Teachers evaluate it in the form of grades to describe how well a student has done. Grading system came into existence in the late Victorian period and was initially criticized due to high subjectivity. Different teachers valued different aspects of learning more than others, although some standardization was attempted in order to make the system fairer the problem still continued. The performance, especially of students in studies, is most likely determined by family environment, emotional maturity, and educational encouragement which all initially come from the family environment. Here, it is important to mention that the phenomenon of educational encouragement has not been studied especially in the Indian context which to the present investigator seems to be very important for students' motivation and thereby attaining high performance. This study (1) estimates the net effect of changing family characteristics and demographics on aptitude scores and (2) compares the expected changes to actual changes to estimate the effects of factors unrelated to family. The conclusions undercut the conventional wisdom about failing schools, deteriorating families, and ineffective public investments and policies. The study estimates that changing family characteristics would boost scores by about 7 percentile points. These gains come primarily from higher parental education and smaller family size, which translates into more resources per child. For non-Hispanic white students, the actual gains in scores were approximately the same as expected from family changes. However, black and Hispanic students made far larger gains than non-Hispanic white students, and only about one-third of the gains could be explained by changing family characteristics. These large unexplained gains for minority students may be evidence that additional public investment in schools and social programs and equal educational opportunity policies have had marked benefits. The authors caution that the results should not be interpreted to mean that conditions have improved for every student, family or school, only that averaging across all 14-18-year-old students over the last 20 years indicates a positive change.

Book excerpt: Previous research has consistently documented a negative association between family-related stressful life events and academic achievement among adolescents. However, the existing research on this topic does not adequately address how this relation may be influenced by the ecological context in which it occurs. Using a large, diverse sample (N = 15,080) from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88), the current study addresses this gap by utilizing Bronfenbrenner's (1979) ecological systems framework to contextualize the relations between family stress and academic achievement in terms of ecological niches defined by adolescents' gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Furthermore, the study examines potential buffers (i.e., self-esteem, locus of control, students' expectations, parents' expectations, and parental involvement) of the family stress-achievement relation. Analyses included an examination of means and correlations across ecological niches, as well as a series of path models using multiple group analysis to test for interaction effects across the ecological niches. The results revealed interesting variations in the means, correlations, and interactions across ecological niches. For example, despite having the lowest levels of family-related stressful life events, the academic achievement of Asian American adolescents, particularly Asian American males from high SES backgrounds, was most vulnerable to the effects of stressful family events. Results also indicated that self-esteem, locus of control, and parental involvement serve as particularly robust buffers to the effects of family stress on academic achievement among Asian American males from low SES backgrounds. The findings also suggest that parents' and adolescents' high expectations were significantly less effective in contexts marked by high family stress, and as a result, were associated with lower standardized test scores in several ecological niches. The findings are discussed in relation to the "model minority" myth--the expectation that all Asian American students are high-achieving. Together, the findings highlight the importance of considering the ecological context when examining developmental processes and outcomes, and more broadly, deepen our understanding of the complex social ecology of adolescent development.
