Book THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN PARENTAL ALCOHOL USE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENT ALCOHOL USE

Download or read book THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN PARENTAL ALCOHOL USE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENT ALCOHOL USE written by Cassandra Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent alcohol use is a serious problem that has negative consequences for youths' well-being. To inform policy makers and practitioners, researchers have identified factors related to adolescent drinking. Although past research has found that maternal excessive alcohol use and parenting practices are strong predictors of adolescent alcohol use, most studies used cross sectional data and rarely examined the influence of maternal alcohol use and parenting practices during early childhood on adolescents' alcohol use. Using the Year 3 and Year 15 interviews from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS), this project extends past research by longitudinally examining the association between excessive maternal alcohol use during early childhood and adolescents' alcohol use at age 15 with special attention to the role of two aspects of mothers' parenting practices-engagement and warmth. The findings suggest that maternal excessive alcohol use, but not moderate alcohol use, in early childhood is related to adolescents' alcohol use at age 15. Maternal warmth and engagement in early childhood were not significantly related to adolescents' alcohol use; and controlling for these types of parenting practices did not change the association between maternal excessive alcohol use in early childhood and adolescents' alcohol use. When controlling for race, education, number of children, employment status, and marital status, the association was reduced. Adolescents' current school problems and parents' current drinking were both associated with adolescents' alcohol use; and when parental current drinking was controlled for, the effects of maternal excessive drinking in early childhood on adolescent drinking were not significant. These findings suggest that the influence of maternal excessive alcohol use in early childhood on adolescent alcohol use seems to be indirect through increased the odds that adolescents have primary caregivers who drink excessively. Interventions for mothers with young children who drink excessively are warranted.

Book excerpt: This report highlights some of the key learnings about human development from the Australian Temperament Project (ATP) - a groundbreaking longitudinal study that, to date, has followed a large group of Victorians from their birth to age 30 years. ATP is a joint project between the Australian Institute of Family Studies, the Royal Children's Hospital, the University of Melbourne and Deakin University and is one of only a few in the world with information on three generations of study members - the young people, their parents, and now the young people's own children.

Book The Influence of Parenting Style on Adolescent Substance Use

Download or read book The Influence of Parenting Style on Adolescent Substance Use written by Matin Ghayour Minaie and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many interventions to prevent adolescent alcohol and drug problems recognise the importance of working with families. This thesis investigates the influence of parenting styles on the development of adolescent substance use in Australia, and whether these influences are different for families from varied ethnicity backgrounds. The thesis is comprised of three empirical studies analysing a large longitudinal cohort study of 2,000 young people starting secondary school in Victoria. The thesis also examines Baumrind's 1989 proposition that: parent behaviours can be categorised to identify groups of parents with distinct parenting styles; and authoritative parenting styles predict fewer adolescent development problems, specifically less early alcohol and illicit drug use.

Book Adolescent Drinking and Family Life

Download or read book Adolescent Drinking and Family Life written by Geoff Lowe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, Adolescent Drinking and Family Life portrays teenage drinking, not as a symptom of pathology, but as a perfectly normal developmental phase within the context of the home environment. Drinking is predominantly social behaviour and the family is seen as a major agent of socialization. The authors have therefore explored family dynamics and the influence which the home environment has upon adolescent drinking to come up with a new theoretical model. A major feature of this approach is the interaction of ideas from family life psychology and human geography. The authors present a typology of domestic regimes illustrated by case studies of boundary enforcement and transgression. The general theme of boundary transgression, applied here to both the psychosocial environment and built form, represents an interesting new theoretical perspective. The integration of these two fields is an innovation which should stimulate further interdisciplinary work in adolescence and addiction research. Adolescent Drinking and Family Life will be interesting to researchers and practitioners in adolescence, family dynamics, and alcohol as well as any social scientist with an interest in the link between behaviour and the home environment. This new approach had important implications for health education and for interventions concerned with adolescent alcohol use at the time. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Adolescent Substance Abuse

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Adolescent Substance Abuse written by Robert A. Zucker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent substance abuse is the nation's #1 public health problem. It originates out of a developmental era where experimentation with the world is increasingly taking place, and where major changes in physical self and social relationships are taking place. These changes cannot be understood by any one discipline nor can they be described by focusing only on the behavioral and social problems of this age period, the characteristics of normal development, or the pharmacology and addictive potential of specific drugs. They require knowledge of the brain's systems of reward and control, genetics, psychopharmacology, personality, child development, psychopathology, family dynamics, peer group relationships, culture, social policy, and more. Drawing on the expertise of the leading researchers in this field, this Handbook provides the most comprehensive summarization of current knowledge about adolescent substance abuse. The Handbook is organized into eight sections covering the literature on the developmental context of this life period, the epidemiology of adolescent use and abuse, similarities and differences in use, addictive potential, and consequences of use for different drugs; etiology and course as characterized at different levels of mechanistic analysis ranging from the genetic and neural to the behavioural and social. Two sections cover the clinical ramifications of abuse, and prevention and intervention strategies to most effectively deal with these problems. The Handbook's last section addresses the role of social policy in framing the problem, in addressing it, and explores its potential role in alleviating it.

Book Depression in Parents Parenting and Children

Download or read book Depression in Parents Parenting and Children written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-10-28 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depression is a widespread condition affecting approximately 7.5 million parents in the U.S. each year and may be putting at least 15 million children at risk for adverse health outcomes. Based on evidentiary studies, major depression in either parent can interfere with parenting quality and increase the risk of children developing mental, behavioral and social problems. Depression in Parents, Parenting, and Children highlights disparities in the prevalence, identification, treatment, and prevention of parental depression among different sociodemographic populations. It also outlines strategies for effective intervention and identifies the need for a more interdisciplinary approach that takes biological, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social contexts into consideration. A major challenge to the effective management of parental depression is developing a treatment and prevention strategy that can be introduced within a two-generation framework, conducive for parents and their children. Thus far, both the federal and state response to the problem has been fragmented, poorly funded, and lacking proper oversight. This study examines options for widespread implementation of best practices as well as strategies that can be effective in diverse service settings for diverse populations of children and their families. The delivery of adequate screening and successful detection and treatment of a depressive illness and prevention of its effects on parenting and the health of children is a formidable challenge to modern health care systems. This study offers seven solid recommendations designed to increase awareness about and remove barriers to care for both the depressed adult and prevention of effects in the child. The report will be of particular interest to federal health officers, mental and behavioral health providers in diverse parts of health care delivery systems, health policy staff, state legislators, and the general public.

Book New Directions and Trends in Parenting Research

Download or read book New Directions and Trends in Parenting Research written by Nicolette Vanessa Roman and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-08-28 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many decades, parenting has been at the center of interest for practitioners and researchers interested in child social and psychological development. The body of research on children’s socialization has primarily focused on traditional parenting styles and their related practices in the spirit of Baumrind’s and others’ conceptualization of parental control and power assertion (e.g. authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive). This research has revealed many domains of children’s and adolescents’ adjustment and wellbeing that are affected by and affecting parenting quality, but intriguing new parental approaches and types have recently emerged in research literature, such as digital parenting, transcendent parenting, parental alienation, overparenting/helicopter parenting, tiger parenting, and several others, about which more is yet to be learned. Likewise, in recent years, our understanding of the role played by factors such as culture/ethnicity, environmental, and familial background in the relationship between parenting styles and children’s psychological wellbeing and mental health has greatly improved. However, the question of whether or not there is a global, uniform optimal parenting remains controversial, as more studies are required to better understand the varying impacts of parenting on the child’s well-being within different demographic and familial contexts. This is especially true for families with special needs children (i.e., children and adolescents with developmental and psychological disabilities), where research on parenting styles, in particular, is understudied. Additionally, in the present digital era, there is growing interested in relatively new behavioral outcomes in children and adolescents, such as sedentary behaviors, including eating and nutrition habits, online behaviors, and digital activity vs. physical activity. These and other important contemporary aspects in children’s functioning and behaviors contribute to developmental mental health, and further establishing our knowledge regarding the parental role in these contexts is essential.

Book Hostile coercive Parenting Adolescent Deviant Behavior Affiliation with Peers who Drink and Adolescent Alcohol Use

Download or read book Hostile coercive Parenting Adolescent Deviant Behavior Affiliation with Peers who Drink and Adolescent Alcohol Use written by George V. Estonactoc and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the interrelationships of parent-adolescent relational quality, adolescent behavior, and peer affiliation, and their relative contributions to adolescent alcohol use. It was hypothesized that adolescents with hostile-coercive relationships with their parents are more likely to use alcohol, associate with peers who drink, and engage in deviant behaviors. In addition, adolescents who associate with peer who drink are more likely to use alcohol. Adolescents who report deviant behavior are more likely to associate with peers who drink and use alcohol. Several mediational relationships were investigated. Specifically, it was hypothesized that the relationship between parent-adolescent relational quality and alcohol use is mediated by adolescent deviant behavior. Peer association also was expected to mediate the relationship between parent-adolescent relational quality and alcohol use. Finally, it was predicted that the relationship between parent-adolescent relational quality and peer association is mediated by adolescent deviant behavior. Participants were 206 early adolescent boys ranging in age from 12 to 15 and recruited from two public schools within the greater Los Angeles area. Eighty-nine fathers and 105 mothers also participated in the study. Participants completed several questionnaires regarding parent-adolescent relational quality and adolescent deviant behavior. Analyses revealed significant correlations between relational quality, adolescent deviant behavior, peer affiliation and adolescent alcohol use. Through multiple regression analyses, evidence was found to support the prediction that peer affiliation and adolescent deviant behavior mediates the relationship between parent-adolescent relational quality and adolescent alcohol use. Supplemental analyses suggested that parent monitoring mediates the relationship between parent-adolescent relational quality and peer affiliation, as well as parent-adolescent relational quality and adolescent alcohol use. Findings were discussed with respect to clinical implications, limitations, and implications for future research.
