Book excerpt: To increase timber production and manage other forest resource values, some land managers have undertaken logging debris and vegetation control treatments after forest harvest. We explored the roles of clearcutting on plant community composition and structure at three sites where logging debris was dispersed, piled, or removed and vegetation was annually treated or not treated with herbicides for 5 years. Without vegetation control, a competitive relation was identified between exotic and native ruderal (i.e., disturbance-associated) species. When exotic ruderal cover changed by 4 percent, native ruderal cover changed by 10 percent in the opposite direction. This relation was independent of site, but site was important in determining the overall dominance of ruderals. Five annual vegetation control treatments increased Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) growth, but decreased richness and cover of other species at the rate of one species per 10 percent reduction in cover. Debris treatment effects were small and found on only one site.

Book excerpt: Invasive plants are widely cited as a major threat to native plant communities, and the correlation between plant invasions and a subsequent decline in native species is well documented at some scales. However, one outstanding question is the degree to which invasive species are a driver of native plant declines versus a correlate of other drivers, such as habitat disturbance. These two hypotheses to explain the dominance of invasive species in communities have been termed the 'driver' and 'passenger' models, respectively. In order to understand the impacts of plant invasion on native plants we need more studies that consider the role of correlated environmental predictors, which may play unseen roles in the response and recovery of native plant communities frequently attributed to invasion alone. Using a large database of plant community and environmental data from sites across Southern Ontario, I used path analyses to examine the direct and indirect relationships between disturbance, exotic and native plant richness, and relative abundance. Counter to my initial predictions, I found support for both the partial passenger and partial driver models of invasive dominance, while full passenger models were outright rejected. The causal hypotheses consistent with the data indicated significant relationships between native and exotic species richness and native and exotic relative abundance across models. An exploratory analysis, which examined species-specific models, found that the data was consistent with seven out of twelve causal hypotheses. Models that could not be rejected were split almost evenly across full passenger, partial passenger, and partial driver models. Model support varied according to the species included in the dataset suggesting that the best fit underlying model of invasive dominance likely varies by species. While the partial passenger and partial driver models were recurrently consistent with the data, no single model described the underlying patterns of invasive dominance across all systems.

There are a lot of people doing research on saproxylic beetles in different countries of the world, but this seems to be a little bit disorganized. Hopefully, these European conferences will lead to a better, more international network. The contributions included in this volume cover a broad spectrum of research on saproxylic beetles, organized in three main chapters: "Saproxylic beetle assemblages and regional surveys" include "Oaks in Norway," showing the abundance and composition of red-listed species of beetles in hollow oaks. Further reports on regional surveys deals with a spruce primeval forest in Romania, a hardwood floodplain forest in the Czech Republic, and the Gartow region of Lower Saxony, a hotspot of saproxylic beetle diversity in north-western Germany. "Saproxylic beetle ecology and implications for their conservation" deals with ecological studies of single species, e.g. Limoniscus violaceus, Lucanus cervus, Osmoderma eremita and the worldwide distribution of the genus Cucujus. "Advances in methodology and databases" discusses new techniques in trapping and the development of databases. This volume gives a nice overview of the actual research on saproxylic beetles in Europe and I wish the next conference in 2010 a successful meeting; maybe some people from the UK or even overseas should be invited.

Yet, these forests are commonly threatened by invasion of exotic plant species, which may compromise the structure and ecological functions of native communities. Restoration of these forests will inevitably require removal and continued control of exotic species invasions. I focused my research on urban riparian forests within Raleigh and Cary, North Carolina, USA. My goals are to understand the impacts of exotic species invasion on these forest communities, identify factors that make these sites susceptible to invasion, and make appropriate restoration recommendations. To address these goals, three major studies structured my research. First, I tested two major paradigms of current exotic species ecology using observational data from 23 urban riparian buffers. The competition paradigm was borne out by negative relationships between exotic and native species richness (r = -0.66, p = 0.0009). I also detected shifts in species composition away from native woody species in sites that have been invaded by exotic species. As suggested by the resource availability paradigm, certain environmental conditions do seem to favor exotic species in this study system. While light availability was not significantly correlated to invasion of exotic species, several measures of soil fertility were negatively correlated to native species and positively correlated to exotic species. Therefore, efforts to reduce fertilization from adjacent and upstream landscapes should be part of any restoration plan. My second approach involved conducting an experimental removal study at the North Carolina Museum of Art. I compared the species composition and native species recovery in three treatments: control, initially removing all vegetation and allowing regeneration, and initial removal with repeated removal of new exotic recruits. Book excerpt: The exotic annual Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass) commonly occurs in dense, near-monocultures in the Great Basin, U.S.A. after diverse native plant communities have been mostly extirpated. Efforts to reestablish native species via direct seeding, typically with commercially produced, non-local seeds, are often unsuccessful. In addition to abiotic factors that often limit establishment, B. tectorum competition can impede native establishment in highly invaded communities, and commercially produced seeds may differ from local genotypes in their responses to these limitations. The phenomenon of complete B. tectorum stand failure, or 'die-off', can leave areas within near-monocultures devoid of growth for one or more years. Such areas may represent restoration opportunities if native seeds can establish within them. In October 2012, local and nonlocal (commercial) sources of Poa secunda (Sandberg bluegrass) and Elymus elymoides (bottlebrush squirreltail) were precision-planted in a recent die-off and adjacent near-monoculture (control) in northern Nevada under six treatments: litter removal, fungicide application, and no treatment; each with and without added simulated precipitation. I addressed the following questions: 1) Can native species be successfully restored in recent B. tectorum die-offs, and is establishment related to seedbed treatments and competition with B. tectorum ? 2) Do local and nonlocal materials differ in their performance as restoration material, and if so, are these differences consistent across seedbed treatments and in and out of a recent die-off? Seeded plots were monitored nine times throughout two growing seasons for emergence and seedling activity, and seedling growth was measured in May of the first season. Emergence of native seeds was significantly lower in die-off plots, but there were significantly more actively growing seedlings of both species in die-off plots than in adjacent control plots by the end of the first growing season, and seedlings in the die-off exhibited more leaves, increase late season vigor, and, for E. elymoides , increased height. Second year survival patterns also suggested greater establishment in die-off plots. Local P. secunda demonstrated improved performance over nonlocal material ('Mt. Home' germplasm) in both seasons, whereas nonlocal E. elymoides (`Toe Jam Creek' germplasm) demonstrated aspects of higher performance than the local collection in the first year but not the second. Litter removal had a positive influence on seedling activity for both species, but only affected the survival of P. secunda . Late autumn (early growing season) water addition affected emergence timing for both species and resulted in more E. elymoides seedlings, but this affect was equal across controls and die-offs. Although these results are representative of conditions at only one site, they suggest that B. tectorum die-off may support increased establishment of native species regardless of seedbed treatment, and may therefore represent valuable opportunities for restoration. Also, they indicate that local and nonlocal seeds differ in performance in important but idiosyncratic ways, which supports the belief that seed source should be considered as a factor affecting restoration success but contradicts the idea of generalizable local vs. nonlocal performance patterns.
