Book Piloted Ignition Times for Cellulosic Solids Exposed to Time Dependent Heat Fluxes

Download or read book Piloted Ignition Times for Cellulosic Solids Exposed to Time Dependent Heat Fluxes written by C. Stuart Kelley and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time to piloted ignition of a cellulosic solid, when exposed to a constant incident heat flux, has been extensively studied by other researchers. Results have been interpreted by relating the ignition time to the heat flux by a transcendental equation involving the error function. For practical situations, the equation simplifies to an inverse power dependence of the ignition time on the heat flux. The present paper extends the scope of this inverse power relation by adapting it to include the effects of a varying heat flux. It then is used to predict ignition times of a wood target exposed to flames from pools of gelled hydrocarbons. Results indicate that the ignition time is inversely proportional to the hydrocarbon mass and is relatively independent of height (above the flame agent) below a height equal to the pool radius and then increases rapidly with height. Thermocouple measurements of flames from burning gelled hydrocarbons are reported. (Author).

Book Ignition of Polymers

Download or read book Ignition of Polymers written by Peter Rantuch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-22 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the initiation of combustion processes of polymeric materials. It presents physicochemical processes associated with heating as well as numerical methods for initiation parameter calculation. In addition, the book describes thermal degradation of polymers and the effect of an incident heat flux on initiation time. It then highlights the most commonly used devices for measuring the time to ignition using external heat sources. The target group of this book are scientists and researchers dealing with materials combustion and also graduates and practitioners focused on fire protection.

Book Effect of Water on Piloted Ignition of Cellulosic Materials

Download or read book Effect of Water on Piloted Ignition of Cellulosic Materials written by M. Abu-Zaid and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a simple theoretical model of the piloted ignition process. The two-dimensional coupled solid and gas phase problem is simplified by assuming that the mass evolution rate from the combustible solid is a known function of time and by employing a plane rather than a point ignition source. These assumptions reduce the model problem to a transient one-dimensional analysis of the gas-phase phenomena. The model equations are solved numerically using a fast scheme especially suited to combustion problems. The pilot flame is modeled as a thin slab of gas that is periodically heated to the adiabatic flame temperature of the stoichiometric mixture. The effects of: (i) the location of the ignition source, (ii) the fuel mass evolution rate from the surface, and (iii) the surface temperature of the solid are investigated. This model adequately explains the pre-ignition flashes that are often observed experimentally. It also provides a rational criterion for positioning of the pilot flame. It is found that the minimum fuel flow rate, by itself is insufficient for predicting the onset of piloted ignition and that heat losses to the surface play an important role. Also, the conditions at extinction of a steady diffusion flame are found to be identical to those at piloted ignition.

This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 914 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date and comprehensive overview summarizing recent achievements, the state of the art, and trends in research into nanocellulose and cellulose nanocomposites. Following an introduction, this ready references discusses the characterization as well surface modification of cellulose nanocomposites before going into details of the manufacturing and the self-assembly of such compounds. After a description of various alternatives, including thermoplastic, thermosetting, rubber, and fully green cellulose nanocomposites, the book continues with their mechanic and thermal properties, as well as crystallization and rheology behavior. A summary of spectroscopic and water sorption properties precedes a look at environmental health and safety of these nanocomposites. With its coverage of a wide variety of materials, important characterization tools and resulting applications, this is an essential reference for beginners as well as experienced researchers.
