Book Relational Aggression and the Impact it Has on Female Adolescents

Download or read book Relational Aggression and the Impact it Has on Female Adolescents written by Rebecca C. Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research has been dedicated to understanding relational aggression and how it impacts females. In this paper the researcher created a survey. The survey focused on the aggressor, the victim, the impact of relational aggression toward friendships, school attendance and the most commonly used relational aggressive behaviors. The survey was administered to forty female students in a suburban High School. Overall, the results of this study suggested that relational aggression had no impact on the selected students friendships or school attendance. However, the students did report that they did not think their school had done everything they can to handle issues related to relational aggression. Results pointed to the need of school staff to address relational aggressive behaviors when students are in their freshman and sophomore year of high school. The students surveyed provided feedback for their teachers, school counselors and administrators on how they would like them to address relational aggression behaviors in their school. Training for the entire staff on relational aggression was also recommended.

Book The Development of Relational Aggression

Download or read book The Development of Relational Aggression written by Sarah M. Coyne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research over the last few decades has revealed that individuals use a variety of mechanisms to hurt one another, many of which are not physical in nature. In this volume, editors Sarah M. Coyne and Jamie M. Ostrov turn their focus on relational aggression, behavior that is intended to cause harm to another individual's relationships or social standing in the group (e.g., gossiping, social exclusion, and spreading malicious rumors). Unlike physical aggression, the scars of relational aggression are more difficult to detect. However, victims (and their aggressors) may experience strong and long-lasting consequences, including reduced self-esteem, loneliness, depression, anxiety, and more. Over the past 25 years, there has been a growing body of literature on relational aggression and other non-physical forms of aggression that have focused predominantly on gender differences, development, and risk and protective factors. In this volume, the focus turns to the development of relational aggression during childhood, adolescence, and emerging adulthood. Here, Coyne, Ostrov, and their contributing authors examine a number of risk factors and socializing agents or models (e.g., parenting, peers, media, the classroom) that lead to the development of relational aggression over time. An understanding of how these behaviors develop will inform readers of important intervention strategies to curb the use of relational aggression in schools, peer groups, and in family relationships. The Development of Relational Aggression provides scholars, researchers, practitioners, students, and parents with an extensive resource that will help move the field forward in our understanding of the development of relational aggression for the future.

Book The Impact of Gender Family and Mental Health Issues on Displays of Relational Aggression in a Sample of Court involved Youth

Download or read book The Impact of Gender Family and Mental Health Issues on Displays of Relational Aggression in a Sample of Court involved Youth written by Lindsay S. Sereika and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study focuses on a form of problematic behavior known as relational aggression. Relational aggression is defined as the manipulation of an interpersonal relationship, through both direct and indirect non-physical means, in order to harm another person. Previous studies have examined potential gender differences regarding displays of this type of aggression in samples of children and adolescents, with results that have been inconclusive. The present study extends this literature by considering two additional factors, family issues and mental health concerns, in order to more comprehensively understand the prediction of relational aggression in males and females. The study examined a sample of 272 court-involved youth and their parents from two Ohio counties who were interviewed by juvenile justice professionals using the Global Risk Assessment Device (GRAD). Three domains of the GRAD were used in the present study: the mental health domain, the family/parenting domain, and 5 items from the peer relationships domain that covered relational aggression issues. T-test analyses generated initial evidence of gender differences in adolescent relational aggression levels, such that females were reported to display higher levels of relational aggression than males. In addition, mental health issues were significantly and positively related to relational aggression displays in both the male and the female samples as reported by both adolescents and parents. Further, family/parenting concerns were significantly related to mental health issues that, in turn, were related to relational aggression displays in both males and females. Hence, among other things, the findings of the present study suggest that youth with relational aggression tendencies are better identified not by their gender but rather through a more comprehensive understanding of the issues that they are facing in risk domains associated with mental health and the family.

Book The Psychological Impact of Relational Aggression on Adolescent Females

Download or read book The Psychological Impact of Relational Aggression on Adolescent Females written by Marcy M. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relational aggressive behaviors are the strategies used to socially sabotage relationships, social status and self- esteem of others. This type of bullying is on the rise. In the past, this type of aggressive behavior was widely associated with physical aggression. Now that more females are engaging in bullying, relational aggression is the preferred form of bullying for many adolescent girls. Spreading gossip, starting rumors, and excluding peers is an effective way to damage and manipulate others while remaining behind the scenes. Victims of this type of bullying may have long-term ramifications which could also lead to psychological damage. In addition to emotional distress, many girls experience physical symptoms including headaches, stomach issues, fatigue and sadness. The patterns of relational aggression found in cyber relationships are in the form of intimidation, harassment, and threats. These are commonly occurring online and through cell phone texting. School counselors, parents, and teachers need to know the kinds of behavior girls are using to be covertly aggressive toward others.

Book No More Mean Girls

Download or read book No More Mean Girls written by Katie Hurley and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Queen Bees and Wannabes for the elementary and middle school set, child and adolescent psychotherapist Katie Hurley shows parents of young girls how to nip mean girl behavior in the bud. Once upon a time, mean girls primarily existed in high school, while elementary school-aged girls spent hours at play and enjoyed friendships without much drama. But in this fast-paced world in which young girls are exposed to negative behaviors on TV and social media from the moment they enter school, they are also becoming caught up in social hierarchies much earlier. No More Mean Girls is a guide for parents to help their young daughters navigate tricky territories such as friendship building, creating an authentic self, standing up for themselves and others, and expressing themselves in a healthy way. The need to be liked by others certainly isn't new, but this generation of girls is growing up in an age when the "like" button shows the world just how well-liked they are. When girls acknowledge that they possess positive traits that make them interesting, strong, and likeable, however, the focus shifts and their self-confidence soars; "likes" lose their importance. This book offers actionable steps to help parents empower young girls to be kind, confident leaders who work together and build each other up.

Book Glossed Lips and Glossed Over

Download or read book Glossed Lips and Glossed Over written by Tamara Jean Salas-Tull and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relational aggression is an indirect type of aggression used to damage relationships with others. Adolescent girls frequently encounter this issue, and the ubiquity of technology has expanded the ways in which girls can attack one another, i.e. cyber-bullying. The causes of relational aggression are unknown and could involve a combination of factors, including victim and/or bully psycho-social adjustment, social expectations, or the implicit structure of female friendships in adolescence. The effects range from social anxiety to impacted school performance to depression and suicidality. Groups of friends act much like a family for adolescents in terms of support and intimacy. Using Murray Bowen's family systems theory as a template, an intervention is proposed where girls are taught techniques that will strengthen relationships with others and themselves.

Book Relational Aggression in Adolescent Girls

Download or read book Relational Aggression in Adolescent Girls written by Rebecca E. Lamont and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Relational aggression" might be a new phrase in the English vernacular, but the idea of adolescent girls being "catty" towards one another is certainly nothing new. The research-based focus has been on male bullying for most of the past century, but that focus is beginning to shift as more cases of female bullying and its consequences have come to the surface. These same researchers have differing ideas as to why adolescent girls seemingly have the hardest time with relational aggression, but one thing is clear: the long-term effects of having been bullied during the middle and high school years are significant. This thesis will attempt to look at some of the history, research and outcomes of relational aggression and give educators tools to work with this growing problem in our schools."--leaf 4.

Book The Lasting Effects of Relational Aggression on Women s Friendships with Other Women Including Their Relational Capacity for Others and Themselves

Download or read book The Lasting Effects of Relational Aggression on Women s Friendships with Other Women Including Their Relational Capacity for Others and Themselves written by Claudia D. Legarreta and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinct from physical aggression where acts are meant to harm another's physical well-being, relational aggression is a covert mean of harming others through damage of social relationships. The present study explored the effect of relational aggression experienced during adolescence on adult female friendships, including female relational capacity. The effects of relational aggression on women's friendships are long lasting, and, therefore, it is important to learn as much as possible about the ways women develop friendships with one another and how they bridge the gap between girlhood and womanhood. This qualitative study provides a contextual understanding of the lasting effects of relational aggression on women's friendships with other women. Specifically, the research investigated the lived experiences of ten women who experienced relational aggression in adolescence and its current influence on their friendships with women using a phenomenological approach. The researcher employed individual in-depth interviews that were transcribed and analyzed for thematic content. Within the participant's interviews, the researcher identified common themes among experiences through the qualitative data analysis included how the participants defined relational aggression, how the participants develop their friendship circle, the messages given to them about how to handle conflicts, how they express their anger, and the important role female friendships have had on their development. The results of this study may benefit women who experienced relational aggression in adolescence as well as assist mental health care providers to understand better the role that relational images formed in adolescence has on the future friendships of adult women with one another.

Book Romantic Relational Aggression in Parents and Adolescent Child Outcomes

Download or read book Romantic Relational Aggression in Parents and Adolescent Child Outcomes written by Jennifer Nicole Hawkley and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine marital romantic relational aggression in parents and its impact on adolescent relational aggression, adolescent romantic relational aggression, internalizing, and school engagement with self-regulation as a potential mediator. Gender differences were also examined. Adolescents were from 328 two-parent families in a large north-western city in the United States and were between 12 and 17 years of age (M=14.24, SD=1.00, 51% female) at time 4. All independent variables except adolescent self-regulation were measured at wave 4, and all adolescent variables were measured at wave 5. Results indicate that higher levels of romantic relational aggression from mother to father was directly related to higher relational aggression in girls and lower romantic relational aggression in boys one year later. Father romantic relational aggression was directly and negatively related to romantic relational aggression in girls one year later. Mother romantic relational aggression was indirectly related to all outcomes in females only, in the predicted directions, through adolescent self-regulation. Father romantic relational aggression was indirectly related, in the predicted directions, to relational aggression, internalizing, and school engagement in boys only. Implications for research and clinical practice are discussed.

Book A Review of Literature on Relational Aggression and Social Exclusion in Adolescent Girls

Download or read book A Review of Literature on Relational Aggression and Social Exclusion in Adolescent Girls written by Kaisa L. Lee and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reviewed the pertinent literature on relational aggression among adolescent girls as well as one its strong correlation with social exclusion. The purpose of this study was to also examine the various forms and characteristics of relational aggression such as indirect and social aggression that many researchers frequently use interchangeably. The research conducted on relational aggression is relatively new, though it has revealed evidence that suggests it is highly prevalent in adolescent girls. Social exclusion was found by research to be one of the main characteristics of relational aggression because a large fear of many girls is to be excluded and feel lonely. This study also looked at the affects of the aggressor and victim of relational aggression. The research has demonstrated evidence that there can be serious social-psychological adjustment issues, depression, severe loneliness, and low self-esteem that affect both the victim and the aggressor. The detrimental effect relational aggression has on girls only strengthens reasons why this behavior should be researched more in depth including effective prevention and intervention strategies.
