Book excerpt: Relational aggression is a devastating problem that has long-lasting consequences for children, especially girls. Although some studies have found that girls who disclose more to their friends experience higher levels of relational aggression, other studies have found that those who experience aggression disclose less than those who do not experience aggression. It is possible that this difference is related to the type of friendships being assessed and who is describing the friendship (i.e., self-report versus peer report). The purpose of this study was to expand on previous research regarding self-disclosure and relational aggression by addressing these differences. First, this study addressed children's experiences in three relationship contexts: dyadic friendships, friendship networks, and peer groups. This study also included both self- and peer-reports. It was hypothesized that the association between relational aggression and self-disclosure would depend on the specific relationship context being assessed. The study included 62 girls from a community-based social organization and 37 girls from a high school setting. Each participant completed a peer nomination form and self-report measures regarding her friendships with other girls. Results showed that perpetration of relational aggression was positively associated with being victimized by relational aggression, especially within dyadic relationships and friendship networks. Disclosing personal information was positively associated with being a confidant to other girls, especially within friendship networks. Victimization and disclosing were positively correlated among the peer group in the school sample. Differences between the community sample and school sample were primarily seen within the peer group. Implications for interventions to reduce relational aggression are discussed.

Evolutionary theories, for instance, suggest that the peer group within which an aggressor is embedded is of central importance to the use of aggression. However, there is disagreement in the field with regard to understanding precisely how aggression and peer relationships should relate. As such, in a series of three empirical studies, my dissertation takes a relational approach and addresses some of the inconsistencies present in the extant literature. In Study 1, I examined how qualities of youth's close friendships contributed to the use of aggression, both concurrently and over time. I found that youth with large friendship networks were more aggressive, whereas those with highly interconnected friendship network decreased in aggression over time. Using a dyadic mediation model, the second study considered the precursors to aggressors' friendships with peers. Specifically, I explored aggressive youth's interactions with unfamiliar peers and assessed how the interactions that unfold affected the quality of the relationship. I found that dyads who were highly discrepant in their tendencies toward aggression failed to collaborate well with one another, and this led to less positive perceptions of one another. Whereas the first two studies concerned aggressors' relationships with their friends (Study 1) and acquaintances (Study 2), Study 3 focused on a different type of relationship the relationship between an aggressor and his or her victim(s). In the third study, I explored how power dynamics operate within an aggressor-victim dyad and assessed whether differences in the balance of power between the aggressor and victim affected the strength of their relationship. I found that more aggressor-victim dyads were characterized by a relative balance than imbalance in power, and that power balanced dyads had stronger and more sustained aggressor-victim relationships. By taking a relational approach to the study of aggression, this dissertation has advanced extant work in the field. That is, these findings move away from the simplification and aggregation of relational constructs (e.g., relationships, friendships), and instead consider the nuances of specific types of relationships or interactions with specific peers, allowing for a better understanding of the relational nature of aggression.

Book excerpt: Although a substantial amount of scholarly research has repeatedly shown the negative effects of bullying on children and adolescents (Chapell et al., 2006; Crick & Grotpeter, 1995; Crick et al., 1999), less is known about the effects of peer victimization on young adults. This study investigated the relationship between relational aggression (RA; Gros et al., 2010) and student engagement (SE; Appleton, Christenson, Kim, & Reschly, 2006) for males and females in a college sample. A correlational design utilized self-report surveys (Appleton et al., 2006; Morales & Crick, 1998) of RA and SE obtained from 75 college students. Pearson correlations (Stevens, 2009) were -0.27126 for Group 1, which included participants endorsing a romantic relationship, suggesting a weak, negative correlation, and -0.14679 for Group 2, which included participants not endorsing a romantic relationship, suggesting no relationship, or a negligible relationship. Thus, neither finding was significant. Implications, limitations, and directions for further research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The current study investigates the correlates of partner-directed relational aggression in married couples. In particular, this study looks at the connection between romantic relational aggression and the personal outcome of depression. Both the experience of victimization and perpetration of romantic relational aggression are considered. Victimization may be linked to depression through the concept of the “looking glass self” and reflected appraisals. Aggression, in contrast, may be linked to depression through dissatisfaction with one’s own aggressive tendencies in the relationship and a lack of “relational self-esteem”. Couples who completed the RELATE assessment were asked to report on their partner’s engagement in relationally aggressive strategies (both the love withdrawal and social sabotage subtypes) toward them. These scores were then used to predict self-reports of depression of both spouses. Bivariate correlations showed, with only one exception, that all aggression strategies were modestly yet significantly correlated with depression for aggressors and victims. In the SEM structural model, controlling for covariates, female love withdrawal was found to significantly predict male depression and male love withdrawal marginally predicted male depression. In this respect, victimization showed a stronger link to depression than aggression. There was no difference between social sabotage and love withdrawal in their predictive value. Women were found to report more aggression (of both subtypes) and depression. Clinical implications are discussed.

The present study explored the effect of relational aggression experienced during adolescence on adult female friendships, including female relational capacity. The effects of relational aggression on women's friendships are long lasting, and, therefore, it is important to learn as much as possible about the ways women develop friendships with one another and how they bridge the gap between girlhood and womanhood. This qualitative study provides a contextual understanding of the lasting effects of relational aggression on women's friendships with other women. Specifically, the research investigated the lived experiences of ten women who experienced relational aggression in adolescence and its current influence on their friendships with women using a phenomenological approach. The researcher employed individual in-depth interviews that were transcribed and analyzed for thematic content. Within the participant's interviews, the researcher identified common themes among experiences through the qualitative data analysis included how the participants defined relational aggression, how the participants develop their friendship circle, the messages given to them about how to handle conflicts, how they express their anger, and the important role female friendships have had on their development. The results of this study may benefit women who experienced relational aggression in adolescence as well as assist mental health care providers to understand better the role that relational images formed in adolescence has on the future friendships of adult women with one another.

A sample of 217 (150 women) emerging adults (M age = 18.97 years; SD = 1.29) participated in a study on the functions of relational aggression in peer and romantic relationships. We examined the associations between socio-cognitive (normative beliefs about relational aggression, exclusivity, and rumination) and affective (emotion dysregulation and callous-unemotional traits) factors in general forms of peer and romantic relational aggression and proactive and reactive functions of peer and romantic relational aggression. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted on several items assessing reactive and proactive romantic relational aggression. Hierarchal multiple regression was used to examine unique associations between social-cognitive and affective factors and relational aggression sub types. Findings suggest that exclusivity and normative beliefs about aggression uniquely contributed engagement in relation aggression across relationship contexts. Findings of this study extend the literature on relational aggression in emerging adulthood.
