Book Illicit Antiquities

Download or read book Illicit Antiquities written by Neil Brodie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-27 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exploitation of archaeological sites for commercial gain is a serious problem worldwide. In peace and during wartime archaeological sites and cultural institutions, both on land and underwater, are attacked and their contents robbed for sale on an international 'antiquities' market. Objects are excavated without record, smuggled across borders and sold for exorbitant prices in the salesrooms of Europe and North America. In some countries this looting has now reached such a scale as to threaten the very survival of their archaeological and cultural heritage. This volume highlights the deleterious effects of the trade on cultural heritage, but in particular it focuses upon questions of legal and local responses: How can people become involved in the preservation of their past and what, in economic terms, are the costs and benefits? Are international conventions or export restrictions effective in diminishing the volume of the trade and the scale of its associated destruction?

Book Archaeology Cultural Property and the Military

Download or read book Archaeology Cultural Property and the Military written by Laurie Watson Rush and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Lawrence of Arabia to the Monuments Men to the contributors within this volume, academic scholars have found themselves engaged in conflict areas, in topics involving conflict, and in unlikely partnerships with military professionals. Motives and methods have varied dramatically over the years, but the over-riding theme of this volume is stewardship. In each case, an author has encountered a situation where their expertise has offered the potential to help save archaeological properties, historical structures, and sacred places - or has documented the process. Drawing on major contributions from seven armed forces, amongst others, this book aims to set out the obligations to protect cultural heritage under international Conventions; provide a series of case studies of current military practice; and outline the current efforts to enhance this. Overall, it offers examples, anecdotes, and lessons learned that can be used for consideration in planning future efforts for global archaeological stewardship.--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Book Presenting Archaeology in Court

Download or read book Presenting Archaeology in Court written by Sherry Hutt and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2006 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The passage of the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) in 1979 was a watershed moment in the movement to protect cultural objects against looting. This brief volume provides practical help to those who wish to use the provisions of ARPA_archaeologists, government land managers, preservation groups, and attorneys_to maximize its protective net. The distinguished group of authors, all veterans of ARPA enforcement efforts, first provides a comprehensive history of passage of the law and highlights some key cases that shaped its impact. Other chapters offer concrete instructions on establishing archaeological valuation and assessing damage to cultural sites. A final section provides a menu of legal strategies now available for use to strengthen and extend the provisions of the law. For cultural resource professionals working under ARPA's provisions, this book will be an invaluable, guide for daily practice.
