Book Mechanism Dependent Fractal Character of Fracture Surfaces in High Strength and Toughness ASTM A723 Steels

Download or read book Mechanism Dependent Fractal Character of Fracture Surfaces in High Strength and Toughness ASTM A723 Steels written by Peter McAnulty and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fractal character of fracture surfaces of thick-walled pressure vessels produced in the final fast fracture that terminates low cycle fatigue tests is compared with that of fracture surfaces produced in Charpy impact tests in samples of the same high strength and toughness steel (ASTM A723) alloy. Slit island analysis yielded fractal dimensions near 1.25 for the Charpy specimens, which is typical of high strength steel alloys previously studied, however, extremely high fractal dimensions near 1.40 were determined for the low cycle fatigue specimens. The distributions of island and lake areas and of island and lake perimeters on random sections exhibit hyperbolic distributions analogous to those found for geographic islands and lakes. Hyperbolic distributions, Fractal dimension, Slit Island method, Fracture steel.

Book Measurement and Interpretation of Fracture Surface Fractal Dimension

Download or read book Measurement and Interpretation of Fracture Surface Fractal Dimension written by W. Drury and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of fractals in the analysis of fracture surfaces is increasingly being investigated in the hope that this concept may provide a means of characterizing these complex irregular surfaces. While the preliminary experimental evidence is interesting and encouraging, questions concerning the correct measurement and interpretation of fracture surface fractal dimension remain. This paper seeks to address these issues to the extent possible. In particular, it is noted that currently accepted techniques for measuring surface fractal dimension are flawed, and a new alternate technique based on vertical section profilometry is proposed. Important aspects of this new technique are that it is assumption-free and the required data are obtained by standard methods involving reasonable operator effort. Finally, possible interpretations of fractal results are briefly discussed, focusing on potential advantages of use of the entire "fractal plot" for developing a clearer understanding of surface geometry and the role of microstructure in the failure event.

Book Analysis of Fracture Toughness Mechanism in Ultra fine grained Steels

Download or read book Analysis of Fracture Toughness Mechanism in Ultra fine grained Steels written by Toshihiro Hanamura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, advanced steel technologies mainly developed at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, for structure control, mechanical properties, and the related mechanisms are introduced and discussed. NIMS has long worked on developing advanced steel techniques, namely, producing advanced steels by using only simple alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, and silicon, and also by utilizing steel scrap. The hope is that this approach will lead to a technology of a so-called steel-to-steel recycling process, with the ultimate goal of a recycling process such as an automotive-steel-to-automotive-steel recycling process to take the place of the current cascade-type recycling system. The main idea is to utilize ultra-grain refining structures and hetero structures as well as martensite structures. In particular, the focus of this book is on tensile strength and toughness of advanced steels from both the fundamental and engineering points of view. Fundamentally, a unique approach to analysis is taken, based on fracture surface energy as effective grain size is employed to better understand the mechanism of property improvement. From the engineering point of view, in fracture toughness such factors as crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of advanced steels are evaluated in comparison with those of conventional steels.

Book Fracture Toughness Testing

Download or read book Fracture Toughness Testing written by John E. Srawley and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey is presented of current methods of fracture toughness testing that are based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. General principles are discussed in relation to the basic two-dimensional crack stress field model and in relation to real three-dimensional specimens. The designs and necessary dimensions of specimens for mixed mode and opening mode (plane strain) crack toughness measurement are considered in detail. Methods of test instrumentation and procedure are described. Expressions for the calculation of crack toughness values are given for the common types of specimens.

Book Effects of Sulfur Content on the Plain Strain Fracture Toughness of Inertia Welds in 4340 Steel

Download or read book Effects of Sulfur Content on the Plain Strain Fracture Toughness of Inertia Welds in 4340 Steel written by William S. Ricci and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plain strain fracture toughness of post-weld, reheat treated inertia welds in two heats of AISI 4340 steel of equivalent tensile properties, but different sulfur concentrations, was determined. The adverse reorientation of elongated sulfide inclusions in both heats, resultant from the forging stage of the welding cycle, caused reductions in ductility and toughness that were not remedied by reheat treatments. The percent elongation of inertia welded joints was found to be no greater than 50% that of the parent metal even at the lowest sulfur concentrations of 0.004%. KIC data was less significantly effected by sulfur concentration and fiber morphology. In addition, the fracture toughness of these welds in 0.014% S material, as determined from sharp notch fatigue cracked specimens, was actually found to be greater than that of welds in 0.004% S material. This was due to the more tortuous fracture path and the resultant greater fracture surface formed during crack propagation. L-C rather than L-R crack plane orientations for KIC specimens produced more reliable mechanical property data due to the more uniform microstructure ahead of the crack front. The magnitude of base metal elongation, especially in the short transverse orientation, is proposed as an index of inertia/friction weldability.
