This book was released on 1966 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of accessory stimulation upon tachistoscopic perception of geometric figures was studied. In Experiment I, 32 subjects were tested on two successive days in a complete factorial design (Subjects x Treatments) in which degree of induced muscle tension (IMT) and level of task difficulty were manipulated. An IMT level of 1/2 of maximum resulted in significantly (p

Book Energetics and Human Information Processing

Download or read book Energetics and Human Information Processing written by G.M. Hockey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1986-09-30 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of this book is the role of energetical factors in the regulation of human information processing activity. This is a restatement of one of the classic problems of psychology - that of acc ounting for motivational or intensive aspects of behaviour, as opposed to structural or directional aspects. The term "energetics" was first used in the 1930's by Freeman, Duffy and others, following Cannon's energy mobilization view of emotion and motivation. The original concept had a limited life, probably because of its unnecessary focus on relativ ely peripheral processes, but it provided the foundations for the con cepts of "arousal" and "activation" which became the popular motivational constructs of the 1950's and 1960's. Now, these too are found wanting. The original assumptions of a unitary, non-specific process based on activation of the brain stem reticular formation have been shown to be misleading. Current work in neurobiology has demonstrated evidence of discrete neurotransmitter systems having quite specific information processing functions, and central roles in the regulation of behaviour. Even the venerable curvilinear relationship between motivation and per formance (the Yerkes-Dodson law) has been shown to be, at best, an unhelpful oversimplification. On a different front psychophysiologists have found complex patterns in the response of different bodily systems to external stressors and to task demands.

  • Author : John L. Andreassi

Download or read book Psychophysiology written by John L. Andreassi and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2010-05-26 with total page 781 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As new technology fuels the rapid growth of research in psychophysiology, it is essential that those new to the field receive a comprehensive introduction. Psychophysiology: Human Behavior and Physiological Response provides students with elementary information regarding the anatomy and physiology of various body systems, recording techniques, integrative reviews of literature, and concepts in the field. Highly accessible, this book fills a gap between edited handbooks that are often difficult for beginners, and journal articles that may also be a challenge to digest. In this new edition, John L. Andreassi incorporates: *a glossary of terms at the end of each chapter to help students learn definitions of novel terms introduced throughout the book; *a new chapter focusing on the proliferation of neuroimaging studies, including positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI); and *content changes in all chapters to cover new areas of research, as well as to update findings in traditional topics of interest. Upper level undergraduate and beginning graduate students in psychophysiology, biological psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and physiological psychology will benefit immensely from this important text, just as professionals new to psychophysiology will find this book exceptionally useful in their work.

Book excerpt: Experiments With Drugs: Studies in the Relation between Personality, Learning Theory and Drug Action provides a report of a series of experiments, conducted to test the effects of certain groups of drugs, depressants and stimulants, on human behavior. The book presents a number of experiments, together with the theoretical rationale underlying their development. The text begins with a chapter that sets the stage for the exposition of the various concepts and findings on drug effects on behavior. Subsequent chapters deal with particular subjects such as personality and drug effects; the effects of stimulant and depressant drugs on visual and auditory masking; excitation-inhibition and the theory of neurosis; interaction effects of drugs; and the influence of stimulant and depressant drugs on the central nervous system. Psychologists, biochemists, and researchers in the field of psychopharmacology will find the book useful and incisive.

Book The Neuropsychology of Attention

Download or read book The Neuropsychology of Attention written by Ronald A. Cohen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 992 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been 15 years since the original publication of Neuropsychology of Attention. At the time of its publication, attention was a construct that had long been of theoretical interest in the field of psychology and was receiving increased research by cognitive scientists. Yet, attention was typically viewed as a nuisance variable; a factor that needed to be accounted for when assessing brain function, but of limited importance in its own right. There is a need for a new edition of this book within Neuropsychology to present an updated and integrated review of what is know about attention, the disorders that affect it, and approaches to its clinical assessment and treatment. Such a book will provide perspectives for experimental neuropsychological study of attention and also provide clinicians with insights on how to approach this neuropsychological domain.

Book The Psychology of Anxiety

Download or read book The Psychology of Anxiety written by Eugene E. Levitt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1980, this title builds on the first edition which provided a comprehensive review and evaluation of theory and research on anxiety at the time. In the time between publications there had been many studies of anxiety phenomena and substantial progress in our conceptual understanding of the nature of anxiety and its measurement. The author incorporates those advances in empirical knowledge and new theoretical insights into this second edition. The most important and well-documented empirical findings in anxiety research are emphasized throughout the book, but attention is also called to unresolved theoretical issues and problem areas of the time where there was urgent need for additional research. Although much research has been done since, the authoritative analysis of anxiety phenomena that is presented in this book will still be of interest to medical, social and behavioral scientists and personality theorists, and to mental health workers of all disciplines who are engaged in clinical work with emotionally disturbed persons.
