Book excerpt: The effect of different rest intervals (1, 3, and 5 minutes) on countermovement jump variables (jump height, peak power, and rate of force development) was assessed in experienced collegiate jumpers (n = 14; 20.42 ± 1.55 years; 64.74 ± 10.10 kg). The participants completed four testing sessions in which they completed maximal countermovement jumps separated by a randomized rest interval (1, 3, and 5 minutes). A factorial repeated measures analysis of variance (RMANOVA) demonstrated a statistically significant mean difference when comparing the change in jump height from jump 1 to jump 2, versus the change in jump height from jump 3 to jump 4 (p = 0.044). Furthermore, a statistically significant mean difference was shown comparing the change in peak power (p = 0.049) from jump 1 to jump 2 versus jump 3 to jump 4. Based on a one-way repeated measures analysis of variance, a statistically significant mean difference (p = 0.043) for the total change in jump height (jumps 1-4) was found comparing the one minute versus the three-minute rest intervals. A statistically significant mean difference (p = 0.021) was found comparing the total change in peak power (jumps 1-4) for the one-minute rest interval versus the five-minute rest interval. Based on the results of the study, varying the rest intervals had a statistically significant impact on jump height and peak power.

Book excerpt: Purpose: to examine the relationship between isometric force characteristics (IF) and vertical jump height under various loading conditions. Sixty-three collegiate athletes participated in this investigation. Athletes performed static jump (SJ) and countermovement jumps (CMJ) with 0 and 20kg, and isometric mid-thigh pulls on a force plate. Force-time curve analysis was conducted for each isometric pull and jump to determine force related characteristics. Jump height (JH) was derived from flight time. Isometric forces were normalized using allometric scaling: absolute force/ (body mass(kg)0.67)= IPFa. Results: There was a strong positive correlation between isometric peak force and isometric rate of force development (IRFD). Stronger athletes had smaller decrements in jump height with additional loading. Conclusion: The ability to produce higher peak and instantaneous forces and IRFD is related to JH and smaller differences between weighted and unweighted jumps. A weighted jump may be a practical method of assessing relative strength levels.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of static, counter movement, and drop jump performance on peak power and peak rate of force development (RFD). The secondary purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between vertical jump outcomes, maturity offset, and muscle cress-sectional area (CSA). During a single testing session, twenty-one young males (mean age ± SD = 12.1 ± 2.4 yrs) performed maximal vertical jumps which included: static jump (SJ), counter movement jump (CMJ), and drop jump from 8 (DJ8), 12 (DJ12) and 16 (DJ16) inches in a randomized order. Peak power increased from SJ to CMJ (p ≤ 0.001) but showed no subsequent increases among CMJ, DJ8, DJ12, or DJ16. RFD and force showed no increase from SJ to CMJ (p > 0.05), an increase from CMJ to DJ8 (p ≤ 0.001), but no further increases from DJ8 to DJ12 to DJ16 (p > 0.05). Eccentric impulse increased systematically from SJ to DJ16 (p ≤ 0.001). Concentric impulse increased from SJ to CMJ (p ≤ 0.001), decreased from CMJ to DJ8 (p = 0.003), then showed no change from DJ8 to DJ12 to DJ16 (p > 0.05). Stepwise regression indicated that the increase in power from SJ to CMJ was best explained by height (R2 = 0.517). These findings suggest CMJ is the optimal jump test for maximizing peak power and concentric work, while minimizing eccentric overload in male of a similar age to this study. Additionally, growth and development may influence stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) utilization. Future studies are needed to examine the influence of PHV maturity offset and increased muscle CSA on SSC utilization in this model of incremental eccentric pre-loading during vertical jump tests.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of differing loads on landing kinetics on land, and in aquatic conditions. Twenty four NCAA DI athletes volunteered for this study twelve female soccer players and twelve female gymnasts. Participants performed three jumps with four differing external loads in both land and aquatic environments. External loads were body weight (BW), BW*1.1, BW*1.2, BW*1.3 and applied via a weighted vest. All external loads for both conditions were added based upon participants BW on land. Kinetic measures were peak force, rate of force development, and impulse of the landing phase of the plyometric countermovement jump. Data was collected via waterproof force-plate. Results were analyzed using a three-way repeated measures 2x2x4 ANOVA. There was no significant difference in any result based on sport. Aquatic environments reduced peak impact by 50.7%, rate of force development by 53.5%, and impulse by 38.6%. Increasing external load did not produce significant differences for impact peak force or rate of force development, but did produce significantly higher impact impulse for land based jumps (p=0.000). In an aquatic environment increasing load produced significant differences in all three kinetic values. The results for environment agree with previous studies. The results for loaded aquatic countermovement jumps in this study show increased landing kinetics over unloaded aquatic jumps, and decreased landing kinetics over unloaded land jumps. Adding external load in aquatic environments may utilized to increase landing kinetics, while remaining under kinetic values of land based plyometrics.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine if an isometric quarter squat was sufficient to elicit postactivation potentiation (PAP) in a countermovement jump (CMJ) for recreationally trained individuals (n = 22). The isometric quarter squat conditioning stimulus consisted of three sets of six second maximal voluntary contractions against a custom made apparatus. The conditioning stimulus was designed to acutely enhance CMJ performance by stimulating PAP, in turn improving indicators of CMJ performance which included eccentric rate of force development (ERFD), mean rate of force development (MRFD), peak rate of force development (PRFD), reactive strength index (RSI), and peak power (PP). CMJ performance was tested at one, five, ten, and fifteen minutes post-conditioning stimulus to identify the optimal recovery time for optimal performance. Statistical analysis was carried out using a two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and no significant or meaningful change was found in ERFD, MRFD, PRFD, RSI, or PP. The overall power was small for all variables suggesting that the ability of the current study to observe an effect that might have existed was very unlikely. Effect size was also small in all variables suggesting that the change pre to post-testing was not meaningful. Some critical factors that may have contributed to the results included the individual's ability to potentiate, body positioning during conditioning stimulus, and level of conditioning of subjects.
