirituality and High risk Sexual and Related Behaviors Among Black Men who Have Sex with Men black MSM written by Tommie Lee Watkins and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion and spirituality are important concepts for many Black MSM. While many social factors may be associated with the increasing disparity of HIV infection among Black MSM, high levels of religiosity and spirituality prevalent in Black culture may be correlated with high risk behavior among Black MSM and may help explain this population's increasing incidence of HIV infection. Research supports a relationship between religiosity, spirituality, and high risk behavior among populations. Some research has suggested that religiosity and spirituality among Black MSM may be correlated but are multifaceted constructs. Conclusions suggest that among Black MSM these constructs account for certain levels of cognitive dissonance among Black MSM addressing their sexual and religious identity and can lead to negative coping behaviors and negative health outcomes (e.g., higher sexual risk, higher substance abuse, and higher levels of depression) among Black MSM. Findings also suggest positive spiritual and religious experiences may reduce the level of dissonance experienced by some Black MSM and may lead to positive health outcomes. Despite the unique role of religiosity and spirituality among Black MSM, research has not examined the relationships of these constructs and high sexual risk behavior among Black MSM. Future effective HIV prevention interventions intended for Black MSM may well include dissonance reduction, as well as, spirituality and religiosity components to achieve risk reduction interventions that may well decrease the continued HIV incidence among Black MSM.

Book Religiosity Ethnic Identity and Risky Sexual Behavior in an African American Church affiliated Population

Download or read book Religiosity Ethnic Identity and Risky Sexual Behavior in an African American Church affiliated Population written by Starlyn Montez Hawes and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans are disproportionately burdened by sexually transmitted infections and human immunodeficiency virus in the US. The current study examined relationships between demographics, religiosity, ethnic identity, and sexual risk behaviors among 202 sexually active African American church-affiliated participants (mean age = 25; 69% female). Participants were fairly religious as evidenced by their reports of weekly engagement of scripture reading and daily engagement in thoughts of God and prayer. Participants spent quite a bit to a great deal of time utilizing positive religious coping and little to no time utilizing negative religious coping. In addition, participant's God control beliefs moderately influenced their choices related to engagement in sex. Participants reported moderate levels of ethnic identity exploration and commitment. On average, participants reported 10 lifetime sex partners and two within the past six months. Age was significantly predictive of lifetime sexual checklist factors (i.e., having sex while high on drugs or alcohol, being a victim of domestic violence, having sex with someone who has been in the correctional system) and previous six month and lifetime sex-only factors (i.e., number of sex partners, condom use). None of the primary study predictors (i.e., religious beliefs and behaviors, religious coping, God control beliefs, ethnic identity) were significantly associated with risky sexual behaviors.

Book Adult Sexual Assault as a Moderator Between Religiosity and Sexual Risk Taking Among College Women

Download or read book Adult Sexual Assault as a Moderator Between Religiosity and Sexual Risk Taking Among College Women written by Jana K. Tran and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual risk taking among college women is a major public health concern, as it leads to negative health consequences, such as sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 2010; Finer & Henshaw, 2006). Policy makers have become increasingly interested in collaborating with religious organizations to create faith-based education efforts to address these sexual health problems (Whitehead & Ooms, 1999). Religious teachings often endorse restrictive sexual scripts that exert social control on sexual behavior (Rotosky et al., 2003). However, findings regarding the relation of religiosity to sexual risk taking have been mixed within the college student population. One potential moderator that may help explain these inconsistencies is adult sexual assault (ASA), which has consistently been associated with increased engagement in sexual risk tasking. The purpose of the current study was to use archival data to examine ASA as a moderator of the relation of religiosity to sexual risk taking among college women, while controlling for social desirability bias and race. Participants included 181 undergraduate women, with ages ranging from 18 to 44 years (M = 22.22, SD = 4.53). Regarding racial identification, 28.7% were European American/White, 20.4% were African American/Black, 20.4% were Asian American/Asian, 19.3% were Latino-a/Hispanic, 5.0% were bi-racial or multi-racial, and 6.1% reported "Other." Regarding religious affiliation, 37.6% were Catholic, 34.3% were Protestant, 8.4% reported other religious affiliations, 10.5% reported being Agnostic, and 4.4% reported being Atheist. A questionnaire collected a range of relevant demographic information, the Religious Commitment Inventory-10 (Worthington et al., 2003) measured religious commitment, the Sexual Experiences Survey - Short Form Victimization (Koss et al., 2007) measured ASA, and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (Crowne & Marlowe, 1960) measured social desirability. As a preliminary analysis, MANOVAs were conducted to examine group differences on the dependent variables across socioeconomic status, marital status, dating status, and sexual orientation, the bivariate correlations of the variables were calculated, and an assessment of multicolinearity was performed. The current study examined three main research questions: 1) to what extent religiosity is associated with the two sexual risk taking variables (i.e., sexual risk taking with uncommitted partners and risky sex acts), 2) to what extent ASA is associated with the two sexual risk taking variables, and 3) whether ASA moderates the relationship between religiosity and the two sexual risk taking variables. Two separate hierarchical regression analyses were run and revealed that, after controlling for social desirability, race, and dating status, religiosity, adult sexual assault, and the interaction effect did not contribute a significant amount of unique variance to engagement in sexual risk taking with uncommitted partners. Asian American/Asian and Latino-a/Hispanic race contributed a significant amount of unique variance to this criterion. Results also indicated that dating status and adult sexual assault contributed unique variance to engagement in risky sex acts. Religiosity and the interaction between religiosity and adult sexual assault did not contribute unique variance to this criterion. Implications of the findings regarding the relation of religiosity, adult sexual assault, and sexual risk taking among college women are discussed.

Book Religiosity and Risky Sexual Behaviors in an African American Church Population

Download or read book Religiosity and Risky Sexual Behaviors in an African American Church Population written by Starlyn Montez Hawes and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans are disproportionately burdened by sexually transmitted infections and human immunodeficiency virus in the US. The current study examined relationships between demographics, religiosity, and sexual risk behaviors among 255 sexually active African American church-based participants (mean age = 43; 69% female). Participants were highly religious as evidenced by their report of daily prayer and thoughts of God and twice weekly church attendance and direct experiences with God. Most inconsistently used condoms (85%), and on average participants had seven sex partners in their lifetime. Gender, average monthly income, and medical insurance significantly predicted lifetime HIV-related risk factors (e.g., sex under the influence of substances, trading sex for drugs, homelessness, incarceration). Age and marital status significantly predicted lifetime sex-only behaviors (e.g., number of sex partners, condom use). Also, God consciousness (e.g., religious belief and prayer) significantly predicted sex-only behaviors. Overall, demographic variables were strong predictors of sexual risk behaviors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans remain deeply ambivalent about teenage sexuality. Many presume that such uneasiness is rooted in religion. But how exactly does religion contribute to the formation of teenagers' sexual values and actions? What difference, if any, does religion make in adolescents' sexual attitudes and behaviors? Are abstinence pledges effective? What does it mean to be "emotionally ready" for sex? Who expresses regrets about their sexual activity and why? Tackling these and other questions, Forbidden Fruit tells the definitive story of the sexual values and practices of American teenagers, paying particular attention to how participating in organized religion shapes sexual decision-making. Merging analyses of three national surveys with stories drawn from interviews with over 250 teenagers across America, Mark Regnerus reviews how young people learn-and what they know-about sex from their parents, schools, peers and other sources. He examines what experiences teens profess to have had, and how they make sense of these experiences in light of their own identities as religious, moral, and responsible persons. Religion can and does matter, Regnerus finds, but religious claims are often swamped by other compelling sexual scripts. Particularly interesting is the emergence of what Regnerus calls a new middle class sexual morality which has little to do with a desire for virginity but nevertheless shuns intercourse in order to avoid risks associated with pregnancy and STDs. And strikingly, evangelical teens aren't less sexually active than their non-evangelical counterparts, they just tend to feel guiltier about it. In fact, Regnerus finds that few religious teens have internalized or are even able to articulate the sexual ethic taught by their denominations. The only-and largely ineffective-sexual message most religious teens are getting is, "Don't do it until you're married." Ultimately, Regnerus concludes, religion may influence adolescent sexual behavior, but it rarely motivates sexual decision making.

Book Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles

Download or read book Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles written by Anne M Johnson and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1994-03-30 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of sexual behaviour has been notoriously neglected in social research and there has been no major survey of sexual behaviour since the Kinsey report in the late 1950s. Various social and health problems, including the AIDS epidemic and the increase in teenage pregnancies have recently underlined the need for an up to date and authoritative analysis of current sexual behaviour. Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles is the result of a major statistical survey of the sexual behaviours and attitudes of 20,000 UK citizens, collected by written questionnaires and face to face interviews. It is the most comprehensive and up to date source of information on human sexual behaviour available and the first official UK-based resource ever published.

Book Exploring College Students Relationship with God as a Potential Mediator Between Religious Behaviors and Sexual and Alcohol Risk Behavior Among College Students

Download or read book Exploring College Students Relationship with God as a Potential Mediator Between Religious Behaviors and Sexual and Alcohol Risk Behavior Among College Students written by Erin Whitney Moore and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many college students frequently engage in two behaviors -- sexual activity and alcohol use -- that can potentially lead to significant negative consequences, such as contracting a sexually transmitted infection or personal injury, respectively. College students also tend to be a population with strong religious beliefs and regular engagement in religious behaviors. Some research indicates that more frequent engagement in religious behavior is associated with less risky behavior (e.g., initiation of sex, fewer sexual partners, decreased alcohol use) among college students. However, previous research is mixed on why this association exists. The current study explored "relationship with God" as a religious construct that potentially mediates the relationship between religious behaviors and alcohol and sexual risk behaviors (lifetime and last 3 months). The sample consisted of 406 University of Missouri-Kansas City students. Data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics Version 19 and AMOS Version 18. Findings indicated participants' increased engagement in religious behaviors was significantly associated with stronger beliefs that God influenced their alcohol use decision-making, which was in turn, associated with less alcohol use in the last three months. This finding suggested that God control beliefs partially mediated the protective relationship between religious behaviors and recent alcohol use. There were no significant relationships between relationship with God variables and lifetime alcohol use and lifetime or recent sexual risk. Future research should continue to explore this area with larger samples that allow for sex and race/ethnicity comparisons regarding relationship with God and risk behavior. Interventions for reducing college students' alcohol use may consider incorporating messages that discuss God control beliefs.

Book Religiousity Moral Disapproval Shame and Pornography Use

Download or read book Religiousity Moral Disapproval Shame and Pornography Use written by Ryan Carboneau and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many compulsive and hypersexualized behaviors, including pornography use, have been associated with negative emotional, neurological, and psychosocial problems in a subset of users. Research showed that the constructs of shame, shame-proneness, and attachment may be related to the use of pornography as well as the theory of addiction. Shame-proneness is a construct that is consistently and positively associated with a variety of internalizing symptoms including depression, social, and generalized anxiety as well as a linked to an assortment of externalizing and risky behaviors such as anger, substance use, and criminal offending. Research suggested that higher levels of religiosity have a strong relationship to the moral disapproval of the use of pornography based on individual religious beliefs. This study examined the correlation between religiosity and sexual shame based on earlier research, which hypothesized that moral disapproval would mediate the relationship between religiosity and sexual shame. This research also hypothesized that shame-proneness would moderate the relationships between religiosity and moral disapproval, moral disapproval, and sexual shame, and finally the relationship between religiosity and sexual shame. The results showed that consistent with earlier research; moral disapproval mediated the relationship between religiosity and sexual shame. The study found that shame-proneness was a direct predictor of sexual shame however it did not moderate direct or indirect effects on the proposed theoretical relationships.
