This book was released on 2017-09-10 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations of Shirley's Plays to the Elizabethan Drama I have based my study upon the gifford-dyce edition. The early quartos and duodecimos of Shirley's plays are generally so scarce as to preclude their use by many schol ars; and as my treatment of the plays has had to do chiefly with the action and but little with the text itself, I have thought it best to use and to refer to the more accessible (though unsatisfactory) collected edition. I wish to call attention to the fact that in my citations of acts and scenes I have referred to the numbers at their beginnings, and not to those at the tops of the respective pages which are often incorrect. Book James Shirley and Early Modern Theatre

Download or read book James Shirley and Early Modern Theatre written by Barbara Ravelhofer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Shirley was the last great dramatist of the English Renaissance, shining out among other luminaries such as John Ford, Ben Jonson, or Richard Brome. This collection considers Shirley within the culture of his time, and highlights his contribution to seventeenth-century English literature as poet and playwright. Individual essays explore Shirley’s musical theatre and spoken verse, performance conditions, female agency and politics, and the presentation of his work in manuscript and print. Collectively, the essays assemble a larger picture of Caroline drama, showing it to be more than simply a nostalgic endgame, its poets daintily sipping hemlock on the eve of the Civil Wars. Shirley’s literary versatility and long life, spanning the last days of Queen Elizabeth I to the ascension of Charles II, make him an ideal writer through whom to examine the distinctive qualities of Caroline theatre.

Book excerpt: This book redefines the plays and theatrical culture of the years 1625 to 1642 as something more than simply post-Shakespearean in character. They urge us to recalibrate our histories to account for the innovations of the Caroline period.

Book Community Making in Early Stuart Theatres

Download or read book Community Making in Early Stuart Theatres written by Anthony W. Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-two leading experts on early modern drama collaborate in this volume to explore three closely interconnected research questions. To what extent did playwrights represent dramatis personae in their entertainments as forming, or failing to form, communal groupings? How far were theatrical productions likely to weld, or separate, different communal groupings within their target audiences? And how might such bondings or oppositions among spectators have tallied with the community-making or -breaking on stage? Chapters in Part One respond to one or more of these questions by reassessing general period trends in censorship, theatre attendance, forms of patronage, playwrights’ professional and linguistic networks, their use of music, and their handling of ethical controversies. In Part Two, responses arise from detailed re-examinations of particular plays by Shakespeare, Chapman, Jonson, Beaumont and Fletcher, Cary, Webster, Middleton, Massinger, Ford, and Shirley. Both Parts cover a full range of early-Stuart theatre settings, from the public and popular to the more private circumstances of hall playhouses, court masques, women’s drama, country-house theatricals, and school plays. And one overall finding is that, although playwrights frequently staged or alluded to communal conflict, they seldom exacerbated such divisiveness within their audience. Rather, they tended toward more tactful modes of address (sometimes even acknowledging their own ideological uncertainties) so that, at least for the duration of a play, their audiences could be a community within which internal rifts were openly brought into dialogue.

Book A Critical Old spelling Edition of The Birth of Merlin Q 1662

Download or read book A Critical Old spelling Edition of The Birth of Merlin Q 1662 written by Joanna Udall and published by MHRA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Credited on its first title page to William Shakespeare and William Rowley, The Birth of Merlin continues to provoke speculation about its place in the Shakespeare 'Apocrypha'. The play is an imaginative re-working of the story of Merlin the Magician and his part in the struggle against the Saxon invasion of Britain. It contains not only scenes of love, war, and court politics, but a devil, a clown, and an unusual number of spectacular stage effects. This edition seeks to provide contexts for the play's diverse elements (chronicle history, romance, spectacle, and comedy), and considers its relationships with a wide variety of texts from Geoffrey of Monmouth and the English prose Brut to Shakespeare's Henry VIII.
