Book excerpt: The purpose of this exploratory study was to measure the cultural competence of nurse educators in accredited baccalaureate (BSN) nursing programs in Tennessee (TN) and investigate the relationship, if any, between nurse educatorsâ cultural competence and the percentage of minority nursing students recruited into and graduated from these schools in the previous 5 years. With the rapid rise of the minority population in the United States, more minority healthcare providers, including nurses, are needed to provide culturally congruent care in underserved communities. Literature has implied that nurse educatorsâ lack of cultural competence and sensitivity regarding minority nursing studentsâ educational needs could be a contributing factor to minority nursesâ underrepresentation. Nurse educators in 9 accredited colleges of nursing in TN completed the âCultural Diversity Questionnaire for Nurse Educators.â Some of the participating schools and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Research Data Center provided the percentage of students recruited and graduated in each school by ethnicity. 3 The findings revealed that the majority of respondents were at least moderately culturally competent. There was no correlation between Tennessee schools' mean cultural competence scores and their percentages of minority students recruited into BSN programs in the past 5 years. But there was a significant statistical correlation between Tennessee schools' mean cultural competence scores and their percentages of minority students graduated from BSN programs in the past 5 years (p = .015). There was a statistically significant difference between the mean cultural competence score of respondents who had lived in a culture different from the United States and those who had not (p = .01). There was also a statistically significant difference between the mean cultural competence score of respondents who had attended multicultural education seminars in the past 5 years and those wh.

Book excerpt: The recruitment of diverse nurse faculty fosters culturally competent teaching, role modeling of cultural awareness, and mentorship for diverse nursing students. However, with regard to the evolution of New York City's diversity, the nursing profession has historically failed to parallel the societal transformation. This researcher investigated nursing education's past in regard to race and ethnicity through the historical case study of one of New York City's first schools established to educate Black women in nursing arts, namely, the Lincoln School for Nurses of the Bronx, New York. The lack of diversity within nursing is not an issue that developed overnight. Deficiencies of diverse nurse educators have been associated with decreased numbers of enrolled minority students, insufficient percentages of minority nursing staff, and the negative stimuli on healthcare that stemmed from unconscious biases and healthcare disparities. This researcher employed the historical research method and accessed archival materials (both primary and secondary sources) to study the Lincoln School for Nurses.

International migrants are entering our borders in record numbers in hopes to build brighter futures for themselves and forthcoming generations. If current demographic trends continue, by the end of the 21st century, non-Hispanic Whites will no longer represent the mainstream population. In the midst of changes in our population come changes in the spectrum of health care consumers. Minority populations are known to experience higher rates of illness, disease, disability, and mortality. Considering these factors, it can be concluded that minority groups constitute a substantial percentage of health care patrons. Therefore, it is critical for all schools of nursing to focus on the topic of diversity throughout curricula. In order to graduate nursing students who are prepared to deliver culturally competent services in professional health care vocations, it is essential for educators to provide students with abundant opportunities in nursing programs to expand their knowledge and understanding of intercultural differences, strengthen intercultural abilities, and heighten their personal awareness of diverse cultures. For the purposes of this study, levels of self-reported cultural competence among sophomore, junior, and senior nursing students, as well as nursing faculty members at Kent State University at Stark College of Nursing (KSU-S CON) will be evaluated. Thus, the following research questions will be assessed: How effective do sophomore nursing students, junior nursing students, senior nursing students, and nursing faculty feel they are in delivering competent care to patients of diverse backgrounds? Furthermore, could the KSU-S CON improve the current educational nursing curricula by developing a more extensive domain devoted to transcultural nursing?
