This book is a theoretical and empirical exploration of the link between the type of buyer-supplier relations and corporate performance. Dr Sako examines how British and Japanese companies in the electronics industry manage their relationships with buyers and suppliers, the empirical study comprising a three-way comparison of a Japanese customer company, a British customer company, and a Japanese company in Britain, and an analysis of 36 supplier companies in Britain and Japan. Variations of the companies' business practices are assessed in terms of technology, the nature of market competition, the national legal framework, financial structures, employment systems, and the mode of entrepreneurship. The author identifies two distinct approaches in the two countries - the arm's-length contractual relation (ACR) in Britain, and the obligational contractual relation (OCR) in Japan - and argues that the trust and interdependence present in the latter can be a powerful springboard from which to achieve corporate success.

Book excerpt: Psychologists, sociologists, philosophers, historians - and even scientists themselves - have often tried to decipher the basis for creativity in science. Some have attributed creativity to a special logic, the so-called scientific method, whereas others have pointed to the inspirations of genius or to the inevitable workings of the zeitgeist. Finally, some have viewed scientific breakthroughs as the product of chance, as witnessed in the numerous episodes of serendipity. Too often these four alternative interpretations are seen as mutually exclusive. Yet the central thesis of this book is that the chance, logic, genius, and zeitgeist perspectives can be integrated into a single coherent theory of creativity in science. But for this integration to succeed, change must be elevated to the status of primary cause. Logic, genius and the zeitgeist still have significant roles to play but mainly operate insofar as they enhance, or constrain the operation of a chance combinatorial process.

A quantitative methodology using a cross-sectional survey method was used to investigate the relationship between variables.

Effectively developing, operating, governing and maintaining relationships build with supply partners remains a huge challenge for any organization involved in the supply chains. This dissertation works at the intersection of previously largely disconnected streams of literature and attempts to contribute by integrating the research perspectives of relationship marketing (RM) and supply chain management (SCM) on an overlapping unit of investigation, which is considered supply chain relationship quality (SCRQ). Through a review and empirical analysis of the SCRQ issues, this dissertation involves a discovery of the connection of SCRQ and SCM, and thus the overachieving question “how are SCRQ and SCM related to each other” was answered. This dissertation includes four individual research studies. They are embedded into an overall framing. They add to the respective RM and SCM literature by (1) reviewing the scope of the RQ topics in a SC context and developing the research framework of SCRQ, (2) analyzing the overlap of literature on SCRQ and supply chain integration (SCI) and examining the linkages of dimensions and performance of SCI reflected in the SCRQ studies, (3) providing empirical insights into effective management of SCRQ issues in the Chinese business context from a multiple channel and multiple levels perspective.
