Book Relationship Between Personality Traits of the Urban Poor Concerning Solid Waste Management and Household Income and Education

Download or read book Relationship Between Personality Traits of the Urban Poor Concerning Solid Waste Management and Household Income and Education written by Md Wahid Murad and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the relationship between knowledge, attitude, and behaviour of the urban poor householders concerning solid waste management systems and monthly household income and education. To attain the objective, the study employed statistical techniques such as t-tests of equality of means, one-way ANOVA, x2 "likelihood ratio" test and simple descriptive statistics. The findings show that the urban poor communities with low income and education have been proven to behave in ways matching with and conducive to environment-friendly solid waste management, for instance, by practicing recycling and waste source reduction. This study also proves that the urban low-income communities generally have a very proactive role from a sound environmental management perspective, as they are the main recyclers and source-reducers of solid waste. The study suggests that policies should be formulated to focus on promoting knowledge, education, skills, and empowerment of the urban poor as means of promoting their living conditions.

Book Economic Shocks and Personality Traits of the Ultra Poor

Download or read book Economic Shocks and Personality Traits of the Ultra Poor written by Shikhar Mehra and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personality characteristics and non-cognitive skills are strong determinants of decision- making and economic outcomes. Personality is commonly believed to be stable, especially after age 30, though some evidence exists that changes in occupational or social roles, or exposure to family or health shocks, can change an individual's personality traits in the medium or long term. Evidence on short-term impacts of shocks on personality, however, is lacking, as is evidence from rural and less educated populations. In this paper, we study the short-term effects of two kinds of shocks on personality traits among young adults from ultra-poor households in Uganda. In particular, we examine experimentally the impact of an income-generating asset distribution as well as a particular climate shock-recent exposure to drought-on Big Five personality traits. We find that the poverty graduation program significantly increased scores on traits that represent socialization and stability by up to 0.21 standard deviations while drought decreased scores on these traits by up to 0.26 standard deviations. However, these shocks did not have a discernible effect on traits that represent personal growth and plasticity. These results add to a growing literature on the psychology of poverty, which suggests that various psychological variables are endogenous to poverty and that economic interventions can alter psychology and improve non-cognitive skills.

Book How Does Household Income Affect Child Personality Traits and Behaviors

Download or read book How Does Household Income Affect Child Personality Traits and Behaviors written by Randall Kekoa Quinones Akee and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing research has investigated the effect of early childhood educational interventions on the child's later-life outcomes. These studies have found limited impact of supplementary programs on children's cognitive skills, but sustained effects on personality traits. We examine how a positive change in unearned household income affects children's emotional and behavioral health and personality traits. Our results indicate that there are large beneficial effects of improved household financial wellbeing on children's emotional and behavioral health and positive personality trait development. Moreover, we find that these effects are most pronounced for children who are lagging behind their peers in these measures before the intervention. Increasing household incomes reduce differences across adolescents with different levels of initial emotional-behavioral symptoms and personality traits. We also examine potential channels through which the increased household income may contribute to these positive changes. Parenting and relationships within the family appear to be an important mechanism. We also find evidence that a sub-sample of the population moves to census tracts with better income levels and educational attainment.

This book was released on 2022-08-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION "We are all environmentalists now. We are all committed to environment." (Glaeser, 2007) Garbage as an issue has taken the central place in contemporary globalization debates. Garbage circulates globally in an involuntary manner as revealed in the ecological reports on the tons of debris (mainly plastic) floating around the world ocean (Derraik 2002). It circulates as elimination from various countries as elimination, as international garbage management and disposal programs. Also it can be seen circulating as a commodity, where garbage is sold and bought for recycling purposes and for extraction of the raw material. Of course, garbage, trash and waste are not the same things: the ethical and affective attributes referred to these words are of very different conceptual discourse. Trash is something that is, rendered invisible, refused and needs to be removed as quickly as possible. There is little or no ethical dimension to refuse as is also talked about by many cultural philosophers. But waste is a whole different dimension; it is a scarce resource that is deployed irresponsibly. It is an ethical category raising an entire edifice of morality, from thrift to religious injunction. It is what we decide is waste which will decide our future course of destiny. Many researches show that the individual living in urban areas/ cities produce solid waste four times as much as the individual living in villages/ countryside (Hoornweg et. al. 2013). United Nation in 2014 reported that more than half of the world population is living in cities, which shows that urban population growth will out space waste management efforts in near future (Hoornweg et. al. 2013). This reason advocates selecting cities as the key places for experimentation with strategies for waste management. One needs to,

Book Pathways to Urban Sustainability

Download or read book Pathways to Urban Sustainability written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities have experienced an unprecedented rate of growth in the last decade. More than half the world's population lives in urban areas, with the U.S. percentage at 80 percent. Cities have captured more than 80 percent of the globe's economic activity and offered social mobility and economic prosperity to millions by clustering creative, innovative, and educated individuals and organizations. Clustering populations, however, can compound both positive and negative conditions, with many modern urban areas experiencing growing inequality, debility, and environmental degradation. The spread and continued growth of urban areas presents a number of concerns for a sustainable future, particularly if cities cannot adequately address the rise of poverty, hunger, resource consumption, and biodiversity loss in their borders. Intended as a comparative illustration of the types of urban sustainability pathways and subsequent lessons learned existing in urban areas, this study examines specific examples that cut across geographies and scales and that feature a range of urban sustainability challenges and opportunities for collaborative learning across metropolitan regions. It focuses on nine cities across the United States and Canada (Los Angeles, CA, New York City, NY, Philadelphia, PA, Pittsburgh, PA, Grand Rapids, MI, Flint, MI, Cedar Rapids, IA, Chattanooga, TN, and Vancouver, Canada), chosen to represent a variety of metropolitan regions, with consideration given to city size, proximity to coastal and other waterways, susceptibility to hazards, primary industry, and several other factors.

Book Household Waste Management

Download or read book Household Waste Management written by Marianna Gilli and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys existing literature from both waste management and behavioural sciences to offer a complete overview of how economic agents relate to a central matter in the policy making agenda: that of waste prevention and recycling. Environmental behavioural economics is a growing field of research, yet investigation in this area concentrates mostly on energy savings or pollution reduction. The authors highlight the importance of the role of waste management, analysing the effect of monetary and non-monetary incentives and motivations, and explores the complex interplay between motivations, recycling, minimisation and waste policies to affect consumer behaviour. This book will be of interest to researchers and policy-makers in the fields of waste management and environmental economics.
