The developmental process of belonging is interwoven with the social identity development of diverse college students. Although the construct of sense of belonging is complex and multilayered, a consistent theme across the chapters in this book is that the relationship between sense of belonging and intersectionality of identity cannot be ignored, and must be integrated into any approach to fostering belonging.Over the last 10 years, colleges and universities have started grappling with the notion that their approaches to maintaining and increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation rates were no longer working. As focus shifted to uncovering barriers to student success while concurrently recognizing student success as more than solely academic factors, the term “student sense of belonging” gained traction in both academic and co-curricular settings. The editors noticed the lack of a consistent definition, or an overarching theoretical approach, as well as a struggle to connect disparate research. Book excerpt: AbstractIn the last two decades the demographic composition of the United States has witnessed extraordinary changes in the numbers of ethnic minorities, and no where is this more evident than in our nation's public school system. Due to this proliferation of changes in the demographics of our country, serious issues and concerns have been raised with regard to the mental health and academic achievement of school-age children from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The major purpose of the study was to examine the implications of the relationship of psychological well-being variables (life satisfaction, self-esteem and ethnic identity), mental health depression, and Intergroup interactional competence and academic achievement of school- age adolescents. In group assemblies of varying sizes, seven measures were explained to students to fill out either in school or at home and return to be collected. These measures have been previously utilized and have been found to have adequate reliability and validity (Crumly & Hyers, 2004). The reliability of all the measures was also assessed in this study and was found to have moderate to high range. The study utilized a total sample of 119 African American adolescents from low social economic status ranging in grades from ten through twelve. The findings indicated significant intercorrelations among some selected psychological variables and objective and self-reported measures of achievement. Gender differences were noted in the predictability of achievement of reading. The perceived caring, inter-group anxiety, and psychological sense of membership measures were found to be the best predictors of academic achievement. Implications of the study as well as recommendations for future research in this area are discussed.

Book excerpt: The psychological well-being and racial/ethnic identity expression of bilingual multiple-race individuals mixed with Black/African American and another minority racial/ethnic category are largely underrepresented topics in current scholarly literature despite their growing population in the United States. In the current study, the sociohistorical and political processes of colonialism and coloniality were discussed to provide context for the critical examination of familial foreign language ability (FLA), self-esteem (SE), and Black/African American racial/ethnic identity (BRI) expression among multiple-race Black/African American adults (N = 204). Using structural equation modeling, results indicated that higher levels of FLA were related to higher levels of SE. Higher salience and dominance levels of BRI were also related to higher levels of SE among study participants. In addition, higher salience and dominance levels of BRI significantly mediated the relationship between FLA and SE. The importance of acknowledging potential FLA among multiple-race Black/African Americans are also discussed in the context of professional counseling and counselor education. Limitations of the current study and recommendations for future research were also provided.

Book excerpt: Since the late 1960s, the enrollment of African American students in higher education has steadily increased. Furthermore, the community college system and specifically the California community college system has seen the highest rise in the enrollment of African American students. Despite the rise in their numbers, African American male students who have relied on the California community college system as a conduit to a better life continue to have the lowest academic achievement outcomes and are the most likely to leave college. Although research shows that the persistence and academic achievement of college students is linked to the interactions they have with faculty and their peers, little is known about whether these relationships are also connected to the academic achievement of African American males attending California community colleges, nor is it understood how psychosocial factors influence the achievement. This dissertation built on a study conducted by Reid (2007) in which Tinto's institutional integration theory (e.g., Tinto, 1993) was extended by assertion that African American males who are academically successful (and not just persistent) are also well integrated in the academic and social milieu of their college campuses. Reid's study also hypothesized that their level of institutional integration which influenced their academic achievement was linked to their racial identity attitudes and self-efficacy beliefs. The study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach in which twelve African American male students, who were recruited from one Southern California community college, were interviewed to learn about their educational experiences and perceptions. The goal of the study was to provide a voice to this student subgroup which continues to under-perform academically. The findings of the study highlight the importance of race, faculty connections and intrinsic motivation factors in reaching academic goals. The study provides recommendations, based on the findings, for educators, administrators and other community college stakeholders to better assist African American males attending community colleges in California to attain their educational goals.
